1 . A 5.7-meter-tall giraffe has been named the world’s tallest giraffe by Guinness World Records.
Twelve-year-old Forest has been officially named the tallest living giraffe after the workers at Australia Zoo in Queensland, Australia were able to measure him after months of trying.
They made a measuring pole (测量杆) and put it close to a feeding station in the giraffe house. They then waited several months to get the videos and photos needed by Guinness World Records.
Forest lived in Auckland Zoo in New Zealand at birth, and was moved to Australia Zoo when he was 2 years old. He is much taller than the other two giraffes at the zoo, both of whom are female (雌性的). Forest has been very important at the zoo. As the father of 12 young giraffes, he is still in the breeding period (繁殖期).
Giraffes are the tallest animals on Earth. The average (平均的) adult male giraffe is between 4.6 and 5.5 meters tall. The tallest giraffe was 5.8 meters tall. The giraffe, called George, arrived at England’s Chester Zoo from Kenya in 1959, but died in 1969.
Bindi Irwin from Australia Zoo told Guinness World Records that the zoo is proud to be helping to make sure that giraffes will still be around in the future.

2 . Scientists did a study about snakes at Wilfrid Laurier University, in Canada. We may think snakes are loners. Actually they may not be the loners. Scientists found that snakes actively search for other snakes to spend time with. Simply put, snakes have friends.
The study joins a growing body of research. They all show that friendships among animals could be more common than we thought.
The scientists used 40 snakes to do an experiment. These snakes often live in the southeastern United States. The snakes were tested for personalities such as shyness. Scientists put them into an enclosure(围墙), ten of them at one time. The enclosure had four little house-like structures(建筑物)in it. For eight days, scientists watched the snakes traveling from house to house. Once a while, they took a snake out of the traveling from house to house. Once a while, they took a snake out of the enclosure, then put it back in a different structure. The researchers noticed something interesting: No matter where they put the snakes, the snakes found a way to rejoin their “friends”. It means that snakes “have social understanding”. They can tell others apart. And they choose who they want to be with.
Why would snakes need friends? It could be for protection. It’s unlikely they’re looking for someone to play video games with.

When a whale dies, its big body will fall to the bottom(底部) of the sea and a special deep-sea ecosystem(生态系统) will be formed in a long time. Scientists give a name to this: the whale fall (鲸落).
Recently, some scientists on a Chinese research ship called Tansuo-1 found a whale fall at the depth of 1,600 meters in the South China Sea. 1. As far as we know, this is the first time for China to find this kind of special ecosystem. So far, less than 50 modern natural whale falls have been found by humans around the world.
2. The whale fall is really important to deep-sea animals, as it provides food for them. Usually, the whale fall goes through three stages (阶段). The first stage comes just after the whale’s death. As well as the whale dies, many marine animals will come to eat its body. This stage can last for months. At the second stage, smaller animals come for the whale’s bones and leftovers (残留物). This stage can last one or two years. Bacteria (细菌) play an important role in the third stage, 3. because they are able to turn the rest of the whale into useful things to the sea. 4. 但是这个阶段能持续长达100年。
The whale fall found in the South China Sea is 3 meters long. It is still in the first stage. The scientists will spend a long time in studying the whale fall to understand the deep-sea ecosystem better.
People always say that one whale falls, everything lives. 5. 这提醒我们要保护鲸鱼而不是杀害它们。Don’t forget that whales are in great danger, and they need our help.

Last month, I took my son Tom to see his grandparents in the countryside. His grandpa took him out to the yard to play. Tom was curious about everything.
At lunch, Tom told me, “Dad, I saw a hen flying.” “Impossible!” I said without thinking, “How can a hen fly?” “Dad, the dog ran after the hen in the yard. The hen was trapped(困住) in a corner. When the hen saw no other way out, she suddenly flapped her wings (拍打翅膀) and flew up to the roof. Dad, I didn’t know hens could fly. How can she fly?” my child asked. I thought for a while and said, “Maybe because of love. The hen loves her own life and that helps her fly!” Tom nodded. He seemed to have understood.
Last weekend, we visited Tom’s grandparents again. This time I heard Tom shouting from the yard, “Dad! The dog is chasing the hen again! Come and see!” I ran out of the house. The hen was running after a group of chicks(小鸡), followed closely by the dog.
Then the hen suddenly stopped and turned around–she raised up her wings and clucked (咯咯叫) at the dog. I ran over and got between the dog and the hen, shouting at the dog to drive it away. “Dad, why didn’t the hen fly away? She knows she can’t fight the dog,” Tom asked. I thought for a while and said, “Maybe because of love. She loves her babies more than anything in the world.” Tom thought for a long time and nodded. He seemed to have understood.

7 . Hibernation(冬眠)is a way to spend winter for many animals. Some animals will hibernate when the food supply runs low and the temperature drops, causing it to be too cold to wander about.
Some animals might go into a deep sleep for long time, while others will just slow down but remain active. Now let’s see something about chipmunks’ hibernation.
You might mistake these tiny animals for baby squirrels. That could be because they belong to the squirrel family. You can watch chipmunks play in spring, summer, and fall, but in winter, they enter their hibernation process.
Where chipmunks hibernate: You will find chipmunks digging a hole as deep as 3 feet under the ground usually directly under or next to a cover. During their active daytime , later in summer and early autumn , you will often enjoy watching them as they nestle(采集)their nuts between their cheeks and take them to their burrows(地洞)to save for their winter hibernation.
During the hibernation:During the winter hibernation, chipmunks’ body temperature will drop. They will sleep heavily waking occasionally(偶尔)for food , and not be seen again until springtime when they will play. During the late summer, they will work hard once again, collecting food to prepare for the next winter.

Some people think it’s not easy to hurt an elephant because its skin is thick and hard. In fact, that’s wrong. Sometimes, a needle (针) can also be very dangerous for the elephant.
People say elephants are afraid of mice. This is wrong, too. In fact, elephants have very poor eyesight, so they usually cannot see a mouse even if one comes very close to them. If a person has a good memory, people will say that he has an elephant memory. However, up to now, no study shows that elephants have a better memory than any other animal.
People also believe that when it is time for elephants to die, they will hide themselves in a so-called “elephant graveyard”. Often, hunters try to find such places to get ivories, but few people really find places like that. In fact, when elephants are old or get sick, they will stay in deep and secret caves (山洞) until they get better or die.
