1 . Kaitlin Riffel’s dream to end poverty (贫困) started when she was visiting her father, who worked for the homeless.
“I never realized there were people in the world who didn’t have a home or food before,” said Kaitlin, who is now sixteen. “I knew there was something I had to do about that.”
At age eight, she started raising money to build a playground. “It took me two years,” Kaitlin said. “We started small. We wanted to do something to make a difference.”
In 2014, when Kaitlin was thirteen, she visited Central America, and saw people going hungry and families living in houses made of cardboard. That year, she founded Kids on a Mission, which has helped hundreds of people there.
“The rooms were smaller than my bedroom, but there would be eight people living in each one,” Kaitlin said. “We also got to see the dirty rivers that those people were drinking out of.”
Providing clean drinking water, food and clothes for people living in poverty is now an important task for Kids on a Mission. “This young lady is changing the hearts of people, and also changing the world.” said the headmaster of Kaitlin’s school.

Last August, Chongqing had a very hard time. It experienced a record-breaking heat and the highest temperatures on most days were above 40℃. Because of the awfully hot and dry weather, large forest fires happened in many parts of the city.
Firefighters made great efforts to bring the fires under control, but they were not the only heroes. In Beibei District, a large number of motorcyclists (摩托车手) played an important role and won widespread praise.
Li Xin is the owner of a motorcycle club in Beibei District. After hearing the government’s call for volunteers, he organized a team of 15 club members to support the firefighting in Xiema Town, the center of the local fires. It is my honor and duty to guard my hometown,” he said.
The team members took turns using nine motorcycles to carry food, water and whatever firefighters needed to deal with the fire. They also helped transport people to certain places.
There were hundreds of motorcyclists like Li. Most of them were in their twenties. They rode on the poor mountain roads, each carrying a large basket full of supplies on their back. Some fell and got hurt even though they had the best motorcycle skills. Some got heatstroke (中暑) after working long hours continuously. They didn’t have much time for sleep, but they were in high spirits at all times.
Besides riding on the difficult roads, the motorcyclists also helped cut wood and put out fires. They stayed and helped till the fires were finally put out.

One day it was raining heavily. I was late for a meeting in a nearby city that I knew only by GPS, and my phone died. I couldn’t find out how to get there or how to reach my friends.
I stopped at a McDonald’s and walked up to a mother and her daughter. “I’m sorry,” I said. “Do you mind if I make a call with your phone? I need to let my friends know I’m lost.” The mother handed me her phone and then told me I was lucky to make the last call-she was about to turn it off because she didn’t have enough money to pay her phone bill.
The young girl and the mother were holding each other and talking together as I made the call I got in touch with my friends. They, thankfully, knew where I was and told me how to get to them.
As I was leaving, I reached into my wallet. Luckily, there was a $20 bill. I put it into the mother’s hand and then turned to leave quickly. As I walked through the doors, I heard the mother crying. Her daughter called after me and said, “You have no idea how you just helped us.”
I still think back to that day even now. They had no idea how much they helped me, yet I was the one being thanked. It’s funny how that works.

But Bryan wanted no money. He was just giving a hand to someone in trouble. This was normal for him. He said,“ If you really want to repay me, next time you see someone in need, help them and think of me.”
After saying goodbye, the lady continued down the road until she reached a small cafe where she decided to stop for something to eat. As the pretty waitress took her order, the lady noticed she was nearly eight months pregnant (怀孕的). Although the waitress looked tired she was very kind. As the lady was going to pay the $10 bill she remembered Bryan’s words.

8 . Have you ever gotten stung(蛰)by a bee? Well, for 18-year-old Mikaila Ulmer from the US, her first bee sting at the age of 4 was a special experience. It let her make a difference and turned her into an entrepreneur.
The bee sting scared Mikaila but it also made her interested in the insect. She soon learned how important bees are for the planet and how they are at risk(风险)of dying out.
At not even 5 years old Mikaila wanted to do something to help save the bees. With her parents’ help, she set up a lemonade stand in her front yard. She used grandmother’s homemade lemonade recipe(食谱)and added a little bit of honey(蜂蜜)to it. The money from every lemonade she sold went to bee protection groups.

In 2020, Mikaila brought out a book about her experience as an entrepreneur called Bee Fearless, Dream Like-a-Kid. She said “it’s important to dream like a kid, and as a kid, it’s the perfect age to start to realize what you enjoy and trying new things and taking risks.”

9 . In 1998, Wang Chengbang retired(退休)from the army. Instead of enjoying a relaxing life, he volunteered to save the soil from desertification(沙漠化)by planting trees in Korla(库尔勒), Xinjiang.
It is not an easy job. The high temperature in Korla makes it difficult for anyone to work day after day in the sunshine. Besides, lacking of water is a big problem. Actually, Wang Chengbang’s work in the first few years failed as very few trees survived(存活).
But Wang Chengbang would not give up. “After trying many different ways, I have learned how to grow young trees in a better way,” said Wang Chengbang. He also worked out new ways to save water. With his hard work, more and more trees have survived. So far, he has planted more than 1.5 million trees. Those green trees prevent desertification, make the air cleaner and protect people from the hot sun. Now, Korla is a model city in environmental protection.
Wang Chengbang is also successful in fighting cancer(癌症). In 2005, he had cancer and was told that he had only six months to live.
