After starting to play basketball at just four years old, Riley Morrison became fond of the sport. Now, the nine-year-old spends most of her time practicing her skills and playing for a basketball team in California.
When she’s not playing basketball herself, the fourth grader likes watching her favorite basketball player, Stephen Curry, play for the Golden State Warriors, which also happens to be Morrison’s favorite NBA team. According to Morrison, she has been a longtime fan of Curry because of his impressive and dynamic basketball skills that lead to him being awarded MVP more than once as well as a few championship titles. And when Morrison goes to Warrior games with her dad, Chris Morrison, she always wears her No. 30 Warriors shirt to show support for her favorite player.
However, Morrison isn’t Curry’s fan just for his basketball skills. For Morrison and other young girl basketball players, Curry is a hero because of what he has been doing for women’s rights. Besides supporting his wife, Ayesha, and their two young daughters, Curry has hosted a girls’ basketball camp to encourage young women athletes.
When Morrison was starting her basketball season this year, she needed to get new sneakers (运动鞋) as her old ones were getting too small and too worn. It didn’t take long for the 9-year-old to decide she wanted to play in Under Armour’s Curry 5 sneakers.
After asking her dad about the sneakers, the pair went on the Under Armour website to look for Morrison’s dream shoes. Unfortunately, the Curry 5 sneakers weren’t available for girls. Instead, the sneakers were only available on the website’s boys’ section.
Chris could tell how upset his daughter was. He suggested she do something about it if she felt it was unfair. “Well maybe you can write a letter,” Chris told her daughter.

Last year, with Christmas approached, my sisters and I felt quite thrilled. However, one day after Christmas, my father gathered us together. He told us he can’t afford any presents, even our traditional treat. As the oldest child, I felt upset and understandable. My mother had a serious disease, who cost my family much money to constant seek a cure. On the Christmas Eve, we heard a knock on the door. Unexpectedly, two our neighbors came in with some gifts. It kept we entertained. I will never forget the two kind neighbors who have always been inspiring me to share anything with those in need.

Standing in the craft (工艺) store, I looked at the painting supplies in awe (敬畏). There were so many items that I had no idea where to start. I saw various tools for painting and several things I had no idea what to do with.
I held gift cards and coupons (优惠券) in my hand. My friends and family had asked what I wanted, and I was very clear this year. I had thought over the idea for months, but I would need supplies. Instead of replying modestly with“I’ll be happy with whatever you choose”, I said pointedly, “Gift cards for the craft store.”
“Are you sure this is what you want for your birthday?” my husband asked hesitantly.
“I’m very sure. I really want to give it a go,” I replied. I was smiling with anticipation (期盼). “I’ve never painted before, and I think it’s time to expand myself.”
He looked at me doubtfully and shook his head.
Truth must be told—this was a secret I’d kept for a while. Every day, he packed up for work and left. I would take care of my son and get him off to school, clean the house, go to the grocery shop and prepare dinner before they both walked in the door at the same time.
It had been a decade since I took any time to follow my own pursuits. I used to love to read; now my books collected dust from lack of time. I used to love to hike; now my boots sat neglected in the back of my closet. I used to love to sew, but my machine was in a state of disrepair for longer than I owned it.
I missed doing all those things, but somehow I never found my way back to them. I had become a drudge (苦工). I wanted excitement and creative expression, but mostly I wanted color.
I selected the most interesting supplies. “Are you really sure about this? I have a feeling you’re going to store all these in the back of a closet and never touch it again.” I almost listened to him. For a split moment, I doubted my commitment.

5 . To those normal kids, it’s not unusual to hear “Goodnight” when you kiss them, saying “Goodnight” to them. For most parents, it’s just a storm in a teacup. However, for me it’s opposite.
My son James, suffered from the autism spectrum disorder (ASD), a developmental disability caused by differences in the brain. Some people with ASD may have advanced conversation skills whereas James is an exception.
Pre-diagnosis, I’d give James a big kiss and whisper goodnight when putting James to bed. Post-diagnosis, the silence that I received in return was deafening. It had never occurred to me before to be concerned that when I said “Goodnight, James. I love you”, my toddler said nothing in response.
I needed to hear him say something. My husband and I began to promote James to say goodnight back to us. “Say goodnight, Mommy.” For over a year, “Say goodnight, Mommy” was the parting routine of the day. Every night, it made me cry. I never got used to it. But I never gave up hope.
With more efforts, one night, I’d hear something more organic come out of James’s mouth. He dropped the “say”— and his response became “goodnight, Mommy” when James turned four. It was fantastic — but it was still prompted. At six, I got my first unprompted, “Goodnight, Mommy. I love you.” Next to my wedding, and births of my children, this was the most exciting night of my life.
James, now eight, routinely kisses us goodnight and tells us he loves us. The other evening, after giving me a big hug and kiss, James told me, “You’re a great mom! You’re not a mom with feathers, or a mom with colors and markers. I’m glad you’re a... a person!” I don’t know if he had the book Are You My Mother? on his mind, or if this was just one of the many random thoughts that crossed my son’s brain on a daily basis. I do know it was music to my ears.

9 . Noah Wall recently celebrated his ninth birthday. The little boy from Cumbria, England, uses a wheelchair to get around. He’s incredibly smart and loves learning about the solar system. His life is pretty normal, which is astonishing considering doctors didn’t even expect Noah to survive his first birthday.
His mom, Michelle Wall, was pregnant when tests revealed that her little one had spina bifida (脊椎裂). When they performed more tests, a scan of Noah’s head showed a cyst (囊肿) that was destroying his brain.
Michelle and her husband Rob prayed for a wonder. On the day Noah was born, he let out a huge cry the moment he appeared to let his parents know that their little guy wasn’t going down without a fight!
Scans showed that just 2 percent of Noah’s brain had survived the cyst in his head. Seven weeks after birth, he received an operation to close the opening in his spine and place a shunt (分流管) in his head to lead fluid (积液) away from his brain.
Yet Noah is not mentally disabled. In fact, he’s impressively clever! At 9, he is physically active and dreams of becoming an astronaut someday.
“They told us he might not be able to speak, hear, eat, or anything,” Michelle said. “But I see he can tell the time, read, do maths and love science He can talk about the solar system He has incredible dreams”.
Noah has gone through 11 surgeries so far and there are many more to come, but he has already exceeded everyone’s expectations—in every possible way!
“Every single day he does something that impresses me” Michelle said “I’m so extremely proud of him I will help him all I can and always be there for him”.
Noah! What a wonderful reminder of the importance of keeping hope alive!
