1 . I had been ready for the inevitable failures of graduate school-experiments, proposals, even classes. But I was caught off-guard when midway through my first year I began to face a different type of challenge. I felt tired every morning. My appetite decreased. I started to notice an increase in trips to the bathroom. Finally came the blood each time I went, which continued for more than a week and spurred(刺激)me to go to the emergency department. My doctors told me I needed to focus completely on my health for the next 6 months. I hoped I could keep up with my studies and take care of my health by switching projects and attending classes virtually. However, my graduate program wasn’t keen on the idea and my doctors weren’t either. All said I had two options: a medical leave of absence or withdrawing from my program.

I had never taken a break before. I am the daughter of immigrants, and my parents believed breaks weren’t an option for our family. I feared adding to the dropout statistic for students of color. I feared a leave of absence would be seen as a sign of weakness. But I wasn’t ready to give up on graduate school, so the leave of absence seemed like the only option.

I was no longer a researcher or a student; I was a patient. When classmates swapped messages about assignments, experiments, and exams I felt I had nothing to add, so I stopped responding, and they stopped including me. The isolation fueled my fears, and then came the depression.

Still, I knew this leave of absence was essential. Over the past year, I connected with others who also took time away during graduate school. In hearing their stories, I learned that a leave of absence is perfectly OK, no matter the reason. There is bravery in taking the time to focus on yourself. I learned to take comfort in knowing that everyone’s Ph. D. journey is unique, and mine was far from over.

1. What unexpected challenge did the author face?
A.Peer pressure.
B.Academic failures.
C.Physical problems.
D.An identity crisis.
2. What had the author intended to do in response to the doctor’s advice?
A.Take online courses.
B.Quit her program.
C.Ask for a medical leave.
D.Focus entirely on her health.
3. What can best describe the author’s changing feelings about her leave of absence?
A.Hopeful-desperate-proud.
B.Sorrowful-relieved-lonely.
C.Anxious-depressed-comfortable.
D.Ashamed-frightened-concerned.
4. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.A Miracle of Bravery
B.A Break for My Health
C.My Rough Road to Recovery
D.My Incredible Ph. D. Journey

2 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

As the bell was about to ring, our teacher announced a special assignment for next Monday: to share our gratitude for someone instead of giving a daily report. Hearing this, anxiety crawled over my body as the last thing I would do was speaking in front of the entire class! I couldn’t help complaining to my best friend Jenny.

“You are the chief violinist in our school orchestra, aren’t you?” she said. “So what’s the point of being afraid of speaking to a few our own classmates since you can handle acting in front of a large audience?”

Her point made sense, but being in a performance meant being part of a team. I shook my head. Besides, there were so many people I was grateful to, and choosing just one seemed difficult. Even if I could pick someone, I wouldn’t know how to say thank you. And even if I figured out what to say, I was sure I’d stumble(结巴地说) on my words when speaking aloud! Standing there, with everyone’s eyes on me, I would feel the spot light was wholly on me, and there would be no place for me to hide! “Oh no!” I covered my face with my hands and said, “I can’t do it, just can’t!” Real friends, the ones who know you well, don’t just do exactly what you ask. Jenny, always supportive and helpful, wrote something on a piece of paper and gently removed my hands from my face. She had drawn a cute cat with the word “CALM” written below it.

“Nice meeting you; I am the ‘everything will be fine’ cat,” Jenny laughed and sounded exactly like a cat. Pretending to listen to the cat, she asked, “Well, kitty, you think my friend should come to my house tomorrow, so we can prepare our speeches together I laughed out loud and relaxed a lot. I have to say Jenny was there for me, always!”

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍了如何让假期过得更美好的一些建议。

3 . How to Make Your Holiday Wonderful

Don’t want to spend a holiday alone feeling blue?     1

1. Don’t Force Cheer

At family gatherings, when your relatives make some untruthful compliments (赞美), you will probably try to force a smile.     2     But a 2011 study by researchers at Michigan State University might make you think twice. They followed dozens of bus drivers for two weeks, looking to see when they force a happy face at their passengers. The results showed that on days when the drivers tried to pretend to have a good mood, their actual moods got worse.

2. Don’t Suppress (压制) Sadness

The results of the bus-driver study can be explained by researchers from Stanford University, who found that negative feelings like sadness or anger only worsen when we try to suppress them.     3     Expressing our sadness can help us get comfort and compassion from those who care about us. By contrast, suppressing our emotions can actually harm our relationships.

