Sport is not only physically challenging, but can also be mentally challenging. Criticism from coaches, parents and other teammates, as well as pressure to win can create too much anxiety or stress for young athletes. Stress can be physical, emotional, or psychological and research has indicated that it can lead to burnout. Burnout has been described as dropping or quitting of an activity that was at one time enjoyable.
The early years of development are critical years for learning about oneself. The sport setting is one where valuable experiences can take place. Young athletes can, for example, learn how to cooperate with others, make friends, and gain other social skills that will be used throughout their lives. Coaches and parents should be aware, at all times, that their feedback to youngsters can greatly affect their children. Youngsters may take their parents and coaches’ criticisms to heart and find faults in themselves.
Coaches and parents should also pay attention that youth sport participation does not become work for children. The outcome of the game should not be more important than the process of learning the sport and other life lessons. In today’s youth sport setting young athletes may be worrying more about who will win instead of enjoying themselves and the sport. Following a game many parents and coaches focus on the outcome and find faults with youngsters’ performances. Positive support should be provided regardless of the outcome. Research indicates that positive support motivates and has a greater effect on learning than criticism. Again, criticism can create high levels of stress, which can lead to burnout.
1. An effective way to prevent the burnout of young athletes is_____________.
A.to make sport less competitive
B.to increase their sense of success
C.to reduce their mental stress
D.to make sport more challenging
2. According to the passage, sport is positive for young people in that_____________.
A.it can help them learn more about society
B.it enables them to find faults in themselves
C.it can provide them with valuable experiences
D.it teaches them how to set realistic goals for themselves
3. Many coaches and parents are in the habit of criticizing young athletes_____________.
A.believing that criticism does good to their early development
B.without realizing criticism may destroy their selfconfidence
C.in order to make them remember life’s lessons
D.so as to put more pressure on them
4. According to the passage parents and coaches should_____________.
A.pay more attention to letting children enjoy sport
B.help children to win every game
C.train children to cope with stress
D.enable children to understand the positive aspect of sport

6 . Beach volleyball(沙滩排球) is one of those sports that can be an exciting game to play and watch. It’s really easy, and all you need is sand, a net and a group of people, of any age or fitness level, who want to have fun.

Beach volleyball can be played with as few as two people in each team, making a total of four people. However, if you are less skilled and experienced in the game, it will be easier to play with a larger team. The more players you have, the less ground each person will be responsible for covering and the more time they will have to recover between shots. If you only have a few players, each of you will get a lot of running for the ball after each volley(截球). If you are looking for a relaxing, fun, low-key experience, choose larger teams.

Beach volleyball is similar to regular volleyball in its rules. However, even experienced volleyball players do not realize how much more difficult it is to run and jump on sand. Since it is harder to move quickly on sand than a hard surface, play will be much slower than regular volleyball on a court. When an athlete trains for beach volleyball, he will focus on building lower body strength(力量) as well as upper body strength. Strengthening his legs is extremely important. This improves the player’s ability to move quickly and accurately on sand despite the resistance. The ability to jump high and land without injury is necessary for beach volleyball players.

Whether you are in it for the competition, or just to have a great time with your friends, beach volleyball can be extremely exciting and fun. You may start out with friends and may soon fall in love with the sport.

1. When playing beach volleyball, in which of the following situation will you feel most relaxed?

8 . Parent fans, both dads and mums, are shaming British football with their bad behaviour. Hundreds of junior soccer matches had to be abandoned last season because parent fans were swearing or even fighting on the touchline. At schools and clubs across the UK, hundreds of more matches also had to be called off for the same reason.

Reports tell of abuse at referees(裁判), players and coaches and fight breaking out on the touchline.

Enough is enough Peter Wright, a keen referee of junior soccer, finally hung up his boots last season. He decided to walk away for good. He said “Every week I have had to take abuse and I’ve had enough of it.”

“Parents’ behaviour is reducing many school teachers, referees, coaches and volunteers to despair.”

The kids are suffering Jim Peter, a referee, said, “We are getting desperate and the kids are suffering.” He described the way spectators(观众)behave asabysmaland getting worse year by year. The big question is why so many parents shame their children in this way. Aggressive Behavior Contracts may have to be introduced to stop the violence and abuse. If not, the game will suffer.

Sign up to good conduct Last season players and parents were made to sign a new good behavior contract. “If a parent breaks the contract, I take his or her child off the pitch and get him or her to explain why I have done so to the child,” said Marc Nash, Wallsend’s assistant leader.

“The next step is to ban both the parent and the child, but happily, so far this has not been necessary.”

