1 . A team of senior women in Southwest China’s Chongqing serving as “shared-grandmas” to help working parents pick up their children from school, stay with the kids and help their homework, has received a lot of likes and comments online lately.
The team of “shared-grandmas” from the Shipingcun community in Chongqing’s Jiulongpo District is made up of 9 female retirees (退休者), mostly empty-nesters. They take on the duties as volunteers taking care of 25 pupils in the community. The program started in April and the size of the team is still increasing.

Every workday, she picks up the children from school, and stays with them while they finish their homework and play in the community room until their parents pick them up. “I feel young with the kids and my retire life’s meaningful,” she smiled.
The retired senior women in the community are encouraged to take part in this public service. The feeling of achievement and happiness means a lot to “shared-grandmas”.

7 . In our daily lives, we are often so shy that we can’t deal with the situation that we are not used to. But what if something unusual or unexpected happens? That’s what I experienced one evening in April 2023 on my way home from work.
As I was riding my bike home in the evening, I saw a big dirty dog with orange and white fur. It looked sad and lost, simply sitting in the middle of the road by a pedestrian crossing (人行横道). It seemed unsure of what to do as it lay down and stared at the passing traffic. Nobody seemed to notice the dog either, only passing him by at a distance.
At first, I also crossed over to the other side, hoping that somebody else would care for the dog. But, realizing that the dog might suddenly get up and walk into traffic, I decided to do something to help the dog.
When the light changed, I saw my chance. I used my bike to guide the dog to a street corner to keep it safe from passing cars. Slowly but surely, I was able to encourage the dog to keep walking until finally, we both got to the street corner. I messaged a dog shelter group to let them know about where the dog is. Yet, by the time I turned to it again, the dog was gone.
Sometimes we don’t know what we will find or see in our daily lives. Still, what matters is how we deal with them. Although I am shy in these situations, I am glad I found the courage to help a dog in need, even if just for a moment.

One year before, at age 18, Leszyeski had aged out of foster care (寄养中心), having been in the system since she was four when her single mother was no longer able to care for her. Leszyeski was now enrolled in college, hoping to become a doctor. And the only furniture she had in her apartment was an air mattress with a hole in it.
Then she learned about an organization Chairity. The organization provides furniture and household goods for young adults who have left foster care. Leszyeski reached out to Chairity, a nonprofit formed by 23-year-old Maria Paparella.
Paparella first became aware of foster care in elementary school when her parents were considering adopting a child. The plan didn’t work out, but Paparella often found herself thinking about that child. “I’m really close with my family, and I just couldn’t imagine being completely on my own at 18,” she says.
At 16, Paparella visited Summit County Children Services, with a list of questions, trying to understand what aging out looked like. One of her questions was “What’s not being met for these young people?” Near the top of the list was furniture. “That struck home,” says Paparella. The idea of “moving into an apartment without a bed to sleep on or a so fa to sit on” pulled at her heartstrings.
Paparella contacted her parents’ friends, asking if they had spare furniture to donate. A local furniture store offered free ware-house space and its delivery truck. Watching the recipients’ (接受者) faces when they received a bed or a couch was amazing. Paparella remembers delivering a golden lamp to a woman and watching her polish it lovingly, getting rid of dirt and fingerprints.
Today, Chairity has given furniture to nearly 200 young adults in homes across six Ohio counties. Paparella is sure these contributions give the recipients hope and confidence. Leszyeski agrees. “It makes me feel like I’m not different from other people. My whole life, I’ve felt abnormal,” she says, “Now, I feel normal.”
1. When did Leszyeski enter the foster care system?2. What does Leszyeski hope to be in the future?
3. What does Chairity provide for young people?
4. What did Paparella try to understand when she visited Summit County Services at 16?
5. What does Leszyeski think of Chairity?