3. Respond Mindfully

4     When you respond mindfully to an emotional trigger (诱因), you pause rather than reacting. Instead of blaming yourself, you simply notice what you’re feeling without judging that response as right or wrong. Studies suggest that a mindful response to a negative event reduces the amount of negative emotions we experience.     5

Inevitably, the holidays will bring a mix of highs and lows. Perhaps the most important lesson to keep in mind is that this variety of emotions might be the best thing possible for your overall well-being.

A.A smile might seem like the most mature response.
B.And mindfulness is a skill you can develop over time.
C.So trying to hide their feelings seems to lead to an opposite result.
D.Psychological research suggests some effective ways to help beat the holiday blues.
E.Instead, if properly understood, they can help contribute to a healthy and happy life.
F.Recently, scientists have been paying special attention to the benefits of mindfulness.
G.That’s because we feel worse when we try to control and hide our negative inner feelings.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。本文主要介绍了愤怒的作用以及处理愤怒的正确方法。

4 . People tend to treat anger as something terrible and unacceptable. Many parents around the world teach their children to suppress (抑制) or ignore their anger. Intentionally or not, they show their children that feeling angry is wrong, and it is better to always look calm and balanced. However, that is not right. Anger plays an extremely important role in a person’s emotional health.

Anger can be effectively used to establish and defend your individual principle, personal space, sense of justice, beliefs, and so on. When another person somehow annoys you, one of the first emotions you normally experience is anger, along with the urge to fix an unpleasant situation or do something else to defend yourself. Generally, anger explains your readiness to face threat and gives you strength to do so. Therefore, when used with care, it is your best weapon (武器) for emergencies.

Anger can serve to cover some other emotions of yours if they are less appropriate. Sometimes, expressing fear is unacceptable, especially for men. For instance, masculinity (男子气概) and bravery are highly valued among men in some traditional cultures. So, covering fear with anger, acting aggressively remains a more appropriate choice for men. And this is an effective strategy, not just in terms of saving one’s reputation within a certain social group, but dealing with difficulties and overcoming barriers.

Anger is an extremely powerful emotion and it is not recommended to suppress or ignore it if it is not dangerous. A person who has been covering and hiding his or her anger cannot get rid of it, and the anger will still build up inside, finally resulting in violence as a response to a situation that does not require it. What you can do is express it in socially acceptable ways in most circumstances.

Therefore, anger itself is not a bad thing. And it is important to learn how to manage anger, express it in a nonviolent way, and redirect it in constructive directions. So, do not ignore your anger. You should face it, accept it, and learn how to deal with it.

1. What can we know from paragraph 1?
A.Children often ignore their anger.
B.People usually misunderstand anger.
C.Anger indicates a person’s bad temper.
D.Parents always treat their children seriously.
2. Why can anger be your best weapon for emergencies?
A.It makes you look like a strong person.
B.It gives you strength to face difficulties.
C.It helps you get rid of outside interruption.
D.It is useful for fixing an unpleasant situation.
3. What is the author’s advice about dealing with anger?
A.Present anger in a peaceful manner.
B.Cover anger if it is not appropriate.
C.Face and accept the anger of others bravely.
D.Do not fight against anger under any situation.
4. What is the author’s attitude towards anger?
A.Indifferent.B.Critical.
C.Supportive.D.Objective.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述的是不好的情绪是每个人都不希望拥有的,而学会接受自己的情绪才是最好的解决方法。

5 . Often when we have an uncomfortable feeling, such as sadness, fear or shame, our first reaction is to reject that feeling. We may tell ourselves that it is a bad feeling we don’t want to have.     1     For example, some people try to push it away or use alcohol to feel better.

Certainly no one wants to feel emotional pain all the time, but when we reject our emotions,we may actually make things worse. Often emotions arise as they give us useful information about the, world.     2

An alternative to pushing away our emotions is to accept them. Accepting means that we must practice allowing our emotions to be what they are without judging them.     3     When we’re happy,we have to accept not only that happiness is a short-term condition, but also that we won’t always be happy. This goes for every type of emotions.

Emotions help us decide what we should stay away from and what we should approach.     4     Therefore, accepting emotions is helpful, because when we listen to our emotions,we can actually learn important information.

5     After all, it’s our instincts (本能) to avoid them. With practice, though, we can learn to accept our emotions. Meditation (冥想) and mindful breathing exercises can be helpful.

