1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

My father and I disagreed about my curfew (晚间在家的时间). He would say I had to be in by 9:30 on weekdays, and 11:00 on weekends, and there was no exception. One day, I took courage to first show my opinion on my curfew. I told him it made me feel like a junior high school kid. He explained that though a curfew might sound like a restriction, it was really about people looking out for one another.

The very next Friday after that exchange, my dad and I had tickets to see our own town's professional football game. On that day he was driving his car to a nearby city to meet some major clients and told me that his getting home and our leaving for the game would be tight.

To make sure we could move off the moment he came back, I got everything prepared. When half an hour had passed from the time when he said he would be home, I understood that he was a little late. But then, nearly a whole hour passed. I was getting upset. We were going to miss the kick-off! And why hadn’t he phoned me and let me know he was going to be really late? As I anxiously stepped the floor, another half hour passed. That was when I got really angry. How inconsiderate my father was! We were going to miss the whole game! However, when another half an hour passed, my anger turned to fear. What if something terrible had happened to my dad, like he had a sudden heart attack or was caught in an accident, or something else? I began to get really worried, feeling like sitting on pins and needles. I had already called his cell phone about ten times, but there was no answer.

3 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I was excited as I walked into the classroom. Today was my birthday! I set down the box of treats I had brought for the class. Birthdays were a big deal in our classroom. The birthday person brought treats for the class, and he or she got to choose someone our teacher called “the birthday helper" to pass them out. My friends, Andrea, Crystal and I had talked about choosing each other on our birthdays. I still hadn't decided which of my two best friends I was going to choose. I knew both of them were expecting me to pick them, but I just couldn't decide. I didn't want either one of them to be mad at me.

A loud shout stopped my thoughts. “Hi, April!" shouted Lisa.

No one liked Lisa. She had dirty hair that looked like it always needed to be washed. The kids made fun of her a lot. She annoyed me sometimes, too, but I tried to be nice to her.

"Did you bring treats today?"

“Yes," I answered.“ Today is my birthday!"

Lisa's parents were divorced(离婚的),and her dad gave her and her mom lots of problems. Lisa once told me that I was the only friend she had. At times I felt embarrassed to hang out with her, but she never seemed to notice when I didn't want her around.

The bell rang, and we quickly went to our seats. Our teacher, Mrs. Doughty, started class, and I pushed aside my thoughts. The rest of the morning flew by, and soon it was time for the lunch break.

Mrs. Doughty announced that today was my birthday. I forced a smile, but my stomach turned over. I retrieved(取回) my cupcakes at the back of the room and slowly went to stand beside Mrs. Doughty. I didn't know what to do! Should I choose Andrea or Crystal?

Then Lisa caught my attention.

“No one ever chooses me on their birthday!" she said loudly. Her face looked so sad. I saw the hurt she felt from the rejection(嫌弃) she constantly faced from our classmates.

I was 11 years old when I asked my mom for a piano and piano lessons. Even I myself didn’t know how to stop the fever growing from my whole heart and soul. What interested me most was the fantastic feeling of standing in the spotlight and being admired by tens of thousands of music fans.

But we were affected by the economic decline. In fact, we could barely make ends meet at that time and even couldn’t afford to buy our favorite cheese cakes . So she said a polite “no”.

That didn’t stop me. I Googled the measurements for a keyboard, drew the keys on a piece of paper and stuck it on my desk. I would click notes (音符) on an online keyboard and “play” them back on my paper one—keeping the sound they made on the computer in my head. I spent six months playing without touching a real piano. I was occupied by the thought of playing a real piano. The desire was so strong that I could hardly control my passion.

Once my mom saw that I was serious, she borrowed money and bought me 10 lessons. I still remember the first one. I was struck by how real the sound of the piano was. The sound was so pure and inviting that nobody could drag me away from the magic musical instrument. I held it dear. My mother stood in front of it, listening attentively to my playing with tears in her eyes. I sat my grade one after eight lessons. Once I started secondary school, we couldn’t afford lessons again. I passed grade three, then grade five, practicing only on my piece of paper.

