1 . My father woke me up early one summer morning when I was fourteen and said: “Get up, you’re going with me to cut the grass in the garden.”

The idea that my father thought I was old enough to help him in his business (生意) made me feel proud (骄傲) and excited. From sunrise to sunset, my father, my younger brother and I worked in the large garden, in a rich part of Atlanta, Georgia. By the end of the day I was too tired to say a word but I felt good. This was my first time to help my father in his business. I got $ 6 for my work that day.

One day my father found some leaves I had missed and pulled me aside. “Take away these leaves!” he said seriously, “and don’t make me have to tell you to do it again.” The message was clear. I could learn something meaningful from every job and do it better and better. One day, a newspaper reporter once asked me how someone could possibly live with hard work and low pay. “If you only think about hard work and money, 58 ” I answered.

3 . ①Many people want to travel around the world. Some choose to travel from country to country and others like to spend a bit longer in each place, perhaps living and working among the people and immersing(使...沉浸在) themselves in the culture. One interesting idea is to turn your overseas(海外的) experience into a language learning experience. If you would like to learn English, attending courses at one or more of the language schools is the perfect way to travel around the world and improve your English at the same time. You can also make friends with the people who are learning English on their travels.

②Learning English at a language school in a country where English is spoken is the perfect way to make quick progress in the language. When you're not in class, you'll be practicing English in practical day-to-day environments. You'll also be visiting the cities and towns around you, museums and tourist attractions.

③Another advantage(优点) of attending a language school while you are traveling abroad is that many of the activities you want to do on your travels will be organized as part of the English learning experience as well. So you'll have a group of friends to travel with you as you visit new places---all with the same aim(目标) of learning English along the way.

④Your overseas experience is a great time to make new friends, see the world and experience other cultures. If English isn't your first language, it makes sense to connect your overseas experience with a decision to learn English along the way. What a great way to travel around the world, improve your education and prepare for your future at the same time!

From the kitchen mother shouted that my jacket was in the closet. I rushed and pulled at the clothes in the closet, hoping the jacket on the bed wasn't for me but my brother. No luck, I wanted to cry because it was so ugly and so big. But I knew I'd have to wear it a long time before I'd have a new one. I looked at the jacket like an enemy, thinking bad things before I took off my old and small jacket.

I put the big jacked on. I stood in front of the mirror, turning right and left. I looked ugly.

6 . Cold weather has a great effect on how our minds and our bodies work. Maybe that is why there are so many expressions that use the word “cold”.

For example, people who show no human emotions or feelings are said to be cold-blooded. Cold can affect other parts of the body. But the expression “get cold feet” has nothing to do with cold or your feet. The expression means being afraid to do something you have decided to do. For example, you agree to be CEO of a company. But then you learn that all the other officers have resigned (辞职), and all the work of the company will be your responsibility (责任). You are likely to get cold feet about being CEO when you understand the situation.

The expression “give someone the cold shoulder” probably comes from the physical act of turning your back toward someone, instead of speaking to him face to face. You may give the cold shoulder to a friend who has not kept a promise he made to you, or to someone who has lied about you to others.

“A cold fish” is not a fish. It is a person. But it is a person who is unemotional and shows no love or warmth. A cold fish does not offer much of himself to anyone. Someone who is a cold fish could be cold-hearted. He or she will never feel sorry for those in bad situation.

“Out in the cold” means not getting something that everybody else got. A person might say that everybody but him got a pay raise — he was left out in the cold. And it is not a pleasant place to be.

1. If you get cold feet, this means that .
A.you feel brave to do somethingB.you feel too nervous to do something
C.you feel too cold to do somethingD.you feel very angry about doing something

A.Henry was treated politely when he asked Mary to see a film
B.Henry was afraid to invite Mary to see a film with him
C.Mary didn’t care about Henry’s invitation and didn’t plan to go with him
D.Mary behaved unfriendly because she didn’t like to talk with Henry face toface
3. What’s the passage mainly about?
A.Opinions about cold weather.B.Expressions connected with “cold”.
C.Relation between cold and body.D.Examples of people who have a cold.
4. Which of the following shows the structure (结构) of the passage? (P = paragraph)
A.B.C.D.

