1 . According to a new research this year, kids and teenagers who volunteer aren’t just helping their community. They might also be helping themselves. It is said that doing volunteering through school or community groups will do good to the health of kids and teens.
What the survey shows
Experts did a survey among the parents of about 50,000 kids aged 6 to 17 in the United States and found that kids who took part in community service were 34% more likely to be in very good physical health than those who didn’t. And those who volunteered were 66% more likely to be doing well in general. Kids aged 12 and older who volunteered were 2.5% less likely to have anxiety (焦虑) than those who didn’t.
What the result suggests
The result may have something useful to do with youth mental (精神的) health. In recent years, depression (抑郁) and anxiety are becoming more popular among young people. For example, more than 40% of high school students are reported experiencing feelings of sadness or hopelessness in 2023. One possible way to deal with this may be doing volunteering in the community.
Why volunteering works
Other researches have also found the connections between volunteering and well-being among kids and teenagers. Serving the community seems to help people feel a sense of purpose. In this way, they feel connected to those around them, and it makes them happier and healthier.
However, experts also point out that it’s not possible to say for sure that volunteering makes better mental and physical health. It could be that when kids and teenagers take part in volunteering work, they get out of themselves and relax for a while, which has some active influence to both the mental and physical health.

4 . Have you ever heard of a famous charity called Operation Smile? We hope we can help you understand how we are trying to help children all over the world.
Operation Smile was started by a doctor and his wife. In 1982, together with some volunteers, they went to Philippines to help children who had holes in their lips (嘴唇) or inside their mouths. It was very difficult for them to eat and drink. These volunteers worked very hard. But they worried that they could not carry on with the work because they have run out of money. Then they decided to start a charity so that they could help these needy children. They called it Operation Smile. Operation Smile works in more than twenty developing countries and has cured over 10000 children who have problems with their mouths. Operation Smile has won many prizes for its work. On the other hand, Operation Smile trains local doctors and nurses in developing countries so that they can continue to help children when Operation Smile has left.
As to the children with much more serious problems, they will send them to America for further treatment. So show your kindness and generosity (慷慨) to the needy children now. You can send your donation to Operation Smile at local banks. Many thanks from the children who can smile now.

Emily was an eighth grader. To pass her Civics course, she had to do some volunteer service in a nursing home for a week.
One Monday, Emily went to the nursing home after school. When she arrived, she was told she would spend an hour every weekday with an elderly lady, Mrs. Blair. She was then led into a room, where an old lady in a flowery dress was sitting on a sofa.
Emily stood nervously in front of the lady. She cleared her throat and said, “Good afternoon. I’m Emily.”
“Good afternoon, Emily. Take a seat, please,” Mrs. Blair replied.
Then, silence filled the space between them. Emily didn’t know what to say.
“Tell me about yourself, Emily,” Mrs. Blair said suddenly.
“Well,” Emily started, “I don’t have any grandparents, so I can’t relate to elderly people much. I love the performing arts. I’m here mainly because I have to be here to get a good grade for my Civics class.”
Mrs. Blair didn’t seem to mind. “Many people, especially teens, don’t seem to care about old people like me. Now you’re here, and I’m going to change that about you. Ask me anything.”
Emily thought for a moment, and finally decided, “What was your job?”
“I was a Broadway star in the 1950s,” Mrs. Blair answered.
“Cool! Can you tell me about it?” Emily asked, amazed.
Emily smiled along with Mrs. Blair and listened to the other stories, attentively. She had become so interested in Mrs. Blair’s stories that she decided to come earlier the next day.
Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday passed by quickly. Then came Friday. As she was leaving, Emily was really upset to say goodbye.
“Don’t be sad. You can still visit me,” Mrs. Blair comforted her. She then handed a small box to Emily, “It’s a gift for you. ”
Emily carefully opened the box and was surprised to see what was inside. “It’s the bracelet that you wore. Thank you!” Emily said, with tears in her eyes. “I’m sure to visit you whenever I’m free.”
On her way home, Emily thought of her own love for the performing arts. She touched the bracelet and made a promise that she would keep her word to Mrs. Blair.
