1 . 阅读下面短文,在空白处填人1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。

Wang Hongmei, a master in the Forbidden City, specializes in restoring damaged paintings. “I found conservation of paintings extremely    1    (challenge) at the beginning when I often had to stand for hours all day long due to the nature of the work.” Wang    2    (recall). “Commitment and time    3    (gradual) calmed down my heart.”

It takes a seasoned conservationist like Wang a whole year    4    (restore) just three to four paintings. Sometimes the work could take even    5    (long). A scenic painting over 170 square meters in size,    6    was created by Emperor Qianlong for his retirement, was worn. Wang and her colleagues spent five years restoring the painting to its previous brilliance.

“These treasures are not simply individual items,    7    heritages (遗产) of the craft and spirit passed on by the artists, collectors and conservationists of the past,” Qu Feng, one of Wang’s     8    (workmate), said. “Strengthened conservation efforts symbolize increasing national power and    9    (proud). If we can protect our cultural heritage to the best of our abilities, our nation will come to believe    10    itself more firmly.”

Due to the efforts by the masters in the Forbidden City, the public now can have a further understanding of cultural heritage protection.

8 . There is no point destroying your peace of mind and happiness by taking the wrong job. Society may pressure you into grabbing (抓住) whatever you can get. If you do not have a set path that must be taken, then you have the opportunity to choose something you will not only be paid for doing, but enjoy.

One of the best ways of finding a suitable career is to determine your personality type. It may seem obvious that the creative (创造性的) type does not really find much pleasure in a job as a butcher (屠夫) or dry cleaning assistant (助手), and that weak character may not find happiness in a career based on teaching or leading a team.

To find the best job for your personality type, the first step is to know what and who you really are. If you already know your style, you can search for suitable employment; however, if you are uncertain, there are ways that will help you discover who and what you are. For example, an employment centre, a career adviser or an online quiz can help you.

Taking my own situation for example, am definitely (明确地) a creative type. Besides, I prefer to be my own boss or, if I cannot, at least I want to rely on a boss I truly both respect and admire. I do not like telling people what to do, or being told what to do. I do not relate well to regular 9-5 hours. I do not feel satisfied being paid a high wage for a bad job. I feel much happier at home. Combining my creativity, independence, and desire to stay at home, my ideal (理想的) career would be running home-operated- business involving (涉及) creativity. I actually happen to have chosen this solution; I am a writer, poet, author and publisher. I have suited my career to my personality type.

1. The first paragraph is used as a(n) ________.
A.exampleB.introductionC.conclusionD.contrast
2. The author thinks in order to find the right job we should first know about ________.
A.something about employment centreB.online job markets
C.our personality typesD.the economic situation
3. Which of the following statements about the author is TRUE?
A.He prefers to rely on his colleagues.
B.He dislikes home-operated businesses.
C.He likes giving orders to others and doesn’t like facing orders.
D.He doesn’t like the usual way of doing things.
4. What is the main idea of the passage?
A.Creativity and chances of success.
B.Jobs and your peace of mind.
C.Following the set path and making life easier.
D.Finding the right job for your personality type.

9 . So often we find ourselves on autopilot—waking up in the same home, putting on the same clothes and taking the same transportation to the same-old job.    1    And while it’s perfectly natural for humans to stick to routine, there’s much to be discovered beyond the limits of our comfort zones.

There is no exception to a man aged 53.    2    He knew it was going to be hard to find another job. He also knew it was now or never to pursue his lifelong dream of owning his own restaurant. But he was too old to compete with the young and too weak to do any labor work.

3    He didn’t want to spend his rest life sitting around and feeling pity for himself. Also, Mrs. Mockenhaupt actively encouraged him to move on, considering it a perfect chance for two of them to start their own business with plenty of time and without the disturbance of children.

4    Brian found just what he wanted eight blocks from home—an existing cafe that was underperforming and whose owner was highly motivated to get out of his lease (租期).    5    But the problem was that he had never financially planned for this day. He had to borrow money from friends and relatives. After that, he changed the name to Black Dog Coffee, and made it alive again. Eighteen years later, they’re still there and doing better than ever. Brian says he’s extremely grateful for the decision to make a change.

A.Then came the opportunity.
B.The thought filled him with anxiety.
C.That was exactly what Brian needed.
D.Even our New Year’s decisions to change hardly make it.
E.With the support of his family, he took a job in the local cafe.
F.Several weeks after consideration, he decided to have a change.
G.Brian Mockenhaupt got laid off from a senior management position.
