2 . The story of a 92-year-old book lover in a village of Chongqing has touched many recently. Sun Shiquan has collected more than 7,000 books over the decades and has offered a free local library for residents for years.
He was born in Pipa village in Xiuqi township of Chongqing’s Chengkou county. Being a bookworm as a child, he read all kinds of ancient books including the Four Books and the Five Classics. In the 1950s, he became one of only a handful of local college graduates and later served as a primary and middle school teacher in the county.
Sun said he started to collect books in 1983 and gradually built a diverse collection over more than 40 years. Among his holdings is a precious set known as the Complete Works of Chinese Classics, published during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). It is one of only seven copies in the country.
Wearing glasses and using a magnifying glass, Sun reads for more than three hours every day. Now he has finished reading most of his collection.
Speaking of her father, Sun Ziyu said, “My father has a habit of making notes on each book. He makes a mark whenever he stops reading so that he can carry on reading from where he left off.” Village official Liu Jiao said, “Many children in the village love to visit Sun and listen to his stories.” She said the elderly man has earned respect from the whole village. People call him “Teacher Sun” and children call him “great-grandfather”.
Sun Ziyu said her father also writes poems and prose in his spare time and enjoys reading his works to the family. She said under her father’s influence, family members take the time to read together and exchange views. 3 . I have dreamed of taking a trip to Hawaii since I graduated, but the best thing always needs waiting.
I took a trip with my friends to Haleakala National Park, which lies in Hawaii.
When we arrived at Haleakala National Park, we were advised to watch the early morning sunrise. I was lost in the sightseeing (观光) that afternoon, so I could hardly wait to see the sunrise. The next morning, we all got out of bed very early and got to the seaside at 3 o’clock. In the first half an hour, we imagined how wonderful it would be when the first light came out through the thick clouds and how soft it would be when the light touched our skin, so we waited and waited. However, another half an hour later, I gradually lost my patience since there was nothing but the chilly darkness, and I felt that I was frozen to death. (冻死) But my friends were still extremely cheerful.
Nearly another one hour later, “Amazing!” Judy burst out and we all shouted to welcome the light, which was really unbelievable. Until today, I dare say that it is the most impressive sunrise in my life. However, waiting in the morning darkness is also one memory I can’t forget forever.
Waiting sometimes is really a hard thing for most of us as it needs patience and strong-willed determination (决心) , but what about the result after that? It might turn out to be pleasing and unbelievable. So, it is really worth (值得的) waiting for the best.

4 . I remember that it was a fall morning when the orchestra (管弦乐队) teachers came into Miss Newell’s third-grade classroom. “You have hands for the viola (中提琴),” Miss Ciano told me. I was excited because my hands were finally good for something. I told my parents I wanted to play, and naturally, they agreed.
Since I first touched the viola, I haven’t been able to put it down. Ignoring the difficulty, I am pulled closer to it each day. If you get introduced to it in the right way, it will become your friend for life.
Classical music is truly my best friend. It is the trusted friend of every man, woman and child. Various feelings are expressed in classical music. I discovered that when I was eleven and played a cello concerto (大提琴协奏曲) of Bach in a competition, the first movement was joyful, but the second movement was mysterious and full of pain. From the piece, I learned that music expresses not only feelings, but also sudden mood changes. By listening to classical music, I know that someone else shares these feelings. Since I am lucky enough to be able to play classical music, I am comforted by it when I am upset. It gives me away to escape from my problems for a short period. Classical music can express my joy, sadness and anger.
Now look back at that fall day in the third grade and think how gullible I was for believing that anyone, even music teachers, could tell whether hands were perfect for a certain instrument. I’m certain they told me I had “viola hands” not because they were fortune-tellers (算命师), but because there was a lack of violists in our neighborhood. Classical music is one of the best things that ever happened to mankind.