A.We have emotions for a reason.
B.Actually,it is vital to handle our emotions.
C.It isn’t easy to learn how to accept emotions.
D.It also means accepting that emotions will change.
E.Then we may do something to get rid of that feeling.
F.Therefore, pushing away emotions isn’t the best idea.
G.Without emotions,we would make terrible decisions all the time.

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。主要讲述了作者和母亲对于表达爱时的关系,母亲的内敛和寡言少语让作者很不理解,但是最终一首诗让作者意味着女儿对她的理解。

7 . When reading, my mother likes to slice a paragraph or a sentence out and attach it to the wall of her kitchen. She picks boring sentences that puzzle me. But I prefer copying favorite bright lines into a journal in soft, gray No. 2 pencil, word by word.

She doesn’t know any of this. There's nothing shocking: for our chatting. we seldom begin certain conversations though we talk on the phone weekly, sometimes making each other laugh so hard that I choke and she cries. But what we don't say could fill up rooms. Fights with my father. Small failures in school. Anything that really upsets us.

My mother has never told me “I love you, Lisa.”—as if the four-word absence explains who I am—so I carry it with me, like a label on me. The last time she almost spoke the words was two years ago, when she called to tell me a friend had been in hospital. I said, “I love you, Mom.” She stopped for a while and then said, “Thank you.” I haven't said it since, but I've wondered why my mother doesn't until I've found a poem that supplies words for the blank spaces I try to understand in our conversations:

Don’t fill up on bread. I say absent-mindedly. The servings here are huge.

My son, middle-aged, says: Did you really just say that to me?

What he doesn’t know is that when we’re walking together, I desire to reach for his hand.

It's humble, yet heartbreaking. After copying it down in my journal, I emailed it to mom, adding “This poem makes me think of you.” My mother doesn’t read poetry—or at least, she doesn’t tell me, and I felt nervous clicking “Send”.

She never mentioned the poem. But the next time I went home for vacation, I noticed something new in the kitchen fixed to an antique board: the poem. The board hung above the heater, the warmest spot in the kitchen. The poem still hangs there. Neither my mother nor I have ever spoken about it.

1. What's the function of paragraph 1?
A.To stress the theme.B.To establish the setting.
C.To represent the characters.D.To create the atmosphere.
2. Which of the following best describes the mother daughter relationship?
A.Shaky.B.Distant.C.Reserved.D.Intense.
3. Why did the author send the poem to her mom?
A.It reminded her of mom's love.
B.She wanted to apologize to mom.
C.It suited mom's taste of literature.
D.She needed an interpretation from mom.
4. What does the poem mean to mom?
A.A memory of golden days.
B.Daughter’s gratefulness to her.
C.A decoration in the plain kitchen.
D.Daughter's understanding of her.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文,文章主要讲述了生活在国际空间站对宇航员精神方面的挑战。

8 . The ISS orbits Earth at an average of 250 miles from the surface of Earth and completes 15.5 circles per day, once every 92 minutes. In other words, the astronauts see the sunrise and sunset 16 times every day!

The station is inhabited by astronauts conducting research in various fields, while also using it as an observatory to explore Earth and outer space. It is also intended to be a transportation center for spacecraft that are bound for the Moon, Mars and other interplanetary voyages.

The crew is not only responsible for the scientific experimentation and research being conducted onboard, but also the upkeep and maintenance of the vessel, a vessel that is continuously in motion and exposed to the worst possible elements. Such conditions are significant area of study for researchers.

The most common effect of space is the initial contact — getting used to such an alien environment. Astronauts are often seen to display anxiety or depression as they adjust to the novelty of space, according to post-psychiatric screenings of astronauts. Other causes of stress are the high pressure of work while being under frequent public observation, being away from home and family, and missing important events.

Sleep is another major factor that affects the mood and efficiency of the astronauts. Due to the irregularity in life and the constant rotation (转动) of sunrise and sunset, the circadian rhythm (生理节律) of the astronauts goes completely haywire, resulting in poor quality of sleep. The shuttle itself is noisy, with essential equipment always in operation to sustain the vessel. Half of all the astronauts onboard rely on sleeping pills to get some rest and manage to get an average 2 hours less sleep than when they’re back on Earth. Sleep is so critical for functionality that 50% of all medicines taken by astronauts in orbit is to help them sleep better. Low-Earth Orbit living is a restless endeavor, indeed.

