文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要说明了人类学家可以通过研究早期人类的牙齿来发现他们的饮食,文章介绍了研究开展的过程以及对此进行了举例说明。

1 . If the eyes are the romantic’s window into the soul, then the teeth are an anthropologist’s door to the stomach.

In a study published recently in the journal Science, Peter Ungar of the University of Arkansas and his partner, Matt Sponheimer of the University of Colorado, US, examined the teeth of ancient human beings to find out what they were really eating.

They already knew that different foods cause different marks on teeth. Some cause scratches, while others cause pits(坑). The carbon left on teeth by different foods is also different. Tropical grasses, for example, leave one kind of carbon, but trees and bushes leave another kind because they photosynthesize(进行光合作用)differently.

Traditionally, scientists had looked at the size and shape of teeth and skulls to figure out what early humans ate. Big flat teeth were taken to be signs that they ate nuts and seeds, while hard and sharp teeth seemed good for cutting meat and leaves. But this was proved wrong.

The best example was the Paranthropus(傍人属类人猿), one of our close cousins, some of whom lived in eastern Africa. Scientists used to believe that they ate nuts, fruits and seeds because they had big crests(突起)on their skulls, suggesting that they had large chewing muscles and big teeth. If this had been true, their teeth should have been covered with pits like the surface of the moon. They would also have had a particular type of carbon on their teeth that typically comes from tree products, such as nuts and seeds.

However, when the two scientists studied the Paranthropus, it turned out to have none of these characteristics. The teeth had a different kind of carbon, and were covered with scratches, not pits. This suggested they probably ate grass, not nuts and seeds. It was the exact opposite of what people had expected to find.

Carbon “footprints” give us a completely new and different understanding of what different species ate and the different environments they lived in, which also provide a groundbreaking perspective on the diets and habitats of various species. This method has reshaped our understanding of ancient human diets, challenging previous assumptions based on tooth and skull morphology.

1. Which of the following best explains the underlined sentence?
A.Anthropologists can know the structure of human stomachs by studying their teeth.
B.Anthropologists can find out the diet of early humans by studying their teeth.
C.Anthropologists can learn whether humans were healthy by looking at their teeth.

A.Pits on teeth are caused by eating grass or leaves.
B.Scratches on teeth are caused by eating nuts or seeds.
C.Different foods leave different marks and carbon on teeth.
D.Early humans with hard and sharp teeth at e meat and leaves.
3. Why is the example of the Paranthropus mentioned?
A.To show they had different eating habits from other humans.
B.To prove living environment makes a difference to skull structure.
C.To demonstrate they were one of our close cousins living in eastern Africa.
D.To reveal the size and shape of teeth don’t show accurately what early humans ate.
4. Which structural element does the author mainly use to develop the passage?
A.Cause and effect.
B.Problem and solution.
C.Comparison and contrast.
D.Listing and classification.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文,主要讲述了海狸通过筑坝的方式,帮助保护了受气候变化威胁的河流。

3 . The humble beaver could hold the key to saving our water, according to a new research that has found how their dam building skills protect the rivers threatened by climate change.

The research, done on rivers in Colorado, found the wooden barriers built by beavers raise water level upstream. As it builds up, the water flows into surrounding soils and secondary waterways. These acts separate out extra nutrients and pollutants before water reenters the main channel downstream.

Extreme weather events, such as severe storms, impact water quality in major river systems. Droughts and floods are becoming more frequent, and the scientists have also found they are contributing to an increase in the American be aver in the US, and consequently an explosion of dam building.

The team chose to monitor a 40-kilometer stretch of the East River. They reviewed data on water levels gathered hourly by sensors fixed in the river and the areas along the river.

They also collected water samples, including from below the ground’s surface to monitor nutrient and pollutant levels. The researchers compared water quality along the stretch during a historically dry year, to water quality the following year when water levels were unusually high. They also compared these year-long datasets to water quality during the nearly three- month period, starting in late July 2018, when the be aver dam blocked the river.

The study revealed the dams increased nitrate(硝酸盐)by nearly 50% by increasing the pressure of the water flow upstream 10 times over, which pushed more water out into the surrounding areas. This decrease in nitrates, which are absorbed and digested by tiny organisms in the soil, helped increase the oxygen content and quality in the rivers.

Beavers’ handiwork is responsible for the land they love.

1. What do the wooden barriers created by beavers act as?
A.WaterwaysB.SamplesC.DamsD.Sensors
2. What is the direct result of frequent droughts and floods?
A.More dams emerge on the river.
B.More American beavers appear in the US.
C.More pollutants are removed from the river.
D.More oxygen is created in the river.
3. Why did the researchers collect water samples from below the ground’s surface?
A.To keep an eye on the water quality.B.To compare water quality of the stretch.
C.To reveal the damage caused by floods.D.To save the river from drying up.
4. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Organisms help decrease nitrate.
B.Beavers contribute to climate change.
C.Extreme weather catches researcher’s eyes.

5 . What is a GPA?

A GPA, or Grade Point Average, typically ranging from one to four, is a number reflecting your course performance on average. It’s used by universities to determine whether students meet academic standards and by students to enhance job prospects or secure admission into post-graduate programs.

