文章大意:这是一篇新闻报道,主要讲的是田纳西州的T.O. Fuller State Park在众人合作的基础上对被丢弃的轮胎进行废物利用,公园里的一条路就是用废弃轮胎建成的。

1 . T. O. Fuller State Park in Memphis, Tennessee, has been loved for generations and has always been a ground where community has come first. Back in 1938, it was the first park east of the Mississippi river to open for African American visitors. Over 80 years later, the park is continuing its forward-thinking tradition, this time, through a pioneering sustainability project.

A new walking and biking trail has been built through this historic park. Illegally dumped (被丢弃的) tires are not only unpleasant to see, but they’re a dangerous addition to the environment. Rubber, like plastic, is a material that won’t naturally decompose. In a place as hot as Tennessee, these dumped tires often begin to melt and release these harmful gasses into the air. Fortunately, the old tires were sent to Patriot Tire Recycling in Bristol, TN, the only facility in the area that can break down tires in an environmentally sound way. There, the collected tires were safely broken down into the crumble (碎屑) rubber that was eventually used to pave the new trail.

TN State Parks explained how the trail’s construction, which has been in development since 2019, was a joint effort. Officials from the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation, the Tennessee Department of Transportation, the City of Memphis, Shelby County, and Memphis City Beautiful were all involved in funding this recycling project.

These officials named their initiative the “Tires to Trails” project. Workers from these departments, alongside some 450 volunteers, came together to collect over 24, 000 tires that had been illegally dumped in the area around the park to be recycled.

“This is a perfect example of recycling in full circle, collecting dumped material, then converting it into positive use,” David, a leader of the project, said in a statement.

2 . People tend to use trees for papermaking. But maybe electronics (电子) engineers are missing out on something here. “It turns out that two major building blocks of wood have a lot of electrical qualities,” says Magnus Berggren, a professor at Linköping University.

His team has been working to make parts for electronics from the forest. Right now, they’re focusing on two materials of trees. The first material is cellulose, which can make energy. Lignin, the second material, can store that energy, just as a battery does. The team has found when pressed, cellulose can produce electricity.

Some device must then store the electricity until it’s needed. Batteries can do this. But batteries aren’t very green. They have harmful materials. That’s where lignin comes in.

Batteries cause electrons to flow from one place to another, which can produce electricity. In a typical battery, one material must give electrons. The other must accept them. Lignin can do both. A weak acid (酸) encourages lignin to produce electrons. “With a metal wire (金属线) to guide those electrons, you’ll have electricity,” says Berggren.

Berggren’s team use this quality to create its new lignin-based battery. Typical batteries use a metal wire as a path to guide the flow of electrons into or out of the device. But since Berggren wants to make a battery of the forest, he looks for a natural way. Once again, he turns to cellulose.

This natural material can serve as a wire-like path for electrons. To make it work well, Berggren lines them with another chemical known as PEDOT, which isn’t from a tree. But when PEDOT is added to cellulose, they can conduct electricity like a wire. “With a weak acid, now you have a battery,” Berggren says. “And two of its three materials come from the forest.”

Berggren can imagine one day having mobile phone batteries made largely from forest products. Tree-based electronics might also be useful in lighting.

1. What is cellulose used to do in the study?
A.Act as a weak acid.B.Collect rainwater.
C.Produce electricity.D.Make quality paper.
2. Which best describes the new battery?
A.Well-received.B.Eco-friendly.C.Harmful.D.Heavy.
3. What can we expect of tree-based electronics?
A.They may change farming practices.B.They might save a lot of wood.
C.They would serve the elderly.D.They could light the rooms.
4. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.A Green Way to Make and Store EnergyB.An Attempt to Raise Power Production
C.Practical Suggestions on Planting TreesD.Recent Advances in Mobile Phones

4 . Recently, Venetia Berry, an artist in London, counted up the free cotton tote bags that she had accumulated in her closet. There were at least 25. “You get them without choosing,”   Ms. Berry said. Cotton bags have become a means for retailers, brands and supermarkets to telegraph a planet-friendly value - or, at least, to show that the companies are aware of the overuse of plastic in packaging.

So far, so earth-friendly? Not exactly. It turns out the wholehearted embrace of cotton totes may actually have created a new problem.

An organic cotton tote needs to be used 20,000 times to offset its overall impacts or production, according to a 2018 study by the Ministry of Environment and Food Denmark. That is equivalent to daily use for 54 years --- or just one bag. According to that, it all 25 of her tote hags were organic, Ms. Berry would have to live for more than a thousand years.

“Cotton uses pesticides (if it’s not organically grown) and it is so water intensive,” said Maxine Bédar, a director at the New Standard Institute, a nonprofit focused on fashion and sustainability And she has “yet to find a municipal compost( 城市堆肥) that accepts textiles like cotton - something that’s much easier said than done”. Even when a tote does make it to a treatment plant, most dyes (染料) used to print logos onto totes are PVC-based and thus not recyclable: they “have to be cut out of the cloth”, said Christopher Stanev; the co-founder of Evrnu, a seattle- based textile recycling firm. Then there is the issue of turning old cloth into new, which is almost as energy intensive as making it in the first place.

“The cotton tote dilemma”, said Laura Balmond, the manager for the Make Fashion Circular campaign, “is a really good example of unintended consequences of people trying to make positive choices, and not understanding the full landscape”.

1. Why did companies introduce cotton bags?
A.To lower packaging costs.
B.To cater to people’s fashion sense.
C.To shape an eco-friendly brand image.
D.To consume fewer natural resources.
2. What does the underlined word “offset” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Evaluate.
B.Achieve.
C.Enhance.
D.Balance.
3. Which of the following is a problem with cotton bags?
A.Low profitability.
B.Waste management.
C.Water pollution.
D.Lack of recyclability.
4. What is Laura Balmond’s understanding of the promotion of cotton bags?
A.It is a successful story.
B.It fails to win people’s support.
C.It benefits fashion brands.
D.It is a short-sighted decision.

9 . Each year people are crazy about different ceremonies. Many graduation ceremonies look special and different. But for Melody, it looked so unique because of the classmate who graduated alongside her — her grandmother, 75-year-old Pat Ormond. They both went to the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC) and graduated together.

Pat took her first college class 42 years ago. After one semester, she dropped out to move to Chattanooga, where she spent the next several decades working as an accountant and raising a family. While she did take an occasional class at UTC, she says her family continued to encourage her to go back to finish her degree, especially after she retired. She agreed when her granddaughter decided to move to study psychology at UTC after a year at Berea College. They both entered UTC with enough college credits to make graduating together a possibility.

Pat and Melody graduated on November 20 as part of UTC’s 2020 class. The achievement has also made Pat somewhat of a celebrity.

“We are so proud to have graduates like Melody and her grandmother, Pat Ormond, in the UTC class of 2020,” said Steven, UTC Chancellor. “Together, they personify the determination, commitment and love for lifelong learning we encourage in every UTC graduate.”

Pat hopes that she can be an example to other non-traditional college students who want to get their degrees. “Learning never stops,” Pat said. “That’s something that my father taught me when I was young. No matter what you do, learning never stops.” Pat isn’t planning to stop anytime soon. She’s already working on another degree-a bachelor’s degree in history.

Meanwhile, her granddaughter, who is hunting jobs, is interested in getting a master’s degree in clinical psychology so she can become a lawyer. But she says she’s in no rush. Her nanna has taught her that she has plenty of time.
