2 . We recycle rubbish, so why not language? Recycling language means using the vocabularies again and again. If we do not recycle them, we simply forget them. So how do we recycle language?     1    

The first is through reading.     2     Just reread them and do not worry about each vocabulary. If there are some that we are not sure about, make a guess and we will probably guess right.

    3     Look at some of our favorite articles and write either a short paragraph or some sentences in our own words. After we have done this for many times, we will have a new understanding.     4     We can study from mistakes.

The third way, have a chat with ourselves about our favorite articles at home.     5     Just tell him what we are thinking about or how we feel.

Buck did not read the newspapers. He did not know that trouble was coming for every big dog in California. Men had found gold in the Northland, and these men wanted big, strong dogs to work in the cold and snow of the north.

Buck lived in Mr Miller’s big house in the sunny Santa Clara valley. There were large gardens and fields of fruit trees around the house, and a river nearby. In a big place like this, of course, there were many dogs. There were house dogs and farm dogs, but they were not important. Buck was chief dog, he was born here, and this was his place. He was four years old and weighed sixty kilos. He went swimming with Mr Miller’s sons and walking with his daughters. He carried the grandchildren on his back, and he sat at Mr Miller’s feet in front of the fire in winter.

But this was 1897, and Buck did not know that men and dogs were hurrying to north-west Canada to look for gold. And he did not know that Manuel, one of Mr Miller’s gardeners, needed money for his large family. One day, when Mr Miller was out, Manuel and Buck left the garden together. It was just an evening walk, Buck thought. No one saw them go, and only one man saw them arrive at the railway station. This man talked to Manuel, and gave him some money. Then he tied a piece of rope around Buck’s neck.

Buck growled, and was surprised when the rope was pulled hard around his neck. He jumped at the man. The man caught him and suddenly Buck was on his back with his tongue out of his mouth. For a few moments he was unable to move, and it was easy for the two men to put him into the train.

When Buck woke up, the train was still moving. The man was sitting and watching him, but Buck was too quick for him and he bit the man’s hand hard. Then the rope was pulled again and Buck had to let go.

7 . Many people like animals and keep one or more as pets—dogs, cats or some kinds of birds. If you keep a dog or a cat as a pet, you must know how to look after them.

A grown-up dog needs two meals a day—not more. And it can eat meat, fish, rice and some other things. Dogs like large bones, but don’t give them chicken bones. Remember to give them much clean water.

A dog should have a clean, dry box for sleeping. Washing it once a week is good for its health. If it is ill, take it to a doctor. A healthy dog will bring you more pleasure.

Be careful if you have a cat. It has two meals a day with some meat of fish. Cats drink a little milk every day. Sometimes you should give them vegetables to eat. Don’t forget that they need clean water to drink.

Take good care of your pets. They will be your good friends. Maybe they can give you some help when you need.
