文章大意:本文是一篇议论文。文章主要论述的是人生中有很多的失败,但有时候,只有失败才能给我们带来更好的机会或更大的成功。

1 . “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade (柠檬水).” It is a good saying, but life throws at us more serious problems than lemons, doesn’t it? What do we do when we lose a family member? What do we do when we have been through events that leave us feelings? Can any failure be turned into success?

Most of us realize we can learn one or two things from failure. When we fail, we think, “Well, I won’t try that again! ”or “I won’t trust anyone again! ”But this is not useful learning. It is suggested that we ask challenging questions. For example, “How could I try that again?” There are a lot we can learn and get from failure if we keep asking good questions on how to do better next time.

Failure or pain can be good for developing our character if we choose to face it in a positive way. Our own suffering often makes us understand others better. It can give us wisdom or knowledge to share with others, which can prevent them from similar failure. If we have been hurt by others because of another person’s poor character, it may improve us to be better persons.

Failures can make us experience many things that we didn’t experience before. If you lose your job, it doesn’t mean you lose everything and probably you may get more. As we know, no job often leads to self employment; no job has been the beginning of many highly successful businesses. It is common that we don’t like changing, but change, even unfortunate change, brings new opportunities. Sometimes only failure brings us better opportunities or greater success.

1. The underlined sentence in Paragraph 1 means that ________.
A.any lemons can be made into lemonade
B.problems always bring us lots of trouble
C.problems can never be avoided in our life
D.failure can also be turned into a success
2. The 2nd paragraph mainly tells us that ________.
A.We should learn more when we fail
B.We must be careful to trust anyone
C.We must ask questions when we fail
D.We should deal with failure positively
3. According to the writer, if you were hurt by another person, you should ________.
A.avoid hurting others in the same way
B.find a better way to hurt him bravely
C.try to prevent him from hurting others
D.thank him for making you more perfect
4. What is the best title of the passage?
A.Failure Decides successB.Failure Creates Opportunities
C.Failure Brings EverythingD.Failure Makes a Perfect Person

文章大意:本文为一篇说明文,文章讲述了父母应注意儿童安全的一些方面,且告诉父母应如何保护儿童安全。

2 . There is nothing more important than the safety of our children. Did you know that unintentional injury(意外伤害) is the main cause of death in children under 14 years old and with a third of them happening in the home? One of the top reasons a child under the age of three will visit an emergency room is because of household injuries and sadly, 70% of children who die from unintentional injuries are under the age of four. Every room in the home will have its own set of child safety problems. Two of the main danger zones are the kitchen and the bathroom.

Before I became a young mother, I crawled(爬) around the house on my hands and knees to see things from a child’s perspective(视角). You would be amazed at what you can discover by doing something so simple. We didn’t have toilet covers. A child is top heavy because their heads are bigger than their bodies and can easily fall into the toilet.

You might be surprised with the number of children falling out of windows every year, especially during the summer months. Something as simple as a child leaning against a window screen can result in a serious injury. The best way to prevent this type of injury is by setting up a child safety window guard.

As parents, we do the best we can by providing as much protection as possible to make sure of the safety of children. And as there are so many products(产品) out there to help us do this, there is nothing like good old-fashioned supervision(监护). So, use common sense and products that help to keep your child safe, and you will have provided a safe environment for your children.

1. What’s the main reason for death in children under 14 according to Paragraph 1?
A.Age problems.B.No sense of safety.
C.Danger areas.D.Unexpected injuries.
2. Why did the writer crawl around the house on hands and knees?
A.To cover the toilet slowly.
B.To protect her child carefully.
C.To look for something interesting.
D.To discover danger from a child’s point.
3. What should we do to protect children from falling out of windows?
A.Keep away from a window.B.Place a safety window guard.
C.Move away the window screen.D.Lean(倚) against the window firmly.
4. What’s the last paragraph mainly about?
A.Tips on keeping children safe.B.Products for children.
C.Growth speed of children.D.Ways to look after children.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要讲的是决定蔬菜食用效果的一些影响因素以及推荐食用蔬菜的方法。

4 . By now, most people know they should be eating more vegetables. But are there ways to get more from the vegetables you already eat? A research shows that when it comes to vegetables, it’s not only how much we eat, but also how we prepare them, that decides the vitamins and other nutrients that enter our body.

Many studies show that people who eat lots of vegetables have less heart disease, and eye problems and even cancer. But raw vegetables are not always best. The researchers found that 198 Germans who eat raw food were short of lycopene, the matter found in tomatoes and other red vegetables. “There is an idea that raw foods are always going to be better,” says Steven K. Clinton, a professor at Ohi o State University. “For fruits and vegetables, sometimes a little bit of cooking can be helpful.”

A number of factors decide how the vegetables do good to people’s health before they reach the table, including where and how they were grown and stored before being bought. No single cooking way is best. Some nutrients are easily lost in cooking if they are cooked in different ways.

Vitamins C and B are often lost. In January, another report said that boiling was better for carrots than frying or serving them raw. Frying was the worst way to cook.

