1 . Ten years ago, I started to study luck. I wanted to know why some people are always in the right place at the right time, while others always experience ill luck. Many people volunteered for my research. Over the years I have interviewed them, watched their lives and had them take part in my experiments.
I did a simple experiment to discover why there were differences in their ability to find chances. I gave both lucky and unlucky people a newspaper and asked them to look through it and tell me how many photos were in it. I had secretly placed a large message halfway through the newspaper saying, “Tell the researcher you have seen this and win $50.” This message took up half of the page and was more than two inches (英尺) high. It was staring (盯着看) everyone straight in the face, but unlucky people tended to (倾向于) miss it and lucky people tended to find it.
Unlucky people are just more nervous than lucky people. They are busy looking only for what they need and this stops them from noticing the unexpected. As a result, they miss chances. Lucky people tend to be more relaxed and open. They can see everything that is in front of them, rather than just what they are looking for.
My research shows that lucky people live by several principles (原则). Here are some of these principles:
* Listen to your gut instincts (直觉)—they are often right.
*Be open to new experiences and break your normal thought patterns.
*Spend a few moments each day remembering things that went well.
*See yourself being lucky before an important meeting or phone call.

2 . Could you imagine being in a car driven by a computer, not a human? Nowadays, China has made a big step toward self-driving technology. Since August, driverless taxis can run on roads in Wuhan, Chongqing and Shenzhen.
Why do we develop self-driving cars? Self-driving cars have many advantages (优点). They use computers to sense the things around them and make better use of space. This means fewer crowded roads and better parking of cars. For disabled or blind people, self-driving cars can also help them get around more easily.
According to US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, each year, more than 1. 35 million people are killed on roads around the world. Many more are hurt in accidents. Self-driving cars could reduce (减少) road accidents by 90 percent and save governments a lot of money. The main cause of car accidents is human error. By using computers, self-driving cars don’t make poor decisions or lose attention like humans do.
But self-driving cars aren’t perfect. If something unexpected on the road happens, self-driving cars can’t react as fast as a human driver can. Also, during weather events like heavy snow, self-driving cars would be hard to see the lines on the road. It might lead to an accident.
It’s clear that there is a lot of work to do to make self-driving cars popular on our roads. And China is taking the lead in making this happen.
1. According to the passage, which is not the advantage of self-driving cars?A.They have computers to sense the things around them. |

Research in the Arctic is more difficult than in Antarctica. Antarctica is mainly land. So scientists can set up research stations on the land. However, the Arctic is mainly an ocean. Scientists can only set up drifting(流动的) stations or stations on boats in the Arctic.
There are also other differences between the two poles(极).
The Arctic is at the north end of Earth. Canada, Norway, Russia and five other countries have land there. Antarctica is at the south end of Earth. There are no countries there. People from all countries and regions can go there.
They are both cold, but Antarctica is colder. The winds at the South Pole are very strong. They blow away the winds from warmer places. But winds at the North Pole are not that strong. They mix with air from warmer places.

5 . Do you know about Bee & Flower? It was once a well-known hair care brand in China. Many brands like this have gone away because young people don’t know about them.
But recently, some old Chinese brands have made a comeback. It’s a good start, but there’s more to it.
In early September, anger over a Chinese makeup(化妆) brand’s eyebrow pens(眉笔) lit up the internet. Some people thought that they were too expensive as it cost 79 yuan to get three pens. Shortly after, Bee & Flower started to sell three large bottles of hair care products for the same price. It showed that Chinese products could still be cost-effective(划算的).
Many Chinese brands took their chance by selling through livestreaming(直播). What’s more, they also helped sell each other’s products. For example, hosts of sports brand Erke washed their hair with Bee & Flower products on Sept. 13.
Many people can’t stop buying these products. Why? For one thing, they think that the products of these Chinese brands are good to use and don’t cost much. Also, it makes buyers feel proud. They can help these old brands “come back to life” by buying the products. Buyers believe in these brands and will use their money to help them grow.
However, livestreaming events should only be a start. How can brands keep people interested? Good products with good prices. The brands shouldn’t take advantage of(利用) people’s trust. They should consider how to make their products better.

