In ancient China, bell and drum towers used to play the role of clocks in telling people the time. The bell sounded at dawn (黎明) and drum at dusk (黄昏). Today, bell and drum towers remain in some time-honored cities like Beijing and Xi’an. The bell and drum towers in Xi’an are symbols of the city’s rich past and are among the largest and best-preserved (保存最完好的) of their kind in China.

The Bell Tower sits at the very center of Xi’an. It is 36 meters high. It was built in 1384 and moved to its present location in 1582. Four busy roads cross just under the tower. Visitors need to use an underground walkway to reach the tower. Inside the tower, there is a small museum that houses a huge bell as well as some handwritten records on the history of the tower.

The Drum Tower is about 200 meters to the northwest of the Bell Tower. It is a small building. It lies next to a busy street where many restaurants and shops are located. It was built 4 years earlier than the Bell Tower. It is also one of the largest drum towers in China, with a height of 34 meters.

There is a square sitting between the Bell Tower and the Drum Tower. It is the best place to watch the two towers. According to the tourists, the two towers are more impressive in the evening as the lights add beauty to them. Don’t miss them when you take a trip to Xi’an!

6 . American modern music is popular with people. There are three main kinds of modern music in the United States. One of them is country music. It comes from the south of America. Country music is simple and we can relax ourselves when we listen to it. It tells us about the everyday life and the feelings of the people.

7 . Every Wednesday evening, a group of runners in Chongqing get together and set off on their 5-to-8-kilometer run through the city’s public spaces. But this is not a common run. The runners carry rubbish bags with them. They are a group of rubbish collectors who keep fit while helping clean up their surroundings (周围环境).

“Make running more than just running,” Sogor says, wearing a blue T-shirt with “We Run For Trash (垃圾)” on the back. She says that besides exercising in a fun way, Trash Running is also a way to make new friends and discover hidden places.

Sogor says that in addition to the weekly runs, the group also organize running to mark special days. On Earth Day, for example, they help clean up roads in the Gele Mountains.

There are now many runners in different jobs—office workers, yoga teachers, restaurant owners and so on. The oldest is in their forties, and the youngest is just five years old.

From time to time, the runners draw attention and get a big thumbs-up (竖起大拇指). Sogor said, “What one person can do is small, so we run together to make a better and greater influence.” She said that Trash Running has groups in many cities, including Shanghai, Beijing, Chongqing, Changchun and Wuhan. Over 9,300 people have joined the group and about 4,000 of them are trash runners.

8 . Eating lots of vegetables is good for our health. Different vegetables can help our bodies in different parts.

Eating carrots is good for our eyes. Carrots can help us see better at night. Peas are helpful to our bones (骨头) and teeth. Do you like red tomatoes? They look nice. Doctors call tomatoes “healthy vegetables”, because they can stop serious illnesses. They can also keep our skin healthy. So it’s important to eat some tomatoes. Don’s forget about spinach (菠菜) . The spinach leaves (叶子) have Vitamin (维生素) A, Vitamin C and Vitamin E. They can help us do our jobs better. They help red blood cells (细胞) form, too.

Vegetables are very important to us, but we can’t only have vegetables. We also need other kinds of food to keep healthy.

9 . Earthquakes are hard to predict (预测). But do you know what to do before, during and after an earthquake? Here’s some advice:

Before an earthquake

It’s necessary to prepare yourself and your family. All family members should know how to turn off gas (气), water and electricity (电) and know useful telephone numbers (doctor, hospital, police:119. etc.) Never put heavy things over beds.

During an earthquake

It’s important for each of you to stay calm. If you are indoors, quickly move to a safe place in the room, such as under a strong table. The purpose (目的) is to protect yourself from objects. Stay away from windows, large mirrors, heavy furniture and so on. If you’re cooking, turn off the gas. If you’re outdoors, move to an open area like a playground, move away from buildings bridges and trees. If you are driving, stop the car as soon as possible, staying away from bridges and tall buildings. Stay in your car.

After an earthquake

Once the shaking has stopped. DO NOT run out of the building at once. It’s better to wait and leave when it’s safe. Check around you and help the people who are in trouble.

10 . Tibet (西藏) is among the most popular places for Chinese tourists. The number of travellers of Tibet has grown by 10% every year for a few years. Since July 1st, 2006, when the first train ran1.956 kilometres from Xining to Lhasa, more and more people have been to Tibet.

The train stops at several famous places along the way, such as Qinghai Lake, Kunlun Mountain, and the Potala Palace. Passengers can also enjoy many activities during the journey, like Tibetan dancing and Karaoke.

On the train, passengers can have tea, eggs and noodles for breakfast, and fried chicken and green vegetables for lunch and dinner. Unlike most other Chinese trains which have open-hole toilets, this one has special toilets which can collect the waste. There is also a special rubbish system (系统) in the train that keeps the environment clean. All the windows on the train can protect people from the bright sunlight. TV and electrical sockets (插座) for computers and mobile phones can be found on the train.

Because there isn’t much oxygen there, trains will have oxygen masks for those who need them. It makes passengers feel more comfortable when they have enough oxygen on the famous “roof of the world”. There are also doctors on the train to make sure that all of the travellers are safe.
