2 . When people think about British music, for the most part they think about the 60s or 70s with the likes of The Beatles and The Rolling Stones or more modern artists like Adele or Ed Sheeran. However, stuck between these two ages was, in my opinion, British music’s best period. The 90s were an optimistic time for Britain and indeed Europe, with the economy recovering from the lows of the 80s and the Cold War ending.

One of the defining features of 90s music was the birth of “Britpop”. This was a style of pop music that aimed to promote “Britishness” and commonly featured electric guitars, drums and male singers. Britpop was the style used by world-famous bands such as Oasis, Blur, Pulp and Suede who became known as “The Big Four”. The summer of 1995 was dominated by the “Battle of Britpop” which was between Blur and Oasis for the number one spot. Eventually, Blur won the battle and Oasis settled for second.

However, the 90s weren’t only for the boys, with major female groups also finding fame, the most well-known of which were “the Spice Girls” who were extremely popular in Britain and around the world. Once again they promoted “Britishness” and had catchy melodies and lyrics, but they also started the “Girl Power” movement which helped empower girls and women worldwide. It isn’t too far to assume that without their music, many female singers and artists who we love today would not have had the confidence to pursue their dream.

British music may have had many great times, however the 90s are often overlooked. Although I was not alive to enjoy the music properly, the 90s had a huge impact on British culture that can be felt today and I feel that the decade should get the recognition it deserves!

1. What can we infer from the first paragraph?
A.The Cold War came to an end in the 80s.
B.Britain’s economy began to pick up in the 90s.
C.The Beatles represented the best British music.
D.Adele is better than Ed Sheeran in modern music.
2. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A.Britpop.B.Britishness.
C.The Big Four.D.Battle of Britpop.
3. What’s the most important influence of “the Spice Girls” according to the text?
A.Promoting “Britishness”.B.Empowering girls and women.
C.Creating catchy melodies.D.Finding fame for female groups.
4. The writer thinks the impact of the 90s music on British culture is ________.
A.underestimatedB.well-recognized
C.fairly evaluatedD.reasonably doubted

3 . It’s OK to say you’ve never heard of grime—unless you’re from the UK. That’s because this music was invented in the UK in the early 2000s.

To someone who’s not familiar with underground music culture, it’s easy to get confused between hip-hop and grime since they are both noisy. And many people didn’t bother to tell them apart, until earlier this month when grime stars like Stormzy an J Hus led this year’s Mobo— “music of black origin”—award nominations (提名) in the UK.

Just like UK electronic music and hip-hop, from which grime drew influence, it mostly reflects the thoughts of young people. But different from hip-hop, grime singers sing in dialects(方言) with strong accents, giving a special flavor to their songs.

Lady Leshurr, known as the“Grime Queen5% said that she once tried to hide her accent, as she didn’t want people to judge her. But one day, she realized that she didn’t need to change herself just to please others. And there’s no doubt that this is the most basic and important quality of grime music: be yourself.

Also different from the hip-hop culture, which usually focuses on being rich, grime singers pay more attention to social matters like the European refugee(难民) problem and the gap between the rich and poor.

Although still quite young, grime seems to be getting favored by more and more people. In 2016, the English grime artist Skepta won the Mercury Prize with his album Konnichiwa, beating big names like David Bowie and Radiohead. However, no matter whether grime is one day accepted by the mainstream music world or not, one thing is for sure: in grime, singers always stay true to themselves.

1. What do hip-hop and grime music have in common?
A.They are invented in the UK.
B.They make a lot of loud noise.
C.They challenge traditional cultures.
D.They are full of creative ideas.
2. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A.Electronic music.B.Hip-hop.
C.Grime music.D.Black music.
3. What can be learned about grime singers?
A.They care too much about themselves.
B.They refuse to be judged by others.
C.They tend to take social responsibility(责任).
D.They show strong independence.
4. What does Skepta’s success suggest?
A.Grime is gradually getting recognized.
B.Singers should not try to be themselves.
C.Grime has become mainstream music.
D.It is easy to win the Mercury Prize.

4 . What's your favorite type of music? Most people may prefer rock and roll, pop or jazz. These types are most publicized by television and the radio. Country music now would seem to mistakenly belong to the category of rock or pop. Publicity of this category started to drop only after the year 2000; however, it did have its peak years just before falling down.

What people may not know is that this type of music inspired(促成) rock and roll especially with one of the most important figures in music history-Elvis Presley-who is known as the 6/King of Rock and Roll". Elvis used to be very famous at a radio program which broadcast country music back in the late 1940- s. Country music is influenced by jazz and blues. Rock music is also influenced by jazz and blues so that they may even seem similar.

Nowadays, country music is closely related to pop music due to artists' preference and popular demand. Starting from the 1980's it slowly divided itself into New and Old Country Music. Legends like Johnny Cash began to slip away because the new understanding of country music actually contains pop and his music just doesn't fit the category. Fortunately, country music is still heavily promoted through websites and reviews.

Certain types of music nowadays are linked with different age groups. Classical for the people in the mid 19th century, pop in the 1920's, and then there's country music. All these types continue to grow and modernize while still appealing to certain age groups.   More modern country music compositions tend to become different in their own ways which makes it even harder to identify them as country music while they, again, remain appealing only to certain age groups. Active promoters of country music videos, however, seem to appeal to a large number of age groups especially those active in Australia, for as long as country music isn't mixed with other types, it will eventually regain its charm as music for all ages.

1. It can be learned from the first paragraph that country music____.
A.is most publicized by television and the radio
B.used to be liked by more people compared to jazz
C.has become less popular since the year 2000
D.should be included in the category of rock or pop
2. What is the relationship between rock music and country music?
A.Both types influenced the formation of rock and roll.
B.Presley turned pop music into country music.
C.They are both influenced by jazz and blues.
D.The use of the same instruments makes them sound similar.
3. Some legends of country music began to slip away because____.
A.their songs totally changed the style of country music
B.they began to work on pop music for more profits
C.there is no marketing space for country music anymore
D.they can't meet the popular demands on country music
4. The author seems to believe that____.
A.country music should keep its own style to attract more listeners
B.it's necessary for country music to be mixed with other types
C.only a certain age group of people will like country music in the future
D.common characteristics can be found in all modern music

5 . The summer before my dad died, we moved house. Up until that point, our family had our own space to spread out. Money was tight, so there was no television set, but we owned a turntable on which my dad’s records played constantly. Mostly, it played Bob Dylan. Tracks from The Basement Tapes and Desire became an important part of our new life. My brother and I, aged 8 and 10, climbed trees, built hideaways and learned the words of Clothes Line Saga. We would chant over the, lost in our own joy.

It was January when my dad left us forever because of the cancer. He was 36 going on 37 then, the same age as Dylan. Growing up, I remained a fan of the music, but I wasn’t obsessed with Dylan until one day in early 1995, my brother bought us both tickets to see him play at Brixton Academy. London felt like a long way to go. But finally seeing Dylan step out onto the stage brought a sudden rush of excitement.

I have seen Dylan a couple of times since. My brother is not around so much these days. But he was up for a visit recently.
