1 . March is the month to learn from Lei Feng in China. Lei Feng is probably the most famous Chinese soldier. He helped many people during his 22 years of life. He passed away more than 60 years ago. But the “Lei Feng spirit” still encourages Chinese people to do volunteer work. In 1963, Chairman Mao Zedong called on (号召) the nation to learn from Lei Feng, and each year’s March 5 has been named as “Lei Feng Day.”
At this time, a group of Malaysian students, studying at the Changsha Social Work College, volunteered to serve passengers at the Changsha Railway Station with their Chinese schoolmates. They worked patiently to help passengers with boarding safety (乘车安全) and ticket booking. They also provided waiting rooms for special passengers and solved problems for them.
“I was so excited when I was called a ‘living Lei Feng’! That was the highest praise for me as a volunteer!” said Lan Zhicong (Chinese name), an international student from Malaysia. He learnt about Lei Feng’s stories when he was in Malaysia. After he came to Changsha, the hometown of Lei Feng, he became a “living Lei Feng” and continued the “Lei Feng stories” with his behavior. “Volunteering is about giving, but I’ve gained a lot, too.” he said.
The Changsha Social Work College has organized a “learn from Lei Feng in Lei Feng’s hometown” activity this year. Several volunteer teams of teachers and students carried out different volunteer services at railway or bus stations, communities or campuses (校园) to carry forward the Lei Feng spirit.

5 . There were some big wildfires in Chongqing last summer. Although they were dangerous, we still saw many good people help in the big fires. Francis Stonier, a 43-year-old foreign teacher from Southwest University, was one of them.
The summer was very hot in Chongqing. One Sunday night, a forest fire broke out (爆发) and started to spread (扩散). The local government (当地政府) called for volunteers with special skills and experience to join in the firefighting.
Francis heard the news and decided to help. He said he had volunteered many times in Virginia, USA in the past. For example, he helped build houses for homeless people after big storms. He wanted to do something this time. So Francis signed up to fight fires. His work was to make sure the chainsaws (链) that would be used to create (创建) fire barriers (防火屏隆) worked well. During two hours of work, Francis group checked about 50 chainsaws and gave them to fire fighters. “Francis did a really good job. He checked each chainsaw carefully.” said He Wu, a 50-year-old teacher from Francis’ university. He was also one of the volunteers and a translator (翻译家) as well.
