1 . ①As the saying goes, “Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime.” This is the way the charity organization Heifer International (国际小母牛慈善组织) wants to end world hunger.
②It began in the 1930s when an American farmer, Dan West, went to Spain to help people in need. He tried to feed the people with milk. But it seemed that there would never be enough milk. It made him think that what they needed was “not a cup, but a cow”.
③Dan West returned to America. He worked together with some friends to find ways to end hunger. He believed giving animals and providing training would stop world hunger. With his help, Heifer International was set up.
④On Heifer International’s website, you will see a list of animals like cows, chickens, pigs and even fish and bees. You can offer help by buying some animals for one certain family. Those animals will have babies get better lives, and they will pass on the act of kindness to others. More importantly, you are buying the resources (资源) for programs run by Heifer International to help more families.
⑤The programs also help small-sized farms. As a rule, each farmer must give his animal’s first female (雌性) baby to another in need. Heifer International also provides training on animals’ health and feeding. And these farmers all agree to teach others what they have learned as another rule.
⑥However, there is still a long way to go. The milk may run out. But if families have their own cows, they can get plenty of milk to feed themselves. The organization wants the farmers to go on working together, helping each other and learning from each other. Maybe hunger can really be stopped.

Having a month off from her job, 24-year-old Stefani Shamrowicz from America decided to take a trip to help clean up the environment. She drove across the country and spent 23 days picking up126 bags of trash (垃圾).
Stefani collected anywhere from one to sixteen bags at a time. She once became discouraged (气馁的) when she felt she wasn’t doing enough. “There was a place that had an ocean of trash and pushed out four bags. But then I broke down because it felt like four bags didn’t do anything,” said Stefani. But she continued to just do what she could. Her monumental (值得纪念的) day was the sixteenth day because she collected 100 bags in total in Ohio.
Stefani shared what she did online and a lot of people got interested. They donated (捐赠) $10 a bag for Stefani to clean up in their names. The person’s name was written on a bag and when the bag was filled, Stefani posted a picture on her Instagram, thanking the person for helping clean up the city she was in. Some people even cleaned up the city in person and sent Stefani pictures of bags of trash they picked up. And once when Stefani was walking on the beach in Florida, and she started doing a bag, two women saw her and started helping her fill the bag. This surprised Stefani a lot.
Now Stefani is back home and returns to work. But she has so many good things to say about her special road trip. “There is trash everywhere, so I’m just happy to be able to make a difference everywhere I go,” she said.
1. What did Stefani decide to do during her one-month holiday?2. How many bags of trash did she collect most at a time?
3. How were other people influenced by Stefani? (give one example)
4. What do you usually do to protect the environment? Write 30 words or more.
The Library With No Rules
When you walk by Eric’s home on Balgis Street, downtown Bangkok (曼谷), you will see thousands of books on shelves and on the stairs. Each book is free to anyone who wants it.
“People can borrow, take home, bring back or keep,” says Eric. “Or they can share and pass on to another. But they should just take, take!” He thinks books need to live, and they’re only alive if they are being read. “The act of giving books makes your life meaningful,” says Eric.
The Reading Club 2000, as the project shows, began more than twenty years ago. “My parents gave me my love of reading,” he says. “I started the club to honour them and to do some kind of community service. So I put my old books and my brothers’ and sisters’, maybe 100 in all—outside, to see if anyone was interested.”
It took a while for people to work out this was a library. It never closed and there were no rules. But the project, offering everything from paperbacks to fashion magazines, technical books and school textbooks, is becoming popular.
The success of the project is helped by the fact that the country, with a small population, has fewer than 700 public libraries, and many people cannot afford to buy books. Luckily, the project is spreading. Eric takes boxes of books into Bangkok community himself. He has also helped friends set up similar projects in ten other places around the country, and encouraged students to donate books.
1. What is Eric’s opinion about books?2. Why did Eric start the Reading Club 2000?
3. What was special about Eric’s library?
4. What do you think of the Reading Club 2000? Why do you think so? Please list at least two reasons. (Write 30 words or more.)
It was a Saturday morning when the newspaper first reported the coming whales. A group of animals were swimming close to the beach in James’ hometown. All the local people rushed out to the beach to see them. They were expecting a beautiful show, better than a movie.
Then one whale perhaps lost its direction, directly towards land. It came in with the waves, but when the waves moved back, its huge body was left on the sand. Suddenly, James and his family and all the others were no longer sightseers. They had to become rescuers (救援人员). A few people ran towards the animal. They pushed and tried to force the whale back into the water, but it was no use.
An animal rescue service team soon arrived in a truck with heavy lifting machines, to help move the animal. James and his family couldn’t do much on the beach, so James went back to his home and made sandwiches and hot tea for the rescuers. At least, James thought, he could help in some way.
Back at the beach, it was getting dark. Some people lined up their cars along the beach and shined the headlights on the sand. The rescuers would not give up. After trying many times, they were finally able to lift the whale into the water. Everyone cheered when it headed back to the sea. It swam out about a mile and then disappeared for a moment under the sea. Then, in what looked like a jump of joy, it rose high above the water a thank-you to those who had worked so hard to save its life.

8 . ①“Volunteering (做志愿工作) can make a real difference to the world. It makes you look at the world differently. You see how little things can change a person’s life for the better, which makes everyone a better person.” Mason, a volunteer said.
②National Volunteer Week started in 1974 and is held every April. It is a time to thank volunteers for their achievements. It is also a perfect opportunity (机会) to encourage others to take their first step toward becoming a volunteer. Making the decision to take the first step can be the biggest problem, because they often wonder if they will be able to meet the organization’s expectations (期望). Some people fear not knowing anyone else in the group. Not having enough time also stops some from sharing their abilities. The following tips can help if you have some of these worries.
③Start out slowly, don’t add too much pressure (压力). Even a few hours a month can make a big difference in someone’s life.
④Choose an organization (组织) with the same interests and common values.
⑤Take part in a training meeting for new volunteers, even if it is not asked.
⑥Work with a experienced volunteer. He volunteered a lot, he can help you increase the confidence and completely understand the organization’s expectations.
⑦Invite a friend or family member to serve. It is a good experience to volunteer with them.
⑧Finally, it is most important to enjoy the volunteer experience and to remember that not all volunteer experiences are perfect. If one experience doesn’t work, don’t give up and you’ll surely find the right opportunity.
⑨Spend some time on volunteer work and you will see great changes in people’s lives. As Mason discovered during his volunteer experience, “...little things can change a person’s life.”
