文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要说明了研究发现运动可以帮助大脑更好地发育,文章介绍了研究开展的经过以及对不同年龄段的不同好处。

1 . Are you preparing for a big test? If so, you may want to play some basketball in between hitting the books. Doctors are starting to find more and more information that suggests a connection between exercise and brain development. Judy Cameron, a scientist at Oregon Health and Science University, studies brain development. According to her research, it seems that exercise can make blood vessels (血管), including those in the brain, stronger and more fully developed. Dr Cameron claims this allows people who exercise to concentrate better. She says, “ While we already know that exercise is good for the heart, exercise can really cause physical changes in the brain.”

The effects of exercise on brain development can even be seen in babies. Babies who do activities that require a lot of movement and physical activity show greater brain development than babies who are less physically active. With babies, even a little movement can show big results.

Older people can beef up (加强) their brain as well. Scientists from 11 universities studied a group of seniors ranging in age from 70 to 79. Their study showed a short-term memory increase of up to 40 per cent after exercising just three hours a week. The exercise does not have to be very difficult, but it does have to increase the heart rate. Also, just like the motion for babies, exercise for seniors should involve some complexity (复杂). Learning some new skills or motions, such as with yoga or Tai Ji, helps open up memory paths in the brain that may not have used for a long time.

For most people, any type of physical activity that increases the heart rate is helpful. The main goal is to increase the brain’s flow of blood. And your brain can benefit from as little as three hours of exercise a week.

3 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It was the last game of the season. I had been playing soccer all summer. I really enjoyed running around with the other players in my bright blue uniform, chasing the black and white ball across the grassy field. As much as I tried, though, I still had not scored one single goal.

“Don’t give up,” said my coach. Before each game, we had a practice session. He showed me and my team how to pass the ball to each other and take shots at the goal. I was pretty good at passing the ball, but even during practices, I couldn’t kick the ball past the goalkeeper. I wondered if I should quit soccer for good.

“Don’t give up,” said my teammates. Some had been playing soccer for a couple of years, and some were new to the game just like me. “You just need to keep trying and you will get better.” So I stayed on the team and did my best.

The break was over and the judge blew his whistle to start the game again. The two teams walked back onto the field, both determined to win. I bent, tied up my shoelace and heard my coach whisper in my ear. “Look for an opportunity to get the ball. You can do it.”

I stood up and took a deep breath. Even if I didn’t get one goal all summer, I knew that I had tried my best. That was something to be proud of. So I smiled at my coach and headed to my position. The whistle blew, and the game continued.

The score was tied (平局) with one goal each. The yellow team was pretty good, but my blue team was fast. Our ponytails (马尾辫) jumped up and down as we ran, with many feet kicking wildly at the ball when it came near us. I was off to the side when the ball headed my way. I ran over to it and kicked it.

I watched it land right in front of a girl on the yellow team who expertly stopped it and sent it back in the other direction. I sighed.

1. 续写词数应为150左右;

I watched the ball go back and forth between the players.

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。文章讲述了一位87岁的老奶奶,从72岁开始迷上滑雪,一直坚持并能取得好成绩的故事。

7 . As this year’s ski season got underway, Liu Zhihua joined the crowd at a ski resort and glided fluently down the piste(滑雪道). With only a brief break, she took a quick turn, got onto a chairlift and was ready for another round.

Liu has become a star at the resort in Urumqi. Dressed in her baby blue suit and white helmet, she blends in with the other ski enthusiasts. But in fact, she is the resort’s oldest skier, at age 87. Though a fluent skier now, Liu only took up the sport when she was 72. Up until then, like many old people, she would spend her days taking care of her grandchildren, watching TV or playing mahjong. Encouraged by her children, Liu got on the piste for the very first time in 2007.

“The first day was not easy. My waist and legs ached. But in the following days, I was able to walk on the skis,” Liu recalls. “After conquering the fear of falling, I became increasingly interested in it and got addicted as time passed.” Starting on the beginner slopes, Liu gradually advanced to intermediate runs, and has even got onto the advanced ones. “I’ve taken part in a competition twice. I didn’t do it for a medal. Finishing the competition without falling is enough for me,” she says. When asked about the difficulties she had encountered during her years of skiing, Liu recalls that she fell over while going down a slope due to a lack of experience. “But skill comes from practice. Just get used to it,” she says.

For Liu, skiing is also a way to keep herself young and lively. Despite being the oldest ski enthusiast at the resort, she thinks she is just as vigorous as younger skiers. “No one can tell your age when everyone’s in a ski suit and with snow caps and goggles on,” says Liu with a smile. “Health and happiness are the two things that doing sports. has brought to me,” she says. “I don’t think age has much to do with my mindset. 8 . Last night was the last game for my eight-year-old son’s soccer team. It was the final quarter. The score was two to one, and my son’s team in the lead. Parents surrounded the playground, offering encouragement.

With less than ten seconds remaining, the ball suddenly rolled in front of my son’s teammate, Mickey O’Donnell. With shouts of “Kick it!” echoing (回响) across the playground, Mickey turned around and gave it everything he had. All around me the crowd cheered. Mickey had scored!

Then there was silence. Mickey had scored all right, but in the wrong goal, ending the game in a tie. For a moment there was a total hush. You see, Mickey has Down’s syndrome (唐氏综合征) and for him there is no such thing as a wrong goal. All goals were celebrated by a happy hug from Mickey. He had even been known to hug the opposing players when they scored.

The silence was finally broken when Mickey, his face filled with joy, hugged my son tightly and shouted, “I scored! I scored! Everybody won! Everybody won!” For a moment I held my breath, not sure how my son would react. I need not have worried. I watched, through tears, as my son threw up his hand in the classic high-five salute (敬礼) and started chanting, “Way to go Mickey! 文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍的是帮助养成可以坚持的锻炼习惯的四个技巧。

10 . You have to be a marathon runner to get meaningful health benefits from exercise. And that kind of thinking can actually be a block to getting movement.    1     Here are four tips to help you start an exercise habit that you can stick with. It’s a lot easier than you think.

Everything counts when it comes to movement.

The expert guideline says we should be getting 150 minutes of moderately intense (中等强度的) activity each week. But what counts as a moderately intense activity? “    2    Activities in that range include cleaning the floor, or dancing to some music,” says Micnelle Segar, a sport and health psychologist at the University of Michigan.

Exercise is not all or nothing.

Think of starting an exercise habit like climbing a ladder. Start at the bottom and work your way up. Even a short period of exercise has value, and it can help you build up your fitness level over time. So start small. Try standing up from your chair and sitting back down repeatedly. Or just take a five-minute walk.    3

Focus on how exercise makes you feel.

Long-term benefits like weight loss often take time to achieve. And it can be disheartening when you don’t see results quickly.    4    “There are so many positives that happen when you move,” says Segar. “It brings you much energy. When you feel better, that often benefits you.”

    5

If weightlifting in a crowded gym gives you anxiety, try getting a set of weights for home or following workout videos on YouTube or riding a bike in the park. Keep trying different types of exercise until you find an activity that makes you happy.

A.Find a workout partner.
B.Basically, all movement counts.
C.Figure out the exercise that fits you.
D.What will you do to break the habit?
E.So what does count and where do you begin?
F.Starting small can help you develop an exercise habit.
G.Instead, focus on immediate payoffs like improved energy level.