1. A number of junior soccer matches were abandoned last season because      .
A.players abused spectators in the matches
B.parent fans swore and fought outside the pitch
C.school teachers persuaded the government to call them off

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。本文叙述了电影中的邦德让跑酷运动风靡全球,它既是对人体能力极限的挑战,也是对人生意志与自由的追求。短文告诉我们跑酷的理念是决心和自由。
9 .
“Our aim is to take our art to the world and make people understand what it is to move,” said David Belle, the founder of parkour (跑酷).
Do you love running? It is a good exercise, yet many people find it boring. But what if making your morning jog a creative one? Like jumping from walls and over gaps, and ground rolls? Just like the James Bond in the movie Casino Royale? Bond jumps down from a roof to a windowsill and then runs several blocks over obstacles on the way. It is just because of Bond’s wonderful performances that the sport has become popular worldwide.
Yes, that’s parkour, an extreme street sport aimed at moving from one point to another as quickly as possible, getting over all the obstacles in the path using only the abilities of the human body. Parkour is considered an extreme sport. As its participants dash around a city, they may jump over fences, run up walls and even move from rooftop to rooftop.
Parkour can be just as exciting and charming as it sounds, but its participants see parkour much more than that.
Overcoming all the obstacles on the course and in life is part of the philosophy (理念) behind parkour. This is the same as life. You must determine your destination, go straight, jump over all the barriers as if in parkour and never fall back from them in your life, to reach the destination successfully. A parkour lover said, “I love parkour because its philosophy has become my life, my way to do everything.”
Another philosophy we’ve learnt from parkour is freedom. It can be done by anyone, at any time, anywhere in the world. It is a kind of expression of trust in yourself that you earn energy and confidence.
1. Parkour has become popular throughout the world because of .
A.its founder, David BelleB.the film, Casino Royale
C.its risks and tricksD.the varieties of participants
2. The underlined word “obstacles” in Paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to “ ”.

3. Which of the following is true of parkour?

C.It needs special training.D.It is a team sport.
4. As its participants move around a city, .
A.they can ask for helpB.they may choose to escape
C.they should run to extremesD.they must learn to survive
5. Which of the following is the philosophy of parkour?
A.Sports and extremes.B.Excitement and popularity.
C.Dreams and success.D.Determination and freedom.

10 . Thousands of people living in the Chinese capital will celebrate the start of the Chinese New year by heading for the ski resorts (滑雪场). Never mind that Beijing’s dry weather seldom produces snow. It is cold enough in winter for snow-making machines             to make a covering for the hills north to the capital. And the rapid growth of a pleasure-seeking middle class has formed the basis for this new craze(热潮).
Since Beijing’s first ski resort was opened ten years ago, the sport has enjoyed astonishing increase. There are now more than a dozen resorts. Clothes markets in the city have added bright colored ski suits to their winter collections. Mr. Wei, a             manager of a newly-opened ski resort in Beijing, sees the growth of an industry that could soon lead Chinese to head for the ski resorts of Europe. In recent years, ski resorts offering natural snow have opened in China. But many are in faraway             areas of the country and can’t really match the equipment and services of some ski resorts in Europe.
Beijing’s skiing craze is partly a result of the recent increase in private (私有的) cars. This has led to the growth of a leisure industry in the capital’s suburbs (郊区), which until the late-1990s were unreachable to ordinary people. According to Mr. Wei, about 40% of the visitors to his resort come in their own cars. The rest are bused in by schools, businesses or government offices.
The problem is making money. Starting ski resorts requires quite a lot of money; hiring land from the local government, preparing the hills, buying snow machines, making sure there are enough water and electricity to run them, and buying ski equipment             for hiring out to customers.
The ski resort where Mr. Wei works cost nearly $4 million to set up. And as so often in China when someone comes up with a good idea, many others rush in and price wars break out. Beijing now offers some of the cheapest ski training classes in the             world, though with most people rather new to the sport, expecting a few more doing the same job.
1. What does this text mainly talk about?
A.Convenience for skiers brought about by private cars.
B.Skiing as a new way of enjoying one's spare time.
C.Things to be considered when starting a ski resort.
D.A sudden increase of ski training classes in Beijing.
2. Why are some Chinese likely to go skiing in Europe?
A.To visit more ski areas.
B.To ski on natural snow.
C.For a large collection of ski suits.
D.For better services and equipment.
3. The underlined words “leisure industry” in Paragraph 3 refer to
A.transport to ski resorts
B.production of family cars
C.business of providing spare time enjoyments
D.part-time work for people living in the suburbs
4. What is the main problem in running a ski resort?
A.Difficulty in hiring land.
B.Lack of business experience.
C.Price wars with other ski resorts
D.Shortage of water and electricity.
