73-year-old Yang Weiyun doesn’t sing, dance or sell things on Douyin (抖音). She teaches pinyin (拼音). And many of her students are adults (成年人).
Yang worked as a Chinese teacher in a primary school for 30 years. Later, she went to work in a kindergarten (幼儿园) and she worked, there for 20 years. About 4 years ago, she left the kindergarten. However, she still wanted to do something meaningful. So in May 2021, she began to teach kindergarten kids pinyin on Douyin.
However, she found that many of her students online were adults. Because they are illiterate (不识字) they feel inferior. They feel they are not as good as the others. They are afraid to go to new places and worried that they can’t teach their children. So Yang added special classes to meet their needs.
There are over 37,000,000 illiterate (文盲) adults in our country. Yang offers an easy and private (私人的) way for them to learn to read and write. Now she has nearly 300,000 students online.
Zhang Mei is one of Yang’s students. She grew up in the countryside and had never been to school. She moved to the city years ago. However, illiteracy made her life very hard. She couldn’t find a job. After taking Yang’s classes, she can read pinyin and knows how to write her name. She has also found a job.
Giving classes online is not an easy thing for Yang, but she tries her best to make her students learn in an easy and interesting way.

6 . In life, many people are always ready to help others and they ask for nothing in return. We call those people volunteers. But why do they do that? Read on.
Volunteering is good for your resume (简历). Your experience of being a volunteer gives the interviewer a clearer picture of who you are. According to a survey, 1 out of 5 interviewers in the US agreed that volunteer experience was an important reason for giving someone a job.
Being a volunteer sets a good example for others. By volunteering, you encourage (鼓励) others to make good changes. Serving food at a food bank and working with teenagers in an after-school activity are also great examples to make others love volunteering.
Meeting people who have similar interests and ideas becomes easy. The way someone chooses to spend his or her free time shows the person’s values (价值观). Sharing the same values while helping others is a great way to make new friends. By volunteering, you will have more friends in a short time.
“Doing good” is important. Every day we may watch or hear sad news and stories. However, volunteering is a good way to make the world a better place. Even a simple thing can make a difference. If we all join together, those simple things can add up to a big change!
Volunteering is never difficult. There is always a group for you. To find the right group to join, you just need to use the Internet.

10 . Marta is interviewing a volunteer. Haru, at the meeting.
Marta: What kind of volunteer job do you have?Haru: I work at a nature museum. I teach children’s groups about animals, birds and plants. Last month, I helped some students write a report about the birds they didn’t know.
Marta: That’s interesting. Where did you hear about this job?
Haru: I found it through United We Serve. It’s a way for us to volunteer in our own communities. There’s a great website for volunteers. www.serve.gov.
Marta: Is it just for young people?
Haru: No, it isn’t. There are chances for everyone!
Marta: I have an idea for a volunteer project. What should I do?
Haru: Before you start, you should put your idea on the site and ask for volunteers. Many people are volunteering these days. And more people are going to volunteer in the future.
