A: Hi, Jane! I read an interesting book last night.
B: Really?
A: It’s about a strange travel to Mars.
B: Do you think we can travel to Mars?
A:
B: Do you think we can live there?
A:
B: Neither do I. The gravity on Mars isn’t as strong as it’s on the earth. We can hardly stand still on Mars.
A:
B: Yeah. It’s really hard for us to live there. But maybe we can spend our holidays there in the future.
A: It will take us about eight months to get there by spaceship when the two planets are closest to each other.
B: I wish to fly to Mars some day. That must be great fun.

Scientists have always wanted to know more about the other worlds in space. Years ago they knew a lot about the moon. They knew how big it was and how far it was
The moon is about 384,000 kilometers
4 . Many people believe that the Moon was once part of the Earth and broke away millions of years ago. Other people say that it came from another part of space.
There are high mountains, deep valleys and wide flat spaces on the Moon. Animals and plants can’t live on the Moon because it has no air or water. There are no clouds, no rain and no snow, either.
Sound needs air to travel. There is no air on the Moon. So there can be no sound there. The Moon is a silent place.
The Moon has no light of its own. It looks bright because the Sun’s light shines on it. During the day, the rocks become hotter than boiling (沸腾的) water. This is because the Moon is closer to the Sun than the Earth.
The Moon is about 383 thousand kilometres away from the Earth. It takes a spaceship about three days to reach the Moon. But it would take a car nearly six months to travel this way.
1. What can we see on the Moon?A.Water. | B.Clouds. | C.Mountains | D.Snow. |
A.Quiet. | B.Bright. | C.Wet. | D.Large. |
A.Because there is no air on the Moon. |
B.Because the Moon is close to the Earth. |
C.Because the Sun’s light shines on the Moon. |
D.Because there isn’t any light on the Moon. |
A.We can take a car to the Moon. |
B.We can hear some sound on the Moon. |
C.It’s cold on the Moon in the daytime. |
D.There aren’t any animals or plants on the Moon. |
Hi, I’m Sherry, and I’m an amateur astronomer (天文爱好者), which means that I like to learn about faraway stars and planets and other mysterious things in space just for fun. I recently toured the Kitt Peak National Observatory (天文台).
The mountain the observatory is built on belongs to a Native American tribe (部落). I heard people in the tribe didn’t allow astronomers to build the observatory on its mountain at first, but they changed their mind after looking through a telescope (望远镜)!
The mountaintop is perfect for star watching.
The Kitt Peak National Observatory has a collection of 26 telescopes! These aren’t telescopes you can hold in your hand.
A.It sits high on top of a tall mountain. |
B.Away from city lights, it stays dark at night. |
C.Some of the telescopes are large and expensive. |
D.All these telescopes need a whole building to hold them up and protect them. |
E.One is a solar (太阳的) telescope that astronomers use during the day for studying the sun. |
F.They started saying the astronomers had “long eyes” since they could see so far with their telescopes. |
G.Telescopes have an influence on the way we view the universe. |
6 . We live on Earth. It’s our home. But how much do you know about it? Let me tell you something about our Earth.
The Earth is not flat as we see but it is like a huge sphere in the space. Like the other seven planets (行星), the Earth is running around the Sun. It’s the third nearest one to the Sun. It takes the Earth about 365 days to run around the Sun.
At the same time, the Earth is going around itself. If you are in space, you can see lots of white clouds over the surface (表面) of the Earth. Through the clouds, you can see the blue colour of the oceans, and the brown colour of the land. About 70% of the Earth is covered with water. Why do we have day and night? When the half of the Earth is facing the Sun, it’s daytime. As the Earth turns, and this half is away from the Sun, night is coming. And it’s daytime for the other half.
1. How many planets are running around the Sun?A.Seven. | B.Eight. | C.Nine. | D.Ten. |
A.ball | B.hair | C.bag | D.rock |
A.the Earth is away from the Sun | B.the Earth is running around the Sun |
C.the half of the Earth is facing the Sun | D.the half of the Earth is away from the Sun |
A.In a storybook. | B.In a science magazine. |
C.In a cartoon book. | D.In a fiction (科幻) story. |
In the universe (宇宙) , as we all know, there is the Sun, the Moon, the Earth and a large number of stars. Through our Geography lessons, we know that the Sun is a star, the Earth is a planet and the Moon is a satellite (卫星) . We also know the Earth goes around the Sun and the Moon goes around the Earth. We have day and night because the Earth keeps turning all the time When our part of the Earth turns to the Sun, it is day. When our part of the Earth turns away from the Sun, it is night.
Just because the Moon is closer to the Earth than the Sun, it looks much bigger than the Sun. Big things will look smaller when they are farther and small things also look bigger when they are nearer.
The Sun is big enough to give out strong light. The Moon can’t give out any light at all, but it looks quite bright, too. Why? In fact, the light from the Moon comes from the Sun. The Moon looks much bigger and brighter than the stars, but in fact the stars are much bigger and brighter than the Moon. They look smaller than the Moon also because they are farther away from the Earth.
There are many other facts about the universe and we should study hard to know more.
1. Who can help us know a lot about the universe?A.An Art teacher. | B.A Geography teacher. | C.A Math teacher. | D.An English teacher. |
A.closer | B.farther | C.brighter | D.darker |
A.The Moon is the only one to move between the Earth and the Sun. |
B.The Moon goes around the Earth and it also moves around the Sun. |
C.The Moon goes around the Sun and its light is coming from the Sun. |
D.The Moon goes around the Earth and it can’t give out any light at all. |
A.Some facts about the Sun | B.Some facts about the Moon |
C.Some facts about the Earth | D.Some facts about the universe |
We look at the sun every day.
On Sept. 2nd, 2021, China’s Fengyun-3E satellite took its first photo of the sun.
One of the satellite’s sides faces the sun all the time.
Clear pictures of the sun can help scientists study it more deeply. For example, scientists can better study solar storms. These may affect the weather on Earth.
A.It used China’s solar space telescope (望远镜) to do the job. |
B.By watching the sun closely, we can take actions to protect ourselves. |
C.Big solar storms may also make our phones stop working. |
D.But do you know what the sun really looks like? |
E.It can watch the sun’s activity without stopping. |
9 . The longest total solar eclipse (日全食) of the 21st century took place in China and some other countries in Asia on July 22, 2009.
Total solar eclipses of such a long time are very rare (稀罕的).
Think about what happened, one Shanghai resident (居民) said, “It’s like magic,