1. Which of the following is most likely to affect the astronauts’ mood?
A.Scientific experiments onboard.
B.Observation of outer space.
C.Interplanetary voyages.
D.Exposure to extreme conditions.
2. Which of the following can best explain the underlined phrase in the last paragraph?
A.Return to normal.B.Become out of control.
C.Go unnoticed.D.Remain unchanged.
3. How can we describe the astronauts’ life in the ISS?
A.Highly-pressured.B.Trouble-free.
C.Safe and sound.D.Quiet and beautiful.
4. What is mainly discussed in the passage?
A.The functions of the ISS.
B.The missions of the astronauts.
C.The mental challenges of living in the ISS.
D.The splendid view of the space.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。介绍了“巧合”这一心理学概念,一起研究认为其对人们和世界起到的巨大作用。

9 . People are looking to make meaning after the global pandemic. And one way that some of us do this is to credit coincidences—the unexpected concurrence (同时发生) of events—with helping to find jobs, friends and spouses, make significant career decisions and relieve pains. Scholars disagree on the cause of coincidences. Some say they are random and due to probability. Others see God or spiritual forces at work. Still others say it’s our subconscious making connections. No matter the cause, people who study coincidences say that paying attention to these moments may help us, especially in times of stress.

Studies show that noticing coincidences may help boost both the effectiveness of psychotherapy and mental well-being. Michael Schauch, 42, an investment-portfolio manager in Squamish, British Columbia, who is an avid mountaineer, lost his best friend Brent last year. A few months later, Mr. Schauch climbed a mountain he and Brent often scaled together. At the summit, Mr. Schauch found hundreds of ladybugs. When he climbed a different mountain on the anniversary of Brent’s death, he saw a ladybug as he started up each new section of the rock face. “I knew at once that it was Brent, and that he was still there with me, as if to say: ‘You’ve got this, Mike. Keep going!’” he says.

Coincidences can make the world feel like it makes good sense, says David B. Yaden, an assistant professor at the Johns Hopkins University School. Varieties of spiritual experiences show a correlation (关联) between coincidences and an increase in positive emotions, better personal relationships and a greater sense of meaning in life.

Coincidences are more likely to happen to certain people. “People who are troubled by distress and searching for signs are more likely to experience coincidences,” says Bemard Beitman, a psychiatrist and a coincidence researcher. If you’d like to enhance your ability to notice coincidences, there are several strategies, says Lisa Miller, a clinical psychologist: Be open to them. Write them down. Talk about them with others. “We really need this deep inner wisdom.” she says.

1. What can we learn about coincidences from paragraph 1?
A.They happen as expected.B.They provide guidance or relief.
C.They activate subconscious mind.D.They contribute to invisible forces.
2. Why does the author mention Michael Schalch’s story?
A.To clarify the cause of coincidences.
B.To offer a method of coping with grief.
C.To show the comforting effect of coincidences.
D.To present a solid friendship between two climbers.
3. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.Lucky people tend to be surprised by coincidences.
B.Wisdom is to the soul what mental health is to the body.
C.Coincidences mean more to our daily lives than the surface.
D.The more we cultivate coincidences, the more likely they happen.
4. What is the passage mainly about?
A.The meaningful moments in life.B.The hidden power of coincidences.
C.The various opinions on coincidences.D.The strategies for noticing coincidences.

10 . 阅读下面的材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。

After 22 years of marriage, I have discovered the secret to keep love alive in my relationship with my wife, Peggy. I started dating with another woman.

It was Peggy’s idea. One day she said to me, “Life is too short, you need to spend time with the people you love. You probably won’t believe me, but I know you love her and I think that if the two of you spend more time together, it will make us closer.”

The “other” woman my wife was encouraging me to date is my mother, a 72-year-old widow who has lived alone since my father died 20 years ago. Right after his death, I moved 2, 500 miles away to California and started my own life and career. When I moved back near my hometown six years ago, I promised myself that I would spend more time with Mom. But with the demands of my job and three kids, I never got around to seeing her much beyond family get-togethers and holidays.

Mom was surprised when I called and suggested the two of us go out to dinner.

“What’s wrong?” she asked.

“I thought it would be nice to spend some time with you,” I said. “Just the two of us.”

“I would like that a lot,” she said.

When I pulled into her driveway, she was waiting by the door with her coat on. Her hair was curled, and she was smiling. “I told my friends I was going out with my son, and they were all impressed. They can’t wait to hear about our evening,” Mom said.
