3 . Directions:Read the following passage. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two sentences more than you need.

Talk to any parent of a student who took an adventurous gap year and a misty(有雾的)look will come into their eyes. There are some, disasters and even the most motivated, organized gap student does require family support, financial, emotional and physical The parental mistiness is not just about the brilliant experience that has matured their kids. It is vicarious(感同身受)living.    1    Now we can see how much tougher our kids become; how much more prepared they are to benefit from university or to decide positively that they are going to do something other than a degree.

2    Pictures of Prince William toiling in Chile have helped, and the trend has been developing for a decade. The range of gap packages starts with backpacking, includes working with charities and, very commonly, working as a language assistant. With this trend, however, comes a danger. Once parents feel that a well-structured year is essential to their would-be undergraduate’s progress to a better university and well-paid employment, as the gap companies suggest it might be, then parents will start organizing and paying for the gaps.

Where there are disasters, according to Richard Oliver, director of the Year Out Group, it is usually because of poor planning.    3    “When people get it wrong, it is usually medical, or especially among girls, it is that they have not been away from home before or because expectation does not match reality.”

The point of a gap year is that it should be the time when the school leaver gets to do the thing that he or she fancies.    4

The 18-year-old who was sent by his parents at two weeks’ notice to Canada to learn to be a snowboarding instructor at a cost of £5,800, probably came back with little gain. The 18-year-old on the same package who worked for his fare and spent the rest of his year instructing in resorts from New Zealand to Switzerland, and came back to apply for university, is the positive counterbalance.

A.We all wish pre-university gap years had been the fashion in our day.
B.Kids don’t mature if mum and dad decide how they are going to mature.
C.Gap years are fashionable, as is reflected in the huge growth in the number of charities and private companies offering them.
D.That can be the fault of the company or of the student, but, the best insurance is thoughtful preparation.
E.UK has sought to limit the number of students who take a year out, punishing students who delay their education to travel abroad or work full-time.
F.Plan My Gap-Year is an award-winning international organization, specializing in volunteer abroad programmes

Hardly any of us have experienced real violence, but, over the last few years, attacks on innocent people have increased. Karate will show you a lot of simple and effective techniques to protect yourself, giving you increase self-confidence.

Far too many people think martial arts (武术) are about violence. Martial arts training is based on a lot of respect, self-discipline, self-control and non-violence. We learn basic etiquette, courtesy and tolerance. Good manners and consideration for others are expected at all times.

Karate is the practice of blocking and striking techniques for the purpose of self-defence, health and self-development. Karate exercises the entire body. Techniques are practised on both sides of the body, therefore muscle imbalances do not occur and the strength, coordination, flexibility and agility of both sides of the body are improved. Regular training in Karate improves the body’s physical endurance and flexibility. It also helps concentration and produces the mental calm and assurance that come from knowing we can defend ourselves.

Karate has many benefits but they do not come easily or overnight. Training requires ongoing commitment and hard work. Some of you will give up, but a few of you will get your black belt.

8 . Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.

The high school prom is the first formal social event for most American teenagers. It has also been a ceremony of passage for young Americans for nearly a century.

The word “prom was first used in the 1890s, referring to formal dances in which the guests of a party would display their fashions and dancing skills during the evening’s grand march. In the United States, parents and educators have come to regard the prom as an important lesson in social skills. Therefore, proms have been held every year in high schools for students to learn proper social behavior.

The first high school proms were held in the 1920s in America. By the 1930s, proms were common across the country. For many older Americans, the prom was a modest, home-grown affair in the school gymnasium. Prom-goers were well dressed but not fancily dressed up for the occasion: boys wore jackets and ties and girls their Sunday dresses. Couples danced to music provided by a local music band or a record player. After the 1960s, and especially since the 1980s, the high school prom in many areas has become a serious exercise in too much consumption, with boys renting expensive tuxedos and girls wearing designer gowns. Expensive cars were hired to drive the prom-goers to expensive restaurants or discos for an all-night entertainment.

Whether simple or abundant, proms have always been more or less unpleasant events for adolescents who worry about self-image and fitting in with their fellow teenagers. Prom night can be a dreadful experience for teens who are not good at social skills or for those who do not secure dates. Since the 1990s, alternative proms have been organized in some areas to meet the needs of particular students. For example, proms organized by and for homeless youth were reported. There were also “couple-free proms to which all students are welcome.

9 . A Lesson Goes Viral

At the end of 2014, Tulsa, Oklahoma, sixth-grade teacher Melissa Bour received a friend request on Facebook from one of her students. She didn’t accept the request, but a quick browse through the girl’s friends list revealed the names of dozens of kids from her classroom. Many of the students’ Facebook pages were completely public, meaning even strangers could search through the kids’ personal photos and messages.

“I saw middle fingers, students dressed inappropriately, and extremely offensive language,” Melissa says. “It was disturbing.” When she brought up her discovery in class, the students thought is was nothing. So she created a post of her own.

With a bright green Sharpie, she wrote on a piece of paper in all caps, “Dear Facebook: My 12-year-old students think it is ‘no big deal’ that they are posting pictures of themselves... Please help me... [show them] how quickly their images can get around.” She put a picture of the letter on her Facebook page and asked people to share it.

In hours, it was shared 108,000 times across dozens of states and four countries. She deleted it after eight hours, but it continued to spread. “I wanted to show them that it’s on the Internet forever,” she says.

As she explained the results of her experiment in class, the students’ “eyes got bigger and bigger,” she says. “It scared a few of them into deleting their pages completely,” she says. Others have removed inappropriate posts and used privacy settings to manage their pages.

Her intention wasn’t to scare them off social media but to push them to be mindful of what they post. Melissa says, “I tell them, ‘just because everyone else is sharing doesn’t mean you have to.’”

1. What did Melissa Bour find about her students’ Fackbook pages?
A.They were not accessible to strangers.
B.They contained improper messages.
C.They appealed a lot to the public.

2. Why did Melissa put a picture of the letter on her Fackbook page?
A.To prove the potential threat caused by sharing something online.
B.To help students learn how to post something on Facebook.
C.To turn to the public for tips on proper use of Fackbook.
D.To scare her students off all social media.
3. After Melissa told her students about the results of her experiment, they_______.
A.ignored her warnings completely
B.began to share something meaningful
