Can you remember a time when somebody was kind to you? Maybe a person asked you     1     (stand) in front of him or her in a line. Or maybe a stranger helped you in a much     2     (friendly) way. There are lots of ways to show kindness.

Why should I be kind?

Most people would agree that a kind action is good for both the receiver     3     the person who does the action.

What are random (随机的) acts of kindness?

Many     4     (group) try to let people do kind acts wherever and whenever they can.     5     idea behind it is that it doesn’t take any plan to be kind, just a little bit of effort.

How can I be kind?

There are many ways to show kindness. They     6     (main) fall into three types. The first type is interpersonal (人与人之间的) kindness,     7     example, giving away clothes to charities. The second is environmental kindness. It can mean recycling (回收) something or organizing a group activity to clean a park. The third is personal kindness. What is World Kindness Day?

It is held on November 13th every year. It calls on people to improve their relationships with others through kind acts. People celebrate it by     9     (be) kind and having much fun.

When people get older, it becomes harder to do many things, from walking to the store to doing the housework. Old people living alone can also feel lonely. As a volunteer, you can do a lot to help the old in your neighborhood. You could visit them and help them with their housework.

Many people with disabilities need help. You could volunteer to read books to the blind or deliver something to people who can’t get around too well.

There is lots of voluntary work to do in hospitals and health care centers. As a volunteer, you can make the bed, deliver flowers and gifts, help serve meals, and do lots of other important jobs.

Some families don’t have enough money to buy food and clothes for their kids. Some people don’t have places to live at all. To help these people as a volunteer, you can give clothes, food or money to them, or raise money for a charity.

Sometimes people need more help when the holidays come. Holidays are happy, but for people who are alone or unlucky, they can be a lonely, hard time. As a volunteer, you can deliver holiday dinners to less lucky people, visit the lonely old people and serve food to the homeless.

7 . Volunteering is fun and rewarding (有益的), but if you want to be a good volunteer, you need to learn more.     1    

◆Be well-trained. Know what you’re doing as a volunteer. If you need to learn about your job,     2     If you’re good at your job, it will be easier to help others.

Ye Meina, a middle school student in Harbin,     1     (join) a teen volunteer group last year. The group do helpful things     2     sweeping the streets, taking care of the blind and the deaf. People in China remember the spirit of Lei Feng, but what is it? Sun Maofang is one of famous Lei Feng     7     (model) in China, and be has been helping others for several decades. “Always getting ready to care for others is     8     important part of the spirit. It is never out of date,” Sun said. “Also, you could even learn from Lei Feng by     9     (do) small things, such as loving your parents more, trying to help your friend     10     his study as you can.”

10 . Can one paper bag change the world? Sarah Murphy believes it can and she tries to do something about it.

The seventh grader from the United States, decorates (装饰) lunch bags for the homeless.

She wants to bring hope to those people. She fills each bag with a lunch and gives them away to homeless people in the town, through a charity program.

Sarah Murphy has a great interest in charity. She used to donate money to charities at her school. Then she heard about the charity program from her friends. So she wanted to do something special, too.

To attract the help of more children, she reached out to a local library and made a program. They set up a coloring station in the library. Children may take a bag, draw and write a message of hope. They can leave it on the front desk. They can also take it home and return it after coloring.

In the past three months, Sarah Murphy has bought 100 brown lunch bags and put them in the library. Children at the library have colored them. She will happily buy more. She once joined a summer reading program with the theme “Build a Better World”. Sarah Murphy believes what she does could make a difference. She also believes that love and kindness would make the world a better place.
