Weifang in Shandong province has a long history of making kites. It is known as the birthplace of kites.
According to local artisans (工匠), Weifang kite-making appeared 2000 years ago. At first, they were often used by the army for measuring distance and communication purposes. During the Ming Dynasty (1368 —1644), kites started to be popular among ordinary people as entertainment.
Made from bamboo and decorated with traditional Chinese paintings, Weifang kite-making was included in the national-level intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产) lists in 2006. The International Kite Festival has been held in Weifang every year since 1984.
Yang Hongwei, 56, is an inheritor (传承人) of the Weifang kite-making skills. She was born in a kite-making family. Yang often saw kites with bright colors and different shapes in her grandfather’s workshop.
Having a special connection with kites, Yang learned the skills from her grandfather at the age of 16. After she had practiced the skills for 10 years, she started her own shop in 1992.
On Yang’s kites, people can see not only common shapes like butterflies and swallows (燕子), but also some prints telling ancient Chinese tales and history. For example, she once made a kite showing a phoenix (凤凰) head lined with pictures of 50 famous women in Chinese history on each side.

8 . Wukong, Tiangong, Tianwen … Do you know where the names of Chinese space programs come from?
Wukong, the Dark Matter Particle Explorer satellite (暗物质粒子探测卫星), is named after Chinese superhero the Monkey King. According to Journey to the West, the Monkey King has a pair of sharp eyes which can tell the difference between good and evil (邪恶的). The Wukong satellite is just as sharp-eyed as the Monkey King to help scientists search for dark matter in space.
The name of the space station, Tiangong, means the “Heavenly Palace”. In Chinese myths, this is the home of Tian Di. Now the Tiangong space station is a home for Chinese astronauts in space. And China welcomes foreign astronauts to Tiangong so that they can work together.
Tianwen, China’s Mars missions (任务), gets its name from the poem Tianwen by Qu Yuan. Qu Yuan is a well-known poet from ancient China. “Milano Cortina 2026 might be my last Winter Olympics. Whatever the result will be, I have only one goal (目标), which is to go beyond my earlier results,” 33-year-old Olympic champion Xu Mengtao said at her book launch party (新书发布会).
Xu was born in 1990 in Liaoning Province. Her parents ran a barbecue restaurant, where Xu would help out during holidays. Xu started her sports career at the age of 4 as a gymnast (体操运动员), before changing to freestyle skiing aerials (自由式滑雪空中技巧) at the age of 12, when she was considered too tall to continue gymnastics.
Xu has won 55 freestyle skiing aerials championships so far, but they have come at a cost.
Xu has had four operations on her knees. When she took part in the Pycongchang 2018 Winter Olympics, there were steel pins (钢钉) in her knees. Just as at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics and the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics, she wanted to get an Olympic gold medal. Unluckily, she failed to achieve her goal, although she tried her best.
But failures, painful injuries and lonely months of recovery (康复) didn’t stop her. Xu finally realized her dream at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, by completing three somersaults (空翻) on her final jump.
In her book, Xu records her true feelings about her life over the past 30 years, her memories of heart-stopping international competitions, the number of medals she won, the low points she managed to overcome (克服) and her full preparation for each competition. “Plan each jump, review each problem and look for every possibility. The real situation is unpredictable (无法预料的), so I have to be fully prepared,” Xu wrote in the book.
“I hope my personal experience can encourage more people to go after their dreams,” Xu added. “Don’t stop trying. It’s hard to say when your efforts will pay off, but they will do sorely at the most important moment.”