My school didn’t offer music A-level. I found the Purcell School for young musicians. The tryouts were difficult. Some of the questions involved an evaluation of the composer or when some piece was written. I felt depressed. Would I step back? I said to myself a polite “no”.

5 . When I decided to leave my home country to pursue a degree in Canada, I hadn’t expected that communication would be an issue.    1    I took English lessons in my teens and scored well on English tests.

But soon after my arrival in Canada, I realized how wrong I was. In research discussions, surrounded by native English speakers, I had to be careful. I needed to consciously follow each conversation and translate it to my native language.    2    Finally, I tried to find the right English words to communicate that response. Constantly thinking about what I would say next, I had a hard time remaining focused in conversations.

But when I again failed to say exactly what I meant in a meeting a few months later, a simple idea occurred to me.     3    Communicating with my colleagues by e-mail, I had more time to think and comfortably express my thoughts. Over time, this practice helped improve my English significantly.

4    I decided to remind them that English is not my first language. I asked them to speak more slowly to help me follow the discussions. It was a little awkward to draw attention to what might be seen as a weakness. And at first, the other members of the research team seemed slightly surprised. But the dynamics quickly improved. They seemed to become more aware of how they were speaking, and I felt more comfortable joining in the conversation.    5

A.Plus, I learned to be open with my colleagues.
B.Why not contribute to the discussion in writing?
C.I had thought I could express myself in English easily.
D.Gradually I grew uncomfortable with oral communication.
E.Then, I had to reflect carefully on it and think of a response.
F.With efforts on both sides, we could overcome language barriers.
G.How can one deny the significance of effective communication?

8 . We lived in a very quiet neighborhood. One evening I heard a loud crash in the street. Earlier that evening my wife had asked me to go to the store to get some soft drinks. It seemed that this would be a good time to let my teenage daughter Holly practice her driving, so I sent her to the store in my truck. At dinner my son talked about how much he liked my truck. I enjoyed having it, but I said: “Guy, my heart is not set on that truck. I like it but it is just metal and won' t last forever. Never set your heart on anything that won't last.” After hearing the loud noise, the whole family ran outside. My son shouted: “Dad! Dad, Holly crashed your truck.”

The accident had happened in my own driveway. Holly had crashed my truck into our other vehicle. In her inexperience, she had confused the brakes and the gas pedal . Holly was unhurt physically but when we reached her, she was crying and saying: “Oh, Dad, I'm sorry. I know how much you love this truck.” I held her in my arms as she cried.

Later that week a friend stopped by and asked what had happened to my truck. I told her the whole story. Her eyes moistened and she said : “That happened to me when I was a girl. When I got home, my Dad knocked me to the ground and began to kick me.” Over 40 years later, she still felt the pain of the night.

9 . On the first day of fourth grade, my teacher, Mrs. Brown, told my class a story about her husband Rob, who is a brain cancer survivor. After what Mrs. Brown experienced with Robs’ illness, she decided to devote part of her life to an organization called Be head Strong, which works to support families with a member suffering from brain cancer.

Along with typical math and science, throughout the year, Mrs. Brown shared stories with us about people in Be Head Strong who had overcome some tough and unfair battles. Mrs. Brown never showed any sadness or confusion toward the disease. She instead spoke only with words of determination to find a cure. Whether news from Be Head Strong was good or bad, she always looked at the situation as an opportunity to improve and do more.

My parents taught me from a very young age that making wise choices with my money is important. I would always set aside most of my $ 2.50-a-week allowance. By the end of the school year, I had saved over one hundred dollars, $ 131.30 to be exact. One day was wondering what to do with it. I did not feel like any game or toy was worth the time I had spent saving. I thought about the stories Mrs. Brown told us, then I decided that was where I wanted my money to go.

As the last day of school approached, my mom helped me wrap the heart-shaped box full of dollars and coins. After all the other kids had left on the last day of school, I handed Mrs. Brown the present. As she opened it, I told her that I wanted the money to go to Be Head Strong to help people like Rob. She broke into tears and hugged me tightly.

People may not always realize how big of an influence one kind gesture can make. One teacher encouraged a decision in my life that has changed the way how I live.
