2 . Bags of Love
Last year, I worked in a middle school near my mother’s house, and I stayed with her for a month. During that time, I helped her do some housework and buy some food.
After the first week, I noticed that the food was eaten up (吃光) very quickly. Then I began keeping an eye on my mum. To my surprise, I found that she would put some of the food into a paper bag and go out with it at about nine every morning. And finally, I decided to follow her. I saw her taking the food to the street children. She would also spend a lot of time talking and playing with them.
One day, I talked to a neighbour and found out that my mum was famous in the area. The children were very friendly with her and even thought of her as their own mother. Then it hit me—why wouldn’t she want to tell me about it? Was she worried that I would stop buying food if I found out?
When my mum got home, I gave her a big hug (拥抱) . I told her she didn’t need to keep it a secret from me. And she told me something about the children. Some of them lived with an old lady in a small house. Others slept on the street. For years, she was helping the poor street children by giving them food. After she told me everything, I was so moved by how selfless (无私的) she was. She helped others in need. As her son, I was so proud of my mum.
I continued (继续) to buy food for my mum after that. But I always added (增加) one more bag for her other children.

4 . During the European colonization (殖民) of North America, many native languages were given up. As a result, many children were stopped from using their own languages. Today, there are about 180,000 Inuit people in the world and fewer than 40,000 can speak Inuktitut, one of the dialects (方言) spoken by the Inuit.
There are about 65,000 Inuit living in Canada. Miali is a 40-year-old student at University of Calgary who is majoring in (主修) International Indigenous (本地的) Studies. She has spent much of her life fighting for Indigenous rights. As one of the few people who still speak Inuktitut, she shows great interest in spreading the language to keep it from dying out completely.
Asking why this is important is just like asking why water is important, said Miali. “We need it, and there’s an innate (天生的) need inside us searching for a part of ourselves we can identify with (认同). I want to give people their language, and allow them to understand something they’ve been searching for.”
Miali has been teaching others in Inuktitut for 10 years now. She dreamed of taking her task even further, so in 2021, she started an online course to teach the language to anyone who wants to learn it, no matter where they live. She offers the course through her business, Allurvik, which also sells a variety of Inuit-made products and services. She even makes videos in both English and Inuktitut.
Miali believes that speaking their native languages helps them connect to their ancestors and land. This connection is grown in their culture helping them understand who they are and how they fit into their communities. She’s pleased to be able to use technology to bring her language to anyone in the world.
“Many people want to learn Inuktitut but don’t have the supports in place,” she said. “All I want to do is to make Inuktitut a little more available, especially to the Inuit people who want to learn and anyone else who’s interested in it. I hope my work also encourages others to make Indigenous languages more widely available.”
1. Why does Miali try her best to spread Inuktitut?A.Because there are many Inuit in the world. |
B.Because she wants to stop it from disappearing |
C.Because she wants Inuktitut to be popular in the world. |
D.Because she wants more Inuit people to speak their own language. |

Tilly, a ten-year-old girl, saved about one hundred other visitors in 2004 in a tsunami, a huge ocean wave. She knew what was happening because she learnt about underwater earthquakes (地震) at school only a few weeks’ earlier, a newspaper reported.
“I was on the beach and the water started to go funny,” Tilly told the reporter from the newspaper. “There were bubbles (气泡) and the water went back suddenly. I knew there was going to be a tsunami (海啸). I told Mum,” she said.
Tilly’s mother and the hotel workers acted quickly. They cleared people from the beach just minutes before a huge wave reached the land. Luckily, no one died.
Tilly’s teacher was very proud of her. “She’s a very clever girl. It is very lucky that we learnt about this kind of tsunami in our science class just two weeks before Christmas,” he told the newspaper.

Jenny and her brother Kim were students of Sunshine Middle School. They learnt that they should care about (关心) others in the school. This gave them a great idea! “Let’s start a club at school. We can call it the Care Club!” said Kim. Jenny liked the idea very much. Every evening, they planned what they would do the next day to show love to others.
One day, they helped a boy with his homework after school. Another day, they stayed after school to help a little girl learn English.
Later, the other students in the school started to join the club. So Kim and Jenny opened the club up to new members. They often gathered (聚集) together after they finished their homework. They had meetings every week and planned who they would help and what they would do.

9 . It was a beautiful late August morning. I sat on a bench across the street from the Beverly Public Library. With my notebook in hand, I began writing my love letter to the library.
We had dropped off our daughter, Natasha, at college yesterday. And our son, Rory, had graduated from college last May. They both do really well in their studies. They deserve most of the credit (称赞), but some of it must go to the Beverly Public Library.
When they were just babies, Rory and Natasha would crawl (爬行) around the Children’s Library in the Beverly Public Library. In the afternoons, they would go to Story Hour and make crafts in the craft room.
As days passed, we became very close to the librarians. We would even take part in their retirement farewell parties (退休欢送会). One of these was for our dear friend and children’s librarian, Nancy Bonne.
I remembered when Rory entered high school, he got a part-time job at the Children’s Library. His job was to check out books and prepare crafts. He worked with the same librarians who had once read to him during Story Hour. His experiences in the library not only helped him get into college, but also helped him pay for it.
I finished writing my love letter to the Beverly Public Library and placed my notebook back in my bag. When I stood up from the bench, a young mother and her child walked by. The child looked up to me and said, “I’m going to the library.”