7 .
①In the eyes of animal lovers, dogs are man’s best friend. However, they can sometimes be dangerous. In August, a 13-year-old boy in Chengdu was hit in his neighborhood by a German dog that wasn’t on a leash (拴绳). The boy ended up in the hospital with several bite wounds. This was just one of several recent accidents across the country in which unleashed dogs have hit people. It has raised a discussion over whether it’s OK to walk dogs without a leash.
②Li Ke is used to walking his dog without a leash. He thinks if dog owners pay attention to their dogs, it’s unlikely that the dogs will hurt others.
③However, Cao Siyuan, from Chengdu, believes people should not walk a dog without a leash, especially in crowded public places. “Leashing dogs stops them from running about or getting hurt,” Cao told Chinanews. “At the same time, it also stops dogs from biting or hitting others when they are angry.”
④Many cities in China have rules saying that owners will be punished if their pets are allowed to run free outside. “But the local rules are not strict,” Guan Xinping, a professor from Nankai University, told China Daily. “Some owners who don’t follow the rules, such as having dogs unleashed, have received no warnings or punishments at all.”
⑤However, some cities have tried to solve the problem in more creative ways. In January last year, Jinan introduced a point system in which dog owners will lose points if they walk the dog without a leash and a dog certificate (证书). If owners lose all their points, they must be trained on how to care for dogs. Their dogs will also be taken away until they pass the training. Thanks to the system, the city saw problems of unleashed dogs go down by 43 percent in 2017 compared to 2016.

A.there is no need to leash a dog if the dog owner is careful enough with it
B.those who have dogs unleashed shouldn’t receive warnings or punishments
C.leashing dogs stops them from running about freely and it’s not good for dogs
D.it’s creative to introduce a point system to solve the problem of unleashed dogs
3. Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage?
A.B.C.D.
4. What is the best title for the passage?
A.Dogs or No Dogs?B.Dogs Are Very Dangerous.
C.Leash or Unleash?D.Dogs Are Our Best Friend.

8 . Everybody knows how important it is for students to get a good night's sleep every night. You aren't able to do your best and keep up with all of your responsibilities unless you sleep well. I'm sure you already know that you should go to bed at a reasonable hour. Most experts agree that the ideal number of hours is eight, and his has been accepted as common sense for as long as I can remember. However, I was young once and I know that most of you get much less sleep than that—and in some cases it will be affecting your schoolwork.

I read an interesting article in a teachers' magazine recently. they did a study of 848 students in Wales. Worryingly, the results showed that teenagers are facing a new problem. They may go to bed get up at suitable times but a growing number are waking up in the middle of the night, not to use bathroom or have a snack but because of a new phenomenon: FOMO-fear of missing out!

According to the article, schoolchildren are suffering because of a growing trend(趋势)to wake up during the night to check social media. Afraid of missing a comment or opportunity to take part in a chat teenagers are waking at all times of the night, going online and getting involved. All this happens when they should be sound asleep.

Experts are worried about this growing trend and the report gives some worrying results that I'd like to share with you: 23% of 12 to 15-year-olds wake up nearly every night to use social media. Another 15% wake up at night once a week for the same reason. One in three students are often tired and unable to behave energetically in the daytime. Students who use social media during the night are more likely to suffer from depression and anxiety.

So, I'd like to ask you to be responsible when it comes to social media. Be brave! Switch off your devices at night. The world won't end and your social media will be waiting to greet you in the morning! I give you my word that you won't have missed anything important.

9 . We all need physical exercise. Exercise uses up food we eat and keeps the body energetic. If you exercise several times a week, you will stay happy and healthy.

Some Western countries, such as the United States, have problems with exercise. In the US, many people don't have enough exercise because it is hard for them. People have to work from morning to late afternoon, so they don't have time to take exercise. They work in office buildings sitting in chairs all day long in front of computers. It is impossible for them to get much exercise in this way.

Some Westerners can get exercise walking from their homes to work. However, most of people cannot do this. It is too far from their homes to their offices. They have no choice but to drive to work. In fact, some have to drive one or two hours to their offices. This is not good in two ways. First, these people don't have a chance to exercise because they are sitting in their cars for two to four hours each day. Second, driving is challenging especially in rush hours and needs too much attention. It makes a person very tired. So, when these people arrive home at night, they don't want to take exercise after work.

Today, many people in the West are overweight which causes health problems for them. Doctors say exercise can help people both lose weight and improve their health. So many people are trying to get more exercise. But it takes time to change, and when people don't see a difference right away, they will lose confidence and stop exercising.
