1 . When I started practicing martial arts (武术) back in high school, I did it only for extra marks in the College Entrance Examination. But the actual benefits (益处) turned out to be much more than I had expected. After hours of practice every evening, I felt physically exhausted but mentally relaxed, gaining a sense of inner peace. So I carried it on and turned it into a hobby.
Although martial arts have been seen by some people as self-defense (自我保护) skills that can be used in real fight and some of the moves are indeed part of modern boxing, I see them mostly as non-aggressive (非攻击性的) sports that can benefit both physical and mental health. They are ideal for today’s fast-paced society. I find the martial arts exercises relaxing after long hours of work and helpful in removing anxiety and stress.
One of the features of Chinese martial arts is that they are closely related to other aspects of Chinese culture, such as medicine and philosophy (哲学). Practicing martial arts can help one better understand ancient Chinese wisdom.
As a martial arts lover, I find martial arts cheering, fun and exciting. They have had an effect on my social skills and have improved my health and social well-being. Apart from this, I have observed that martial arts play an important role in our daily lives as they equip one with the necessary self-defense skills.
Lately, many parts around the world have been in poor order, and in most cases, the victims are women and youngsters. The victims are usually in a disadvantaged position as most of them have little or no self-defense skill. It can therefore be useful for people to learn and practice martial arts to be able to physically defend themselves.
Martial arts are also convenient as a means of entertainment (娱乐) and are beneficial not only for keeping good health but also for self-defense.

When he was a boy, Marco was so shy. He always hid behind his hair, which he wore long around his face and cars. To make it worse, Marco was naturally shorter than the other kids. And because his good marks had allowed him to skip to the higher grade, he was younger than everyone else. This added nothing to his already low self-confidence.
Marco’s father was so busy with his work that Marco felt that his father had little time for him.
Except for his demands for excellent performances in school, communication didn’t exist. It seemed to Marco the only time his dad ever spoke to him was to be demanding or critical. Therefore, Marco sank further into his low self-confidence and felt unappreciated, depressed and confused.
One day his father, already tired after a long day, tripped over (被绊倒) Marco’s bike in the garage. He put the blame on Marco’s not placing the bike in the right way. Hearing this, Marco couldn’t bear and shouted to his father: “No matter how hard I tried, I could never do anything right!”Marco ran to his room angrily and sadly, leaving his father standing frozen there for a long time.
Two days later, his aunt called him. She said she had just seen some young teenagers participate in a public speaking contest. She thought he should give it a try. She told him she firmly believed he could perform on stage like the other kids, since she had seen his humorous performance for the family at Christmas.
Marco was extremely shocked. Him? On stage? In a public speaking contest? To agree would be contrary to his entire shy personality. But Aunt Ginette was so confident and seemed really serious. Feeling her strong belief, Marco went against everything he had ever done or felt, and agreed to enter the contest. All that winter, Marco tried his best to practice. He was taken by an energy he never felt before. However, all this seemed to bring no changes to his father. His father just feared it would take away from his homework time and impact his marks.

4 . We all show more interest in watching new, unknown sports during the Olympics. Curling, trampolining...and there might be one more—cheer-leading, competitive or All-Star cheer-leading to be exact.
I am certain that you will love it: Teams of up to 35 cheerleaders, working together like a well-oiled machine, carry out challenging body movements during an exciting two-and-a-half-minute routine. Watching these highly-skilled young girls producing an imaginative routine live in the arena is exciting, and slightly terrifying, isn’t it? Absolutely. How about slow-motion replays of remarkable movements on the small screen? Yes, please. You will never be disappointed to view them.
Some people argue that high risk is the sport’s major problem, but in fact, many Olympic events are also dangerous. It is not uncommon for a flyer (the athlete thrown into the air) to fall during cheer-leading. But don’t worry—one of the first things they are taught is how to fall and catch in the safest way possible.
Cheer-leading will not be a one-horse race. Since the sport originated in North America, it’s natural that the first Olympic medals would be contested in its “homeland” (in Los Angeles, USA, 2028). But there are many countries that will happily challenge Team USA for the medal. Team England has historically been a strong competitor. They have earned medals at the last three World Championships. And other powerful cheer nations such as Canada, Finland and China have presented performances at the top level. In 2019, it was allowed to apply to become part of the Olympic Games sports program. Now the International Cheer Union has more than 100 national organizations and almost 4.5 million athletes. The widespread international participation has made it easier for the sport to take the next steps towards a place at the Summer Games. So Los Angeles 2028 is not beyond the bounds of possibility.

8 . Five tips for safe running
We all know that exercise is good for our health. But some kinds of exercise may be better than others. Running, for example, may help to protect against heart disease and other health problems.
Running is good exercise, but it can be hard on the body.
Take it easy. Do not run too much, too soon or too fast. Most people get running injuries (受伤) when they push themselves too bad. The body needs time to get used to increase in distance or speed.
Listen to your body. Most running injuries do not come unexpectedly (意外地).
They may include body aches, sore muscles (肌肉) and pain that does not go away.
Take good notes. Take time after each run to write down what you did and how you felt. Look for patterns, things that happen over again. These notes will help you find the best exercise for you.
Cross train. As we said earlier, running is hard on your body. So physical fitness experts suggest some form of cross training to improve muscle balance and to help you stay injury free. They say, besides running, swimming, yoga, and riding a bicycle are good exercises.