How to calculate a GPA?

● Determine the letter grade and the number of credit hours for each course you take in a term;

● Translate the letter grade to grade points using your school’s grading system;

● Multiply the grade points by the credit hours for that course;

● Add up all the credit hours for the courses;

6 . To produce the classic clothing, blue jeans, producers rely on indigo dye (靛蓝染料), the only molecule known to provide jeans’ unique, beloved color. While indigo itself naturally comes from a plant, growing demand for blue jeans throughout the 20th century gave rise to synthetic (合成的) indigo, which is now more commonly used.

Indigo is the dye that makes jeans blue, but it doesn’t mix with water. To dye clothes, usually, chemicals are needed to make the color stick to the cloth. But in Denmark, scientists have created a new way to dye clothes using an enzyme (酶), which is a kind of protein that can cause chemical reactions, instead of harmful chemicals. This new method is better for the environment and doesn’t use poisonous stuff.

The chemical process for dyeing blue jeans has persisted for the last century. Workers are exposed to the poisonous chemicals, which also pollute the environment near factories. Waste water from those factories often ends up in waterways, decimating local ecosystems and even dyeing rivers blue.

Ditte Hededam Welner, the study’s lead researcher, says their new enzyme works really well and is strong enough for making lots of jeans without breaking down. This enzyme makes dyeing with indican, which is like indigo, much less harmful to the planet — about 92% better than the old way.

However, the new method doesn’t fix all the environmental problems of making jeans. Making a single pair of jeans uses a lot of water — enough to fill many bathtubs — from growing the cotton to putting the final touches on the jeans.

Even though the new dyeing process is better for the environment, it’s not always easy or cheap to change to it. Welner’s team isn’t sure if jeans companies will find it easy or affordable to switch to this method. It costs a little bit more — just seven cents extra per pair of jeans — to use the enzyme for dyeing. But Welner believes it’s worth it because it’s much better for the environment.

1. Why was synthetic indigo created in the 20th century?
A.It made jeans’ color unique.B.It was easy to dye cloth with it.
C.People liked jeans made from it.D.People were in greater need of jeans.
2. What does the underlined word “decimating” in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Troubling.B.Entering.C.Destroying.D.Defeating.
3. Which is an advantage of the new method?
A.The colour is more beautiful than the synthetic indigo.
B.The market can keep stable goods supplies.
C.Enzyme facilitates the advance of science.
D.The dye is more environmentally friendly.
4. What makes Welner worried about the new method?
A.Production costs.B.Environmental benefits.
C.Water consumption.D.Laborer shortage.

文章大意:这是一篇应用文,主要讲述了由于气候变化,一些杂种动物可能在海洋中变得盛行,文章列举了四种这样的杂种动物。

9 . A study published in the journal Nature lists some hybrid (杂种的) species that could become prevalent (盛行的) in the ocean due to climate change. Here are four of those hybrid species.

“Brolar” bears — Brown bears and polar bears

Evidence of a hybrid species born from brown bears and polar bears has been found in the United States and Canada in the past.

Known as “Polar bears” or “Pizzlies”, they have a mostly white coat, with a brownish hue and a nose that is a cross between a polar bear and a brown or grizzly bear.

They are known to be more suited to warmer temperatures than their Arctic relative, as they do not rely so heavily on sea ice for hunting.

“Narlugas” — Narwhals (独角鲸) and beluga whales (白鲸)

In 1990, a hunter in West Greenland discovered an interesting skull, which appeared to be that of a beluga whale-narwhal hybrid. It wasn’t until 2019 that DNA analysis confirmed that the creature was indeed 54% beluga from its father, and 46% narwhal from its mother.

Experts believe that the hybrid may have been grey in color and possessed a tail like a narwhal but forward flippers like those of a beluga whale.

Hybrids of harp seals and hooded seals Numerous species of Arctic seal are expected to mate (交配) to form hybrid offspring due to diminishing sea ice. This includes a hybrid of the harp seal and hooded seal, which both breed on pack ice of the North Atlantic Ocean and extend into the Arctic Ocean in summer months.

A hybrid animal, found in the Gulf of St. Lawrence in Canada, was formally reported and confirmed by molecular analysis in 1997.

“Harbor-Dall” porpoise (鼠海豚) — Harbor porpoises and Dall’s porpoises

Hybrids of the harbor porpoises and the Dall’s porpoises have been found off the coast of British Columbia, Canada. Harbor porpoises are thought to be in decline due to habitat disturbance, meaning they may turn to other species to mate with.

Experts believe more harbor porpoises will move north as temperatures rise, which will further increase their chances of breeding with Dall’s porpoises.

1. What do the four listed animals have in common?
A.They share the same color.B.They are born due to the polar cold.
C.Their parents come from different species.D.Sea ice is extremely important for them to hunt.
2. Which animal can’t be found in Canada?
A.“Brolar” bears.B.“Narlugas”.
C.Hybrids of harp seals and hooded seals.D.“Harbor-Dall” porpoise.
3. In which section of the Internet can we find this text?
A.Economy.B.Education.C.Entertainment.D.Environment.
