3 . In English, when someone is very angry, we say this person “sees red”, like the way a bull (公牛) goes wild after seeing a red cloth. Now it turns out that “seeing red” is not just an expression for angry people, but also a scientific fact.
Researchers at North Dakota State University in the US found that there is a connect ion between the color red and anger. Angry people really do “see red” where others don’t. And a preference (偏爱) for red over blue may even suggest a more hostile personality (性格).
The study includes a number of experiments. In the first, researchers asked a group of people which color they preferred, red or blue. Participants (参加者) then did personality tests. Results showed that those who chose red may be more hostile.
During a second test, participants looked at faded (褪色的) pictures that could be seen as either red or blue. Those who saw red scored 25 percent higher on hostility in the personality test.
“Hostile people have hostile thoughts; hostile thoughts are connected with the color red, and therefore hostile people see this color more often,” the researchers told The Independent.
Finally, the participants were told about imaginary (虚构的) situations in which they could take different actions. Results showed that in these situations, red-preferring people were more likely to show that they would hurt another person than those who preferred blue.
“An important message from this research is that color can send psychological (心理的) meaning,” the researchers said.

Have you ever heard someone say, “breakfast is the most important meal of the day”, or give you advice about why
It seems that this feast (美味佳肴), for many of us, is necessary for our day to start well, but is it really that important? The word “breakfast” comes
So, while breakfast has its benefits, it might not be the most important meal. A balanced diet might be more important for many of us than just one single meal.
6 . There’s much to see under the sea, but you need to remember that light behaves differently in water than in air. The objects appear closer to you than they exactly are. You might find yourself reaching out to touch something and completely miss it.
Objects underwater will appear larger than they would on the surface, too. Be careful not to tell any stories about the big fish that got away. That fish might not be so big after all! It’s just because sometimes things can seem to be as much as about 33 percent bigger in water!
What’s more, in deeper water, colors just don’t seem as bright. In fact, it looks as if some colors are missing. Remember the color of an object results from the wavelengths (波长) of light that are reflected (反射) from its surface. And light is taken in as it moves down through the water.
Swimmers wear wet suits to keep warm underwater. Let’s take a bright red, yellow, and blue wet suit as an example. These colors are hard to miss on the surface of water. Watch carefully the changes in color as you descend in the water. The red part now looks almost black because the red light wavelengths, the longest among these three colors, are missing. As you go down deeper, the same thing will happen to the yellow part and in the end to the blue part. Even at a place of about 6 to 9 meters underwater, you will look terrible, like a ghost(鬼怪)! And you have to wait for your return to the surface to enjoy the bright colors again.
1. You miss the object underwater when you want to touch it because ________.A.it disappears very quickly | B.it is not as close as it seems |
C.you are not quick enough | D.your eyesight is quite poor |

7 . We know mosquitoes (蚊子) very well. They can fly wherever they want to go.
Mosquitoes are one of many kinds of insects.
After enjoying a delicious meal from you, mosquitoes are lucky enough to run away. Now they are very tired.
When mosquitoes bite (叮咬) you, they may spread some diseases.
A.You need to take action ahead of time to keep away from them. |
B.During the whole process, they act quietly and quickly. |
C.They have a small and light body. |
D.We can find them all over the world. |
E.They just want a good place to have a good rest. |
8 . China’s South-to-North Water Diversion Project (南水北调工程) is a huge project which has three water lines: east, central and west. Each water line is over 1,000 kilometers. The central line is over 1,400 kilometers long. It starts at Danjiangkou and runs through Henan, Hebei, Beijing and Tianjin. On such a long transportation journey, how can we make sure the water is clean and safe?
All year round, the instruments under the water are working for changes of water. If something unusual is found, the staff will take action right away.
The drones (无人机) over the water surface are flying to check the river. They can fly up to 400 meters in height and 5 kilometers in distance. The cameras carried by the drones can provide the water condition of the river. On these facts, people will know whether the water situation is safe or not.
Besides, the water from Danjiangkou needs to go through the “two nets” before entering the riverbed. Almost all the big floating (漂浮) objects on the water are kept off the gates. Then the cleaning robots will work much further against the small ones.
The staff are required to monitor the water quality every day so that every drop of water can meet the safety standard. The central line project includes 5 fixed laboratories, I mobile laboratory, 13 water quality monitoring stations...in Henan, Hebei, Tianjin, and Beijing. They are all working day and night to make people drink clean and safe water.
The primary purpose of the central line is to provide living water for the people along the line. So the water quality is of great importance. With those efforts, the water quality of the central line project meets the Class Ⅱ standard for surface water, Nearly 80 million people along the line get clean water from it since its opening in December, 2014.

10 . If you’ve ever thought that dogs seem to know when people are stressed (有压力的), you were right. Scientists did a study which showed that dogs can tell the difference between the smell of a person when they’re relaxed and when they’re stressed.
All day long, our bodies go through changes and produce different chemicals (化学物质). These chemicals come out in our breath and sweat (汗液), changing the way we smell. But it wasn’t known if stress could cause changes that could be discovered.
So the researchers collected breath and sweat samples (样本) from 36 different people. They got samples when the people were relaxed, and also when they were stressed. To stress people out, the scientists asked a really difficult math problem, and forced people to do it in their heads quickly. And they weren’t nice about it. They kept telling them to hurry up. That lasted three minutes. Then the researchers collected two more sweat and breath samples.
The scientists used one of the stressed samples, along with two clean pieces of cloth, to train the dogs to find the stressed smell. Then came the challenge (挑战) —the dogs had three choices: a sample from a relaxed person, a stressed sample from that same person, and a clean piece of cloth. In all, the dogs did 720 tests. They correctly identified the stressed sample about 94% of the time.
The results make it clear that stress does have a smell that dogs can find. Scientists say the news could be especially useful in training service dogs, since their job is to help people who have stress.
