1 . Between childhood and adulthood, you go through many changes — jobs, regrettable haircuts and relationships that come and go. But what about who you are at your core (核心)?     1

Personality is the pattern of thoughts, feelings and behaviors unique to a person. People tend to think of personality as fixed. But according to psychologists (心理学家), that’s not how it works; personality doesn’t stay the same all your life.     2

That’s not to say that you’re a different person each day you wake up.     3     In a study, researchers followed some adults for many years until their early 70s. They discovered that adulthood’s personality is actually stable in short time periods.

4     They will look at how a child reacts to the world. Research suggests that our childhood’s moods — for example, whether we’re easy-going or bad-tempered, willing or unwilling to approach strangers — shape our personality of older ages.     5     If a child is always shy and withdrawn (离群的), he may grow into an unhappy teenager. On the contrary, a happy childhood usually leads to a happy adulthood.

A.Instead, it changes — develops with age.
B.Growing into adulthood, what do you care about?
C.As you grow older, does your personality change?
D.However, you don’t have to be sad about the change.
E.In fact, the change can’t even be noticed in the short term.
F.Psychologists don’t study children’s personalities, however.
G.And these early moods seem to be related to our later years of life.

3 . Over the years working as a psychologist, I have found that the following habits seem to be the most important for developing a happier, healthier mind,

    1
By nature, most of us are critical of our emotions—especially the difficult ones: You feel anxious and afraid and then immediately criticize yourself for being weak. Though something feels bad, it doesn’t mean it is bad.     2     When your muscles are painful after a good workout, your pain is a sign of growth and health. Sometimes pain is helpful. By avoiding it or trying to get rid of it, you could be making things worse on yourself.
Be realistic with your expectations.

When you create an expectation in your head—which is really just you imagining the thing you want to be true—it relieves some of that anxiety and uncertainty for the time being. But in reality, your expectations are merely fictions in your own mind.

Expectations have their place.     3     If you want a calmer and more peaceful mind, get into the habit of checking on your expectations regularly and make sure they aren’t too far outside of reality.

Practice compassion (同情) in your self-talk.

4    When you’re too negative and particular about yourself, you turn normal embarrassment into intense shame; everyday depression into anger; ordinary sadness into desperation. If you want to start being kinder toward yourself, follow The Other Golden Rule:     5     The next time you feel bad, imagine that a good friend felt the same way and came to you for support and advice... What would you say to them?

A.Acknowledge your emotions.
B.Try to avoid painful emotions.
C.Negative self-talk worsens your emotions.
D.In much of life, pain is actually a good thing.
E.Treat yourself like you would treat a good friend.
F.But they may run wild and cause negative effects if ignored.
G.They teach your brain that your emotions are bad and dangerous.

5 . When I was a kid I was a bit of a scaredy-cat. The "adventurer" in my family has always been my big brother. Still, I'm always trying to shake up the scaredy-cat inside me. And I've always known how important it is for girls to feel brave. However, girls, at large, experience so much hesitancy and a drop in confidence as they grow up.

One way to stop losing heart is to encourage a sense of adventure in girls before they are teenagers. Such adventures don't have to be big. Research from Angelia Ruskin University shows that even just going for a walk or a run outside leaves people feeling more confident and better about their bodies. After all nature doesn't care how we look. It doesn't care who our friends are or what grades we get. It is a place where we can really be ourselves.

That's why I teamed up with Amy Blackwell, the award-winning illustrator, to create a middle-grade book containing real-life women's adventures from around the world, from 2,000 years ago to today. The Girl Who Rode a Shark and Other Stories of Daring Women has been receiving star reviews in lots of places.

It is all of those amazing women that make the book a hit. While reading, they can trace the ocean-soaring flights of pilot Amelia Earhart, follow Isabella Bird's exploration up the Yangtze River and meet Kimi Werner, the freediving chef who met with a great white shark. That's why kids just can't get enough of those stories. I hope these stories can help so many kids feel confident and excited when they walk into the world.

As for me? While I still feel a little nervous to begin an adventure up a big mountain or across a frozen river, I feel I have more courage than I did as a kid. I now have a lot of role models to help me.

6 . People spend too much time and effort trying to control anxiety these days. Here are some things you can do to help minimize anxiety’s negative effects.