Rabbit is the fourth of the 12 Chinese zodiac(生肖) parts, in the order of Rat(鼠), Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig. It is the Year of the Rabbit this year. Because rabbits are gentle and smart, they are very popular with people from all over the world.
In China, rabbits are thought to be a lucky sign. That’s because rabbits can have many babies in the nature, even in terrible conditions. In the past, people thought the more children they had, the better their life would be.
The rabbit can make people think of the moon. Ancient Chinese people believed a rabbit was living on the moon. It was called the Moon Rabbit. The Moon Rabbit helped Chang’e to make medicine. Chang’e is a goddess(女神) and she was widely known in China.
Similarly, rabbits are seen to be lucky in Western culture. There are some traditions about how to get the rabbit’s good luck for yourself. For example, a rabbit’s foot is one of the most famous symbols of good luck and the person who holds it is supposed(推断) to be lucky. Also, people usually say the word “rabbit” on the first morning of every month. They’re looking forward to bringing themselves good luck for this whole month. Now it’s the Year of the Rabbit. Hope you are always lucky this year!

4. Do you like rabbits? Why or why not?
7 . Michelle, a famous lady, has found that more than 25% of students are too fat in her country. It is a very serious problem. So she starts a Health Program to deal with it. The Health Program is to reduce(减少) the number of fat students today and in the future.
The program will get families, schools, newspapers, magazines and TVs to join together and deal with the students obesity so that students will be at a healthier weight(重量). The program includes: Food stores should sell healthier foods, schools should arrange(安排) healthier meals without too much fat and more gym classes.
The lady is trying to fight the students’ obesity all over the country because it can cause illnesses and high food cost(花费). She wants the students to eat right, exercise more and control them to have less sweet food and drink water, milk and fresh juices, but not to choose cokes. At the same time, she has also set a good example by planting a vegetable garden. She hopes that the garden will encourage more people to plant one, too.

8 . Lots of scientists are studying robots today. Many robots don’t always look like people. Some are like big machines, and some are nothing but long arms. However, modern robots are smart. Some can solve problems on their own.
Robots are more and more useful and important in our life. They help us a lot. In factories, robots can help people do a lot of work. They work faster and do not need a rest. People will feel bored if they do the same job again and again, but robots will not. They can work in some dangerous places where people cannot.
Robots are useful in our homes, too. They can help us do some cooking. They can help the blind people read newspapers, and help the old people move some heavy things and so on. If we have some other problems, we can also ask them for help.
However, robots are not so clever as people. They cannot think like us. If we do not “teach" them how to do things first, they can do nothing.
It’s possible that we will have our own robots, and they will help us to do more things in the future.
1. What can we know from the first paragraph (段落)?A.No robots are like big machines. |

9 . Students usually go to school in different ways. In our school, most students get to school between 7:30 and 8:00 in the morning. Some arrive on foot, and some take the bus. However, eighty percent (百分比) of the students arrive in their parents’ cars. The entrance (入口) to the school is crowded and dangerous. I think cars are the main problem. I think there are a few things we can do.
First, we should encourage (鼓励) students to take the bus or walk to school. Taking the bus can help cut down air pollution. Walking is healthier, too. Next, what should parents do if their children have to come to school by car? I think their parents should park (停车) their cars far away from the school entrance.
For example, they can park their cars at the end of the street. Finally, in my opinion, when parents park dangerously in front of the school entrance, they will have to pay some money — a fine (罚金). This way, they will be cautious (谨慎的) and think twice before parking.
In a word, cars are making it dangerous for students to enter the school safely. So encouraging students to walk to school, or asking parents to park away from the school gate (大门) could solve this problem.
1. What time do most students in our school usually get to school?A.From 7:30 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. | B.Before 7 a.m. |
C.From 7:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. | D.After 8 p.m. |

10 . It’s normal for the human mind to wander (走神). So many things may fill your mind and pull your thoughts in different direction. This isn’t always bad. Sometimes a wandering mind can lead to a new creation. However, wandering thoughts can also stop you from getting things done, keep you up at night, or hurt your health. Don’t worry. Here is my advice about avoiding them.
Doing exercise and activities
Slow down and let your mind focus (专注) on your breathing. By controlling your breathing, you can bring your mind to work together with your body. Once you lose interest in what you’re doing, you can take a break from it. Go for a walk, do some exercise, take a shower or even lie down and think about nothing. These activities help a lot.
Focusing on tasks you’re doing
Do one task at a time. It won’t slow you down. Instead, it keep your mind focused and you’ll be able to get more done quickly. While doing tasks, don’t look around once in while. If there’s something keeping your mind wandering, allow yourself a specific (特定的) time to worry, think or plan. When the time is up, focus on your next task.
Controlling worrying thoughts
Writing down or sharing your worries helps to get them out of your head. When there’s a big task, it’s understandable to put it off. But by facing it bravely and trying to solve it, you can get away from your worrying thoughts. If it doesn’t work after you’ve tried everything, accept that there are always things you can’t change.
