March 5th is Lei Feng Day. Every year, many people do volunteer activities (志愿者活动) like Lei Feng. Wang Guansheng is one of them.
35-year-old Wang is from Dalian. In March this year, he was busy every day. He taught some farmers’ children to write and gave poor people some things they needed. But he never felt tired of helping others.
In 1999, Wang was a village student. One day, some young men went to his school and gave money to poor students. When Wang got 200 yuan, he was so happy. His teacher told him they were volunteers. They did that because Lei Feng’s spirit (精神) moved them. “At that time, I told myself that I would be like them and help others when I grew up,” Wang said.
On March 5th, 2011, Wang set up a service (服务) center. Now there are about 5,100 volunteers in the center. Wang often does volunteer activities with them. “I hope to call on more people to help others,” he said.

4 . It was March 2022. I was finishing off high school. While I was looking forward to my college years, I also felt a strong wish to volunteer abroad. So I took a gap year (间隔年) and went to volunteer in South Africa.
I took part in the Child Care Project. We worked in a foster care home and spent time with a group of orphans (孤儿) between the ages of 0 and 3. There was nothing as exciting as seeing a baby taking her first steps, hearing a two-year-old girl repeat all of the letters in the alphabet after I said them, seeing a little boy kick or catch balls of different sizes, and watching all of the kids carefully wash their hands as it became a habit. These were the skills that I watched the children develop during my time there. My heart was filled with pride. I also took part in the Teaching Project and worked in a preschool. Teaching was more tiring. Some children were naughty. They didn’t always listen to me. But it’s hard to describe the joy I felt when the kids finally understood what I was trying to teach them.
Volunteering in South Africa changed my life. It changed who I am as a person. I cannot be more thankful for this amazing experience.

5 . Jordyn Perez was about to turn 8 years old when her mom suggested a new way to celebrate her birthday. “What would you think about donating your gifts to a children’s hospital?” her mom said. At first, Jordyn wasn’t sure. Then she gave it some thought. “I was like, ‘Okay,’” Jordyn said, “I already had everything. In needed and these kids that were going through things at the hospital—they needed it more than I did.”
“Just to see these kids’ little faces when Jordyn hands them the gifts at the hospital, that’s always been our favorite part,” says Jordyn’s mother. “Seeing these kids’ reactions just touches our hearts.” Kids can be in the hospital for lots of reasons, asthma, a condition that affects breathing. Whatever the patient’s ailment is, a hospital stay can be stressful. Efforts like Jordyn’s are a bright spot during a difficult time.
Since that time, it has kicked off each year in early November, five or six weeks before her birthday. Along with an invitation to her party, gifts might include building blocks or toy trains. “And for the teenagers, my age or older,” it might be music player or books.”
Natalie Gutierrez works in the public relations office at Baptist Children’s Hospital. She has seen first-hand the effect of Jordyn’s gift-giving. “She puts smiles on the faces of these little patients in our hospital and on our nurses and staff, ”Gutierrez says. Jordyn’s efforts to help kids in the hospital have inspired others to follow in her footsteps. Do you know that when you’re kind to others, it’s good for your own happiness too? Even small acts of kindness can make you more confident and help you feel more connected to the people around you.
Kindness means doing something thoughtful and generous for others without thinking anything in return. It could be a small, simple act, like holding open a door, or something that takes time and effort, like making a playlist for your friend. Kindness isn’t just something you do. It also means thinking about others’ feelings, as well as your own.
Start with something simple and easy, like sending a message to a friend you haven’t spoken to for a while. Try to do something you enjoy, while remembering that you are doing it for others, and see if you can turn kindness into a habit.
B. How to show our kindness?
C How is kindness good for you?
D. Don’t forget to show kindness to yourself too.
E. If you treat others kindly, they may pass on the kindness.
