1 . During the 1930s, the Great War broke out. A 25-year-old American soldier, probably never thought that his life would change forever when he volunteered to go to France.
One night while the American unit was returning to the base after a bloody fight, Suleyman stumbled into the ground and noticed a bit of movement from the bush. Being stuck between two choices either its enemy or an animal, Suleyman found a five-year-old girl from the bushes shivering with cold and utmost fear. Due to the atrocity of the war, the girl was abandoned by her family and the whole village was killed.
During the war, it was impossible to find the child’s family so Suleyman took this little French girl under his wings and gave her an American name Flora which means like the flower. Soon, Flora became the apple of the eye of everyone living in the army camp.
For one and a half years, Flora and Suleyman became inseparable; however, every fairy tale comes to an end. When the war ended, Suleyman was sent back to USA, while Flora was put in an orphanage, the Normandy School, which was founded by the American government for orphaned French children to have an education.
For years, Suleyman always thought about Flora. When the French National Olympic Team was playing in the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles in 1984, Suleyman gazed through the audience on TV, hoping to catch a glimpse of Flora, but he never could.
At the age of 85, Suleyman attended the 60th anniversary reception of the Great War where Suleyman shared his story with American and French officials. After hearing his story, a French journalist started to investigate the story, and all government files were read in detail. The moment the journalist helped dial the number, in tears, Flora said Suleyman was her hero, and everything came flooding back to her.

A cactus (仙人掌) stood all alone in the desert, wondering why it was stuck in the middle of the desert. “I do nothing but stand here all day,” it sighed. “What use do I have? I am the ugliest plant in the desert. My spines (刺) are thick, my leaves are tough, and my skin is uneven. I can’t offer shade or juice to the passing travellers. I don’t see that I am of any use at all.” All it did was stand in the sun day after day, growing taller and fatter. Its spines grew longer and its leaves grew tougher. It truly was strange-looking.
“I wish I could do something useful,” it signed. By day, hawks (鹰) circled high overhead, and the cactus called, “What can I do with my life?” Whether they heard or not, the hawks flew away. At night the moon floated into the sky and cast its pale light on the desert floor. “What can I do with my life?” the cactus called. The moon only stared coldly as it continued its course.
A lizard (蜥蜴) passed by, leaving a little trail in the sand with its tail. “What worthy deed can I do?” the cactus called. “You?” the lizard smiled, pausing a moment. “You can do something. Just wait for the right moment. The hawks circle their ways overhead, making beautiful patterns for us all to admire. The moon hangs high like a lantern at night, so we can see our ways home to our loved ones. Even I, the lowly lizard, have something to do. I decorate the sands with these beautiful trails as I pull my tail along. And you, you will show us your beauty some day.”
Paragraph 1:
It went on year after year, and the cactus grew old.

4 . A jobless man wanted very much to have the position of “office boy” at Microsoft. The HR manager interviewed him and then watched him cleaning the floor as a test. “You have passed the test,” he said. “Give me your email address and I’ll send you the form to fill in and the date when you may start.” The man replied, “But I don’t have a computer, neither an email.” “I’m sorry,” said the HR manager. “If you don’t have an email, that means you are not living. And anyone who isn’t living cannot have the job.”
The man left with no hope at all. He didn’t know what to do with only $10 in his pocket. He thought and thought. Then he went to the supermarket and bought 10 kilos of tomatoes. Shortly, he bought a cart, then a truck, then he had his own fleet of delivery vehicles. Five years later, the man was one of the biggest food retailers (零售商) in the US.
One day, one of his friends asked him for his email. He said, “I haven’t got one.” His friend couldn’t believe his ears. “Can you imagine what you could have been if you had an email?” The man thought for a while and replied, “Yes, I’d be an office boy at Microsoft!”

8 . Jack has a very effective technique when he’s determined to get his way and he’s using it now staring at Suzannah, trying, she feels, to see into her soul. He doubtless can, of course, seeing as the very first day they met. He walked over to her and in that quiet yet confident way he had told her exactly what she was thinking.
“Look, Sure,” Jack says, in the soft, persuasive tone she’s never been able to resist, “we’ll only be borrowing it for two days. There’ll be no problem.”
Suzannah trembles inwardly. Jack wants to borrow her father’s car for the weekend while her parents are away, so they can take a group of friends to a party in a town 200 kilometres away. He won’t be insured to drive the car, and their no-doubt drunken friends will urge him on to drive ridiculously fast. He’s far from a safe driver.
“It’s not a good idea,” she resists weakly. “Imagine if we had an accident.”
“Suze. Trust me.” Again, the deep, warm look into her eyes and she’s near to giving in even though she knows she shouldn’t. She wants to please him. She’s about to agree when suddenly a small voice speaks up inside her.
“Suzannah,” the voice says, “you can’t allow this.” And she knows that for once she’s going to have to say no and do what’s right.
“No, Jack,” Suzannah says, surprised by how firm her voice sounds. “Just no.”
His eyes widen and he looks at her carefully. There’s a long pause and then his face breaks into a huge smile.
“Good girl,” he says, “you made the right decision,” and he kisses her gently on the forehead.
And with the warm kiss she knows that there is, after all, real hope for them.

In my memory, my grandfather was kind and not good at expressing himself. I never knew that he really thought. He never judged book by its cover and treated people around him equal. When I was in primary school, I sent with him a letter, telling him how much I loved him. He never mentioned that he had received the letter and I never asked. When he passed away, I cleaned out my things. I found the letter hiding in his bedroom. On the back of the letter, he writes: “I’m so glad you love me, my grandson. I love you, either.” At that moment, I was so moved that I burst into tear.