6 . Ever since the 2012 publication of Cheryl Strayed’s best-selling book, Wild, which records her 1100-mile hike along the Pacific Crest Trail from California to Washington state all by herself, many more people have been preparing their hiking shoes.
Hiking is now the fourth most-popular outdoor activity in the U.S., after running, fishing and biking, according to The Outdoor Foundation’s 2018 Outdoor Participation Report. The report noted that 44.9 million people hit the trails (步道) in 2017, up from 30 million in 2006. The biggest jump in participation came between 2015 and 2016.
Trimble, a government official, says in addition to the “Wild” effect, he believes hiking is increasing in popularity because more people are discovering the nation’s various trail systems and learning about the concept of long-distance hiking. “I also think the Millennials, and even Generation Z, are putting a lot more value on experiences than on money and career advancement,” he says. “Cultural changes have played a role in the number of people getting out on the trails.”
Mike Wollmer is a director of the Ice Age Trail Alliance (IATA), which protects, keeps and advocates for the Ice Age Trail, another one of the 11 National Scenic Trails. Wollmer believes social media has also helped to improve hiking numbers, as it is being used to show the beauty and diversity of U.S. hiking trails, construction projects and more. This is especially true for less famous paths such as the Ice Age Trail, which winds 1150 miles around Wisconsin, presenting the state’s Ice Age landscapes (风景).
The IATA recorded 76 trail completions between the path’s birth in the 1970s and 2012. During the next six years, another 114 people reported trail finishes. The hiking community also created the IATA-specific “Thousand Miler Wanna Bes” Facebook page, aimed at helping people achieve their dream of becoming a “thousand-miler”, a special title the IATA gives to those who have completed the entire trail.

7 . This is one of a series of books that I loved as a child growing up in Hamburg in the sixties. I seem to remember getting them sometimes after unpleasant visits to the dentist! The Petzi books described the adventures of a little bear, who wore spotted jeans and was fond of pancakes, and his exploration of the world together with his friends, a pelican, a penguin and a seal.
I think they may have influenced my way of seeing the world as I still prefer to draw animals with clothes on now! There were also two little characters, a frog and a tortoise, which I loved and is something I still try to do in my own picture books — add things to the drawings that are not in the text.
When I was a teenager I discovered cartoonists and illustrators (插画家) like Edward Gorey, Sempé, Bosc and others, but most of all I loved the art of Tomi Ungerer. A French artist covered a wide range of styles and subjects. I think he was probably the strongest influence on my own work as an illustrator.
His sense of humour, his love for details and the absurd, and the world he creates in his drawings, all apparent in Papa Snap, I found very appealing. And again, animals with clothes! His books from the seventies still seem very fresh to me.
When I discovered the work of William Steig, I was already working as an illustrator. He worked as a cartoonist for the New Yorker all his life and came to writing and illustrating children’s books when he was in his sixties. I love his picture books: Solomon the Rusty Nail, Sylvester and the Magic Pebble, Gorky Rises, Brave Irene — more dressed animals! The wonderful stories and the warmth and emotional precision of his illustrations never fail to touch me. I was delighted when I discovered it in a second hand bookshop on Charing Cross Road.

Atlit Yam
Atlit Yam is an ancient village off the coast of Atlit, Israel. Around 8000 to 9250 years ago, there was a human settlement. The villagers left a series of unconnected walls behind, along with water wells and rectangular (矩形的) buildings. All these objects are now under 26 to 39 feet of water.
Port Royal’s Sunken City
As the sea birds fly, Port Royal, Jamaica is about 15 miles south of Kingston. In the year 1692, Port Royal had a population of somewhere between 6500 and 10000 people. Disaster struck that summer. On June 7, just before noon, an earthquake rocked Port Royal. Then it was hit with huge waves. Around 30 acres of buildings and streets slid into the ocean.
Rome’s “Lost Vegas”
Built on Italy’s northwest coast by the ancient Romans, Baia is often compared to modern-day Las Vegas. It was a seaside city where the rich kept vacation homes. But as volcanos raised the water level, most of Baia slipped beneath the waves. Announced as an underwater archaeological park in 2002, the city’s treasures are now accessible to the public.
The “Atlantis of the East”
In the 1950s, the Chinese government flooded a valley inside Zhejiang Province in order to create Qiandao Lake, an artificial body of water. But a city which was built in the Eastern Han Dynasty (between 25 and 200 AD) known as Shi Cheng had been founded there. Shi Cheng was rediscovered by divers in the year 2001. The underwater city has five entrance gates and many animal sculptures. Travel guides have called this place the “Atlantis of the East”.

10 . There are a number of reasons that can be given as to why children should be taught swimming at a young age. If your children know the basic swimming skills, you can be at peace when your children are near the water. If you are in the process of teaching your children how to swim, then here are some points that you should keep in mind.
♦Help your children pick bathing suits. If your children want to wear a bathing suit and get wet then it is certain that your children will be able to handle the water.
