“April 23 is English Language Day,” says Melissa, jumping up and down. “What a surprise, dear. What would we have done without you reminding us?” jokes Lindsay.
Melissa burst out laughing loudly. “What I meant was that April 23 is a very special day for all of us and I just wanted to make sure non e of you forgot about it.”
“What are your plans for that day?” questions Rocky. “I want to do something special to promote our beautiful English language,” dreams Jennifer.
“I have an idea,” says Lindsay. “Mango Street’s house No. 10 has been recently occupied (居住) by a family who is not fluent in the English language.”
“Where are they from?” asks Melissa. “I don’t know that but I heard the lady talking to the grocery store owner. She had great difficulty explaining her requirements. Her son and daughter also could not understand much. Why don’t we help them improve their English?” wonders Jennifer.
“It is a wonderful idea. Shall we go and let them know what we think?” asks Rocky. “Not now. We will go to meet them tomorrow,” decides Jason.
The next day, the five friends ring the doorbell of house No.10. A young girl opens the door and smiles at them. “May we come in?” asks Melissa. “We are your neighbors.”
The girl calls her mother. The sweet fat lady invites them inside with a smile. All of them sit on the chairs laid out on the front porch (门廊).
Jason explains their plan of helping them understand and speak English better. The lady seems grateful.
“We will help you in learning how to speak and understand our language,” says Lindsay.
The lady smiles her thanks. She point s to the fruits on the table. Rocky picks up one fruit at a time and names it. Jason asks her to repeat. She tries a few times and is able to call each fruit by its name. Her son and daughter learn the names too.

Language is in a constant state of change. British English shows this clearly. Take the word “Cheerio!” for example. It has been a British way to say goodbye for more than a century, but it’s dying out as the English language evolves. These days, many young people simply say “laters”. Or take the word “marvelous”. At one time it was a common British word meaning “wonderful”, but over the last ten years it’s been overtaken by the American word “awesome”.
So how and why do words come into and fall out of fashion? The influence of US culture is only one explanation for why popular words in British English may change or even stop being used over time. “Awesome” is a good example, but also “fortnight”, a term not used in the US, is now falling out of fashion in British English, and in some cases has been replaced by “two weeks”.
New inventions also bring in new words. As old inventions are replaced by new ones, the words which described them also disappear and are replaced. So it’s out with the “Walkman” (a cassette player from the 80s) and in with MP4 players!
Then there’s the influence of social media. Text messages and emails have reduced words for convenience, with something like ICYMI (“in case you missed it”) becoming words in their own right. Where “friend” was once a noun, we now “friend someone on Facebook” and where we used to “love” something, now we’re “loving it”!

C.When they say goodbye. | D.When they meet new friends. |
A.Returns. | B.Develops. | C.Follows. | D.Falls. |
A.To show its importance. | B.To talk about its history. |
C.To describe how it came into being. | D.To explain how some words are replaced. |
A.It is changing the way that words are used. | B.It is making language difficult to learn. |
C.It is bringing in many long words. | D.It is making meanings clearer. |

5 . As children, our mother always taught my brother and me the value of acquiring life skills. “It sets you apart,” she would say. While my brother chose the path of mastering musical instruments, I gravitated towards the field of languages. Growing up in a multilingual household where Mandarin, Cantonese, and English mixed, I felt it natural to continue exploring new linguistic possibilities.
Languages fascinated me. I was attracted by the way words gracefully rolled off tongues and how each language seemed to unlock a door to an entirely new world, no matter how challenging they were to learn.
Eager to try beyond Asian languages, it was my mother who suggested French as a suitable starting point. The elegance and poetic charm of the language quickly attracted me. The melodic flow and the way the words effortlessly danced off my tongue caused a thrilling feeling, fuelling my desire to explore deeper into its complexity. Interestingly, despite my passion and talent for it, French proved to be the language that took the longest to fully grasp. Nevertheless, I insisted and never gave up expanding my linguistic arsenal (宝库).
After realizing that Spanish wasn’t the right fit for me, I found myself addicted to the fascinating world of German. Being enrolled in a German-speaking school speeded my progress, and when two years, my command of German surpassed (超过) my years of studying French. As time passed, I added Latin, Ancient Greek, and Japanese to my linguistic arsenal.
It fact, speaking multiple languages is not a mere accomplishment; it is a joyous celebration of the richness of human expression. For me, it serves as a powerful tool to develop connections with others on a great level, where humanity unites in a shared pursuit of compassion, harmony and mutual respect.

8 . As I look up at the hundreds of fireworks in the sky, I hear the bells ringing in a small temple welcoming the coming of the Chinese New Year. Though I may not believe in or understand many of the New Year traditions here, the similarities between the coming of this New Year and the beginning of my new life in China are not lost on a big boy like me.
My first few days in China were a cultural shock to say the least. Having arrived late in the semester, I immediately had to begin my beginners’ Chinese classes, along with the newest class of overseas students. Being surrounded by a language that isn’t your own is unbelievably annoying. Due to the picture-based fashion of Chinese writing, it’s not like you can have a guess, or work it out through whatever knowledge you have from other Latin-originated languages. If you don’t know what it says, then that’s it. However, with time passing, I have found myself progressing, though painfully slowly. The first time I called a taxi by myself, the driver actually understood where I wanted to go, which is hugely rewarding. Still it is never long before my lack of language skill is exposed (暴露的) and I come crashing back to earth, usually immediately upon leaving the taxi.
Gaining a language is a huge valuable skill. However, it is not the only thing I will gain in China. After this year of learning Chinese, I aim to gain my master’s degree here at University of Jinan. Opportunities do come around rather often: from being offered jobs teaching English, to being asked to appear on game-shows for Shandong TV. So, for now, I am just looking forward to expanding my cultural horizons (眼界) and enjoying my time here. I take some time to get used to everything, but that’s part of the adventure and, most of all, employment. So, much like the Chinese New Year that I am lucky enough to be part of, I am just looking forward to a fresh start and a new journey in China.
