Suddenly (突然), there came a car. It was going very fast. When the driver saw the boy in his way, he braked (刹车) hard. But it was too late ... The small boy was lying on the street without moving. To everyone’s surprise, the car didn’t stop. It drove away quickly.
People ran to the boy. There was a cut on the boy’s head and he lost a lot of blood. The coffee shop owner (主人) telephoned the police. Soon an ambulance (救护车) arrived and took the boy to the hospital.
At 6:30 p.m., the police arrived and started questioning people. About half an hour later, they asked me to go to the police station because I saw everything. I gave them all the information I knew because I really wanted them to catch the driver. I didn’t leave the police station until 8:00 p.m. After that I went home because I didn’t feel like talking to anyone.
The next day, the boy’s parents called me to say thanks. They also told me their boy was fine and the driver was in the police station now.

2 . Captain(船长) Nemo invited me and my friends to go hunting with him in the forests of Crespo Island. I asked him why he was so interested in Crespo Island, “I thought you preferred the sea to being on land.”
“I do,” replied the captain. “But these forests are under the sea.”
After going through a door, we were about ten metres under the water. The light from the sun reached us. Everything looked very colourful. We were going deeper and deeper. At 100 metres deep, we could see quite well, and Captain Nemo stopped and pointed to some dark shapes. This was the forest. The “trees” in the forest were giant seaweed(海草), and all their “branches” were vertical(垂直的).We could not stop looking at them. Fish swam around the branches like birds in a forest.
Suddenly, I saw a large sea spider about a metre tall. It was going to attack me. Captain Nemo's man killed it with his gun, but it reminded me that the sea could be as dangerous as it was beautiful. When we reached 150 metres, it was dark. The sun's light could not reach this depth(深度). We turned on our lights. We could see about 20 metres around us. Finally, we found Crespo Island—where a steep rock wall rose in front of us.
We could go no further, so we walked back towards the Nautilus. Suddenly, Captain Nemo stopped and shot an animal with his gun, it was a beautiful and rare sea otter(水獭). At last, we could see the Nautilus. Several large sharks swam over us. Luckily they didn't see us. We re-entered the Nautilus safely. I was tired but amazed by what I had seen.

Everyone would like to be remembered. A few people even try to do something that no one else in history has ever tried to do. These people sometimes have their names recorded(记录)in the Guinness Book of Records.
Often it takes a group of people to do something unusual. One such team paddled(用桨划)a bathtub(浴缸)145 kilometers for 24 hours. This group had 13 members. A month later, a racing team of hospital bed pushers in Avon, Great Britain, pushed a hospital bed 16 kilometers in just 50 minutes! However, the distance(距离)record for hospital bed pushing is still held by the men of Bruntsfield Bedding Center. This team from Edinburgh pushed a hospital bed 5,203 kilometers in 1979. It took the team 35 days to cover the distance.
Another group of record makers held the highest dinner party in the world. Nine people from Sydney,Australia, climbed Mountain Huascaran on June 28, 1989. The climbers carried a dinner table. chairs, and a meal up the mountain. When they reached the top, they all put on warm suits for dinner.

7 . Think about the different ways that people use the wind. You can use it to fly a kite or to sail a boat. Wind is one of our cleanest and richest power sources, as well as one of the oldest. Something shows that windmills(风车)began to be used in ancient Iran back in the seventh century BC. They were first introduced to Europe during the 1100s, when armies returned from the Middle East with knowledge of using wind power.
For many centuries, people used windmills to make wheat into flour(面粉) or get water from deep underground. When electricity was discovered in the late 1800s, people living in faraway areas began to use them to produce electricity. This allowed them to have electric lights and radio. However, by the 1940s when electricity was available to people in almost all areas of the United States, windmills were hardly used.
During the 1970s, people started becoming more cared about the pollution that is created when coal and gas are burned to produce electricity. People also realized that the supply of coal and gas would run out one day. Then, wind was rediscovered, though it means higher costs. Today, there is a global movement to supply more and more of our electricity through the use of wind.

A new study warns that about 30% of the world people may not have enough water by the year 2025.
A private American organization called Population Action International (PAI) did the new study. It says more than three hundred and thirty-five million people lack enough water now. These people live in twenty-eight countries. Most of the countries are in Africa or the Middle East.
PAI researchers Robert Engelman says by the year 2025, about three thousand million people may face water problems. At least 18 more countries are expected to lack enough water. The need for water keeps increasing. Yet the amount(数量) of water on the earth stays the same.
The report says lack of water in the future may cause several problems. It may increase health problems. Lack of water often means drinking water is not safe. Mr. Engelman says there are problems all over the world because of diseases, such as cholera, which are carried in water. Lack of water may also lead to more international conflict(冲突). Countries may have to fight for water in the future. Some countries now get sixty percent of their water from other countries. This is true of Egypt, the Netherlands, Cambodia, Syria, Sudan, and Iraq. And the report says lack of water would influence the ability to improve their economies(经济). This is because new industries often need a great amount of water when they are beginning.
The Population Action International study gives several solutions to the water problem. One
way, it says, is to find ways to use water for more than one purpose. Another way is to teach people to be careful not to waste water. A third way is to use less water for agriculture.
The report also says a long-term solution to the water problem is to control population growth. It says countries cannot provide clean water unless they slow population growth by limiting the number of children people have.

10 . Although people everywhere seem to enjoy drinking coffee, they don’t all have the same coffee culture. In Europe, for example, coffee shops are common places for people to meet friends and to talk while they drink coffee. On the other hand, places like this were not as common in North America in the past. Instead, people in North America liked to drink coffee in their homes with friends. The coffee culture in the USA changed when Starbucks (星巴克)coffee shops spread across the country.
The first Starbucks coffee shop opened in 1971 in downtown Seattle, Washington, in the USA. It was a small coffee shop that cooked its own coffee beans. The coffee shop’s business did well, and by 1981 there were three Starbucks stores in Seattle.
Things really began to change for the company in 1981.That year, Howard Schultz met the three men who 1 Starbucks. Schultz worked in New York for a company that made kitchen equipment. He noticed that Starbucks ordered a large number of special coffee makers, which caused his great interest. Schultz went to Seattle to see what Starbucks did. In 1982, the original Starbucks owners hired Schultz as the company’s head of marketing(市场营销).
In 1983, Schultz traveled to Italy. The special environment of the espresso(浓咖啡 ) bars there caught his eyes. Back in the USA, Schultz created an environment for Starbucks coffee shops that was comfortable and casual, and customers everywhere seemed to like it. Starbucks began opening more stores across the USA. Then the company opened coffee shops in other countries as well. Today, there are more than 16,000 Starbucks coffee shops all over the world.
However, that does not mean Starbucks has not had problems. In fact, many Starbucks stores have closed over the past few years. On the one hand, this is because there were too many coffee shops competing for business in one small area. On the other hand, stores in some countries closed because the coffee culture there did not match with the “feel the same everywhere” environment offered by Starbucks.
