1 . A 12-year-old boy—Jordan Thomas was going on a fishing trip with his parents on August 16, 2005, When he was swimming in the water, a boating accident happened and made him lose his legs. But Jordan didn’t give up the hope of living. He even began to help many kids like him.

When Jordan was in hospital, he found that he was fortunate. His parents could buy prosthetics (假肢) for him. Different from him, many children with no legs lived a poor life. Their parents couldn’t buy prosthetics for them. “My parents are doctors. They gave me first aid in the accident. At the same time, I don’t have to worry about money. I am very thankful for the help of my family and friends around me,” said Jordan. Then he decided to do something to help others.

Jordan started the Jordan Thomas Foundation (基金会) when he was still in hospital. He believed that every kid should have a happy life. He raised (筹募) money to buy prosthetics for children under 18.

Now, many years after he started his foundation, more than 80 children can live a normal (正常的) life and follow their dreams. Bella was one of them. She lost her left leg in a car accident. With the help of Jordan’s foundation, the 11-year-old girl can now swim, play the piano and even ride a horse. “With the prosthetics from the Jordan Thomas Foundation, I can run so fast,” said Bella.

5 . Chen Yanzi, a young teacher, has spent almost all her time at a primary school in a village in Shanxi province in the past three years.

She spent three hours getting to the village. This is her first time from her hometown Jincheng to the countryside. Before leaving for the village, she was a little nervous about it because she knew nothing about it.

“I had never been there and I didn’t know what it was like. I didn’t know what my students would be like,” she said.

“However, when I walked into the classroom for the first time and saw the Chinese words ‘Welcome, Miss Chen’ written by students, I felt quite warm.”

She started with six students, all in different grades. She taught math and English, as well as music, art and physical education. She tried to understand the needs of each student.

At the beginning, when she started an English lesson for Grade 6, she found the students were too timid to speak up. So before she started the English class, she prepared some interesting activities to make the students more outgoing. After class, Chen shared information about health and daily life to help improve their ability (能力) to care for themselves. She also told them interesting stories about what was happening outside the village to help them learn about the country and the wider world.

“I will never regret (后悔) spending my early teaching years with children in the village,” she said. “I got a lot of love and happiness here. I found satisfaction here.”

The reason for it is a talk between the owner and a student from Zhejiang University. After learning that the students were buying oranges for an experiment (实验), the owner Chen Kai decided to give away these oranges for free.

“You are doing research for the country, and I will give you a box of oranges for free.” Said Chen Kai. The student from Zhejiang University was moved (被感动) by the man. And the thing, including the discussion with the owner, appeared on the Internet. Many students then knew this story and it became more and more famous.

Chen Kai is from Yongquan Town, Taizhou City. He has run an online shop to sell oranges for a long time. In Yongquan, it is general for every family to grow oranges. “They make their living by selling oranges. When the oranges are harvested (收成). I help my family pick and sell them.” Chen Kai said. After being popular, he helped others in his town to sell oranges. The fruit farmer, Chen Kai supports (支持) the experiment because he deeply loves our country in his mind. People buy his oranges without thinking twice.
