Once a young man was asked to paint a boat of a rich man. He got some paint and brushes and began to paint the boat. While painting, he discovered a tiny hole in the ship’s hull (船体) and quietly fixed it. After finishing his work, the young man got paid and left.
The boat’s owner showed up at the young man’s house the next day with a substantial check (大额支票), far greater than the painting payment.
“You’ve already given me money for painting the boat, sir.” said the surprised young man.
“This isn’t for the paint job; it’s for repairing the hole,” said the rich man.
“But it was such a little service.” said the young man.
“My dear boy, I forgot the hole when I asked you to paint the boat. After you finished painting it, my kids took the boat and went on a fishing trip. Then, suddenly I remembered the hole and tried to contact (联络) my kids, but I couldn’t reach them. I was scared to death. Imagine how thankful I was when I saw them return home safely. After that, I checked the boat carefully then discovered that you had repaired the hole. You protected my children’s lives,” said the rich man.

②Last year, I got to know a group of autistic (患自闭症的) children. We called them “the Snails”. It was hard to communicate with them at first, because they wouldn’t like to. After a two-week training course, I became more skilled and got closer to them day by day. I also received much pleasure when playing with them. What’s more, I found that every one of “the Snails” had his or her own talent. And their colorful pictures on the wall caught my special attention, though it was difficult to tell what they were trying to express.
③Deeply moved by their pictures, I decided to hold a charity(慈善) sale. We walked on the busy street, selling their creative pictures. 60 pictures were sold that day. People thought their pictures were full of imagination.
④Back to the question about how to become a better person, I think I’m lucky enough to get my own answer.

In February, 2022, COVID-19 started suddenly in my city. It was so serious that people were suggested to stay indoors. We had to buy food and other everyday products online. However, some old people, especially those living alone, didn’t know how to use the smart phones, so they had difficulties getting food.
One day, in the community WeChat group, an old man said that he was short of vegetables, so I had an idea of setting up a food bank in the community, and my neighbors were also ready to offer help.
To keep social distancing (社交距离), I used a large box as the food bank, and put it in the public area. Neighbors could give away and get some food there. The large box was quickly filled with vegetables, rice and snacks.
One evening, I saw a bag of vegetables with a note saying “These are fresh vegetables. Please take them home if you need.”
In the WeChat group, an old lady who got the vegetables said, “I was so moved by the good-will, but I only took three tomatoes, because I wanted to leave the rest for those people really in need.”
There were many similar stories in my city during those days. Although COVID-19 keeps us apart, we can get through the hard times as long as we pull together (齐心协力).

3. Where did the writer put the large box?

6 . It was a fine summer afternoon and Sam was going home from school. He walked along the road slowly, reading a book. Sam had spent all his money on the book. He liked it very much. When he came to the high road, there was a blind (盲的) man, holding out his hat. The poor man said, “I haven’t eaten anything since yesterday. Please give me some money. I want to buy some bread.” But Sam had nothing to give. So, he just walked on, feeling very sad.
Soon after, a fine carriage (马车) came up, and in it were Harry and his mother. The blind man still stood there and held out his hat. “Let us give the poor man something,” said Harry to his mom. His mother found some coins (硬币) in her bag and passed them to him. However, Harry did not put them into the man’s hat. He threw them into the bush (灌木丛) beside the poor man. How could the blind man find them?
As Sam turned back to look at the fine carriage, he saw Harry throwing the coins into the bush. So he walked back at once and helped look for the money until he found all the coins.
As the blind man held the coins, he smiled. It touched Sam’s heart. At that moment, Sam knew that kindness wasn’t always about big actions. Sometimes, it was the simple (简单的) act of giving a helping hand that could make a difference.

7 . ①According to a research, more than 130 billion pounds of uneaten food go to waste in Laura’s country each year. That is about 30% of the yearly food supply (供应). It is a sad fact, especially when you consider how many families and homeless people are in hunger.
②When Laura saw her school dining hall throw away food that was not eaten at all every day, she came up with an idea. She started a project to help her school dining hall to give away uneaten food to homeless shelters (庇护所) in her community. In the past three years, the same project has spread to other schools and some fast food restaurants throughout the city. The project is called Feed & Find, and has already fed thousands of people in her city. How does it work? Through an app, Feed & Find matches local homeless shelters with school dining halls and restaurants that have uneaten food to provide. When dining halls or restaurants have uneaten food left, they can use the app to share the information about the food. A truck driver working for the project is then sent to pick it up and take it to a shelter.
③Pretty cool, right? It’s not surprising that people in other cities have got in touch with Laura, hoping that she could help develop similar projects for their communities.
④Some people, however, have concerns about the safety of the uneaten food. They think such food may not be clean enough. Still, this project is a clever way to help solve the problem of food waste and it helps those in need.

We hope (希望) every student in the world can have school things. So, we decide (决定) to help them. The next day, all the students in our class bring their school things to the classroom.
Cathy brings (带来) her pencil box. It is pink, her favourite colour. It is a birthday gift from her aunt. She likes it so much, but she wants to give it to the poor (贫穷的) kids in Africa.