1     If you treat anxiety as part of life and part of everyone’s living experience, you can learn to relate it with self-compassion and even with humor. This is a cornerstone of acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), which has been gaining clinical validation.

ACT guides people to see their unpleasant emotions as just feelings and accept that parts of life are hard. Doctors encourage patients to begin a dialogue with anxious thoughts.     2     Meanwhile, they also keep in mind patients’ personal goals and values. Although anxious thoughts shouldn’t be completely controlled, sufferers can be trained not to allow anxiety to turn them away from what they want to do and who they want to be.

Make lifestyle adjustments.     3     This requires trial and error to get just right. While acceptance is the first and most important step, some lifestyle changes have been proved to take the edge off as well.

Work out regularly. When tiredness and stress leave you more exposed to anxiety, a well-balanced diet and adequate rest are helpful.     4     One research study shows that regular vigorous workouts reduce the likelihood of developing an anxiety disorder over the next five years by 25 percent.

As a specialist, Arthur also shares her experiences on the website, openly discussing her anxiety has transformed her relationship with it. “I’m learning to live in harmony, as much as possible, with this thing that is part of me,” she says. “It’s not always pleasant, but I accept it.     5

A.Accept it.
B.Develop a sense of humor.
C.I may be more anxious in the future.

8 . In 1983, Howard Gardner, a professor at Harvard, published Frames of Mind: The Theory of Multiple Intelligences. In the book, he presented one type of intelligence that everyone must develop if they want to be successful. That is emotional intelligence.

Emotional intelligence refers to the ability to identify and regulate your own emotions. It means having a deep understanding of yourself, knowing your own strengths and weaknesses, and handling reactions and emotions wisely. Emotional intelligence is critical for success in almost any field and it is especially important for high-stress environments, for example, when times are tough and when a person wants to quit or is fearful.

We all know highly emotional people. Rather than react wisely, they tend to let their emotions run their lives, often saying or doing something they may later regret. I’ve seen many people do this on social media, getting in arguments with loved ones over trivial stuff because they have different opinions. This inability to master the self leads to many struggles and heartaches for people.

Emotional intelligence does not mean being void (没有) of emotions. It means you know it is okay to be angry, just not out-of-control angry. You know it’s okay to feel hurt, but it is not okay to do something stupid in the name of revenge (报复). Many of us know people who are very intelligent, but allow their emotions to damage their lives.

Now, reflect on how you manage your emotions. Are you smart in the way you express what you’re feeling, especially when the pressure is on?

1. According to the passage, what is “emotional intelligence”?
2. How do highly emotional people deal with their emotions?
3. Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.
It’s important to keep your emotions under control, so when you get hurt, you should neither get angry nor do stupid things for revenge.
4. In your daily life, what can you do to better manage your emotions?

9 . Speaking of self-improvement, perhaps you want to become more productive, read more books, take regular exercise or learn something new.     1     Here we’ve put together this guide to help you.

Observe your emotional reactions.

Our emotions can often overwhelm (击败) us and make us behave in ways we’d rather not. The first step in dealing with your emotions is to recognize your current feelings.     2     You can sit for a few minutes each day and just observe how you feel.     3     However, learning to be with yourself without distractions is an essential part of meaningful self-development. You could be surprised by what you discover.

Develop a way to express your emotions.

Chris Martin, the singer-songwriter and frontman of the band Coldplay, once said, “You've got to express yourself in life, and it's better out than in. What you reveal, you heal.”

4     You can try art, music and sports. Or you can get a piece of paper and a pen and start a healthy outlet. A talk with your close friend, relative, or partner can also help you get peace of mind.

    5

Sometimes emotions can be overwhelming even if you undertake all other steps to manage them. In this case, the only left option is to find a therapist (治疗师). Many successful, respected people like J. K. Rowling, Emma Stone, and Michael Phelps all promote therapy’s benefits. Turning to these professionals is one of the best ways to improve yourself. These trained professionals can provide guidance and support when it comes to coping with your emotions.

A.Work with a licensed therapist.
B.Receive professional training as therapists.
C.This can feel incredibly uncomfortable at first.
D.There are so many ways to let out your emotions.
E.Remember you can’t manage what you don't know.
