TIME announced the 2022 Idol of the Year. 60-year-old Michelle Yeoh was named and made the cover. She used her power to tell everyone that ________.

When it came to how she made it, she especially talked about the power of representation (代表). She said that so far, no Asian women had won the Academy Award for Best Actress, so whenever there was a chance, she would catch it and make every effort to play the role.

However, it’s not that easy to be recognized (赏识). “I’ve been working in this industry (行业) for almost 40 years and to finally be recognized for my work. Before that, I’ve been everywhere and I’ve done everything because there are fewer roles waiting for women as we grow older. And then you find you can only play some older women roles. In those days of waiting, I felt really thankful for the love, care and support that I got from the people around me. And now I get everything all at once. So it’s worth the wait.”

That’s the real difficulty actresses need to face. What happened dramatically is that women have started to take control of their own life. They’re not going to wait for someone else to create roles for them. Maybe in the future, more actresses will be recognized for their talent and hard work.

1. Was Michelle Yeoh named TIME’s 2022 Idol of the Year?

3 . Athletics VS. Gardening

The students of Southside School were asked to give their opinions about whether the school should run an athletic (体育运动的) program or start a vegetable garden.

An athletic program is much better than gardening. How will we win the Inter-School Athletics without training? At the moment, we only do athletics for one term and the teachers train us. We need experts (专家) to teach us things like throwing and high jump.

Kids should get enough exercise when they are growing up. Gardening can’t make a kid get much exercise. However, an athletic program can make it.

Athletics is much better for health and lots of kids can try at the same time. I don’t think there would be enough jobs for everyone in a garden.

In fact, I think a garden is a really bad idea. I don’t know why we’re even considering it.

Liz, Grade 8

I think a vegetable garden is a great idea. We already do hours of sport, including athletics. And not everyone likes sport.

Gardening is a great way to get exercise without worrying about whether you’re good at it, or whether you’re going to win. And you can really get exercise when you garden. There’s digging, weeding (除草) and watering. Even picking things can be hard work.

And think about it: what helps you to be good at sport? You need to eat lots of fruit and vegetables. If we learn to cook all the things we grow, the garden will keep us healthy, and then we’ll be better at sport.

Sam, Grade 8

1. What is one reason Liz gives for saying “garden is a really bad idea”?
A.Students can’t get exercise at all by gardening.
B.Some students don’t enjoy being outside.
C.Some students already know how to garden.
D.The garden can’t offer enough jobs for everyone.
2. Which of these points do Liz and Sam both make?
A.Kids should eat vegetables.B.Kids should take exercise.
C.Kids should try to win more.D.Kids should learn to cook.
3. Why does Sam say “And think about it: what helps you to be good at sport?”
A.To change the topic.B.To support Liz’s idea.
C.To introduce his next reason.D.To explain health is important.

In the United States, another kind of robot helps disabled people to take care of themselves in their daily life. The robot hears the sound of its owner’s voice. It follows instructions such as “Turn the page” or “Make a cup of coffee”.

When talking about Chinese literature, Journey to the West is often at the top of people’s lives. It is a classic novel     1     (write) in the sixteenth century by Wu Cheng’en (about 1500—1583). It is one of     2     (well-known) Chinese literary works in the west.

Journey to the West’s popularity has made it an inspiration for many Western works—and not just in the world of literature. Fred Ho, a musician, wrote     3     opera called Journey Beyond the West: The New Adventures of Monkey. The opera, which includes kung Fu performances and other Chinese elements (元素), borrows directly     4     Journey to the West.

Characters from Journey to the West have also     5     (appear) in many Western video games, including Over watch, War frame and League of Legends. And     6     (recent) in 2017, Netflix hosted a South Korean show called A Korean Odyssey that is a comedic retelling of the past Journey story.

But why has Journey to the West lasted not just for one year or ten years, but for     7     (century)?

James Trapp, a writer for the British Council, suggests that Sun Wukong, known to most Western readers     8     the Monkey King, is the reason for the novel’s lasting popularity. “In many ways, the Monkey King is the archetype of the folk hero, or in modern terms, the superhero,” Trapp wrote. In these ways, the Monkey King is similar to Western folk heroes such as Huckleberry Finn. However, he has been around for much     9     (long) than many of these heroes.

The story itself is similar to that of the Western classic Odyssey, a Greek poem about a     10     (hero) journey of self-discovery and victory. Its similarity to famous Western stories has made Journey to the West popular among Western readers for hundreds of years.