What cooked with the vegetables can also be important? When the vegetables were cooked with fat, the diners can get more nutrients. Fat can also make the taste of vegetables better, meaning that people will eat more of them. Putting on some other things that make it taste better—a little salt—can make the food taste better.

1. The writer mainly wants to tell us that ________.
A.people should eat more vegetables
B.the way people eat vegetables is important
C.eating vegetables is good for us
D.how much vegetables one should eat
2. The people who eat the raw vegetables for a long time will ________.
A.have the eyes problemsB.have heart disease
C.be in need of lycopeneD.hate eating tomatoes
3. The following decide how the vegetables do good to people EXCEPT ________.
A.the place where the vegetables are grown
B.the way how the vegetables are stored
C.the way how the vegetables are prepared
D.the price at which the vegetable are sold
4. From the last paragraph, we can know ________.
A.It’s better to cook vegetables with fat
B.the more fat in the cooking, the fewer vegetables people will eat
C.It’s better to cook the vegetables without salt
D.the fat will increase the nutrition of the vegetables

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章讲述了维持人际关系的关键因素。

6 . Good relationship are definitely good sources of happiness in life. We all want happy relationships but if we do not keep that relationship alive, it can also be one of the most distraught things in life. There may be no hard and fast rules in making good relationships, as each of us has different preferences and points of view as to what is a great relationship. The following are some major key players in making relationships work.

It is often said that building good relationship is all about communication. Good communication indeed governs a good relationship—knowing the right thing to say, when to say it, how to say it, and accepting some things that are better left unsaid. I personally think communication must be broadened because relationships involve more decisions to make. From study to work, from money to entertainment and even in things about yourself or about your friends that you do not know, communication is necessary in these aspects of the relationships.

Of course, being with someone is not saying that you totally agree with him or her all the time. You and your friends come from different family backgrounds, raised in different environment so there may be disagreement here and there. However, it is important in making relationship work to express disagreements without pushing the relationship to end. Again, good communication and learning to compromise(妥协) at times are necessary.

As relationships last longer, you may also discover things about you and your friends that you may not have known before. Therefore supporting each other on both your “hidden selves” can also make a good relationship.

Love is an important aspect of building relationships and for me, I always believe that love needs open communication, respect, support and understanding each other in making relationships work.

1. The underlined word “distraught” in Paragraph 1 probably means _________.
A.interestingB.surprisingC.funnyD.upset
2. To communicate well with people, you should know that _________.
A.supporting each other in anything helps build a good relationship
B.a white lie is necessary sometimes
C.compromises are necessary at any time
D.your friends need to have the same backgrounds with you
3. According to the text, which of the following are NOT important for a good relationship?
A.Communication.B.Support.
C.Hidden selves.D.Love.
4. What would be the best title for the text?
A.Forbidden Rules in Building Good Relationships.
B.Keys to Making Relationships Work.
C.Different Opinions on Good Relationships.
D.The Importance to Express Disagreements.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。主要介绍了世界上几个不同地方的人不同的指路方式。

7 . Traveling without a map in different countries. I find out about different ways of giving directions every time I ask “How can I get to the post office?”

Foreign tourists are often puzzled in Japan because most streets there don’t have name signs. In Japan, people use landmarks (标志性建筑) to give directions instead of street names. For example, the Japanese will say to travelers, “Go straight down to the comer. Turn left at the big hotel and go past a fruit market. The post office is across from the bus stop.”

People in Los Angeles, the US, have no idea of distance on the map; they measure distance by time, not miles. “How far away is the post office?” you ask. “Oh,” they answer, “It’s about five minutes from here.” You don’t understand completely. “Yes, but how many miles away is it, please?” To this question you won’t get an answer, because most probably they don’t know it themselves.

People in Greece sometimes do not even try to give directions because tourists seldom understand the Greek language. Instead, a Greek will often say, “Follow me.” Then he’ll lead you through the streets of the city to the post office.

Sometimes a person doesn’t know the answer to your question. What happens in the situation? A New Yorker might say. “Sorry, I have no idea.” But in Yucatan, Mexico, no one answers “I don’t know.” People there believe that “I don’t” is impolite. They usually give an answer, but often a wrong one. So a tourist can get lost very easily in Yucatan! However, one thing will help you reach your destination everywhere in the world. It’s body language.

1. Which of the following is probably an example of Japanese directions?
A.“The post office is at Street Kamira.”
B.“Turn right at the hospital and go past a school.”
C.“The post office is about five minutes from here.”
D.“Go south two miles. Turn west and then go another mile.”
2. Why don’t people in Los Angeles give directions in miles?
A.They prefer to lead you the way.
B.They prefer to use body language.
C.They use landmarks to give directions instead of distance.
D.They often have no idea of distance measured by miles.
3. How do Greeks give directions?
A.Using street names.B.Leading the way.
C.Using landmarks.D.Giving people a wrong direction.
4. According to the last paragraph, we can learn that ______.
A.people in Mexico know street names well
B.body language makes you get lost in Yucatan
C.people in Mexico prefer to use body language
D.people in Yucatan sometimes give wrong directions
