The fourth Friday in November is super special, even more exciting than summer holidays or birthdays. Why? Because it’s Black Friday, one of the busiest shopping days when you can find amazing deals on things you love. But what is Black Friday, and why is it so much fun?
It began in the US on the Friday after American Thanksgiving, which falls on the fourth Thursday in November. The first people to use “Black Friday” were the Philadelphia (费城) police in the 1960s. On the day large numbers of people traveled there for Christmas shopping as well as an annual Army-Navy football game. The day was “black” because the police couldn’t take a day off after Thanksgiving, and instead had to work extra hard to control the crowds. It was in Philadelphia that stores first began to use this Friday as a good day for shopping, with some trying to call it “Big Friday”. But later the name “Black Friday” was widely used among people. In the end of the 1980s, it became an important shopping day across the US and, in time, around the world!
While in the past, videos would show crowds of people running into shops and fighting for the best prices, a lot of the buying now takes place online. Many companies now even begin their sales long before Black Friday itself, starting as early as the beginning of November, meaning there’s no need to line up as people did before.
Whether in stores or online, enjoy your Black Friday adventure to find great deals and have fun!
