2 . It’s cold and dark outside, and your bed is so warm and comfortable. Going for a run seems like such a bad idea. But before you hide your running shoes, it might be worth giving that crazy idea a go.
According to The Huffington Post, an outdoor run in winter, as opposed to one on a treadmill (跑步机), burns more calories because the body is working hard to regulate its core temperature. Furthermore, research shows that race times are faster in cold weather than in warmer temperatures—and quicker runs burn more calories. Similarly, cold weather also makes the heart work harder to distribute blood through the body, making that vital muscle even stronger.
Outdoor exercise also turns up your energy and rids you of the stress and depression that build up every day. The heat and humidity in summer can drag you down and tire you faster, but cold weather is refreshing. It adjusts you to your surroundings, making you feel alive.
Of course, the threat of smog in some built-up areas is a further hurdle to winter exercise. Heart attacks, strokes, lung cancer and asthma are all dangers of running in smog. The combination of air pollution and exercise increases the potential problems. If you do choose to run outside on smoggy days, take a path in a park or residential area to avoid car exhaust (废气), and go early in the morning, before rush hour. But staying inside on smoggy days and waiting for the next clear day to run is best.

5 . Is there a way to turn back the clock on your age? A new study says yes. Exercise can make you look younger. At least it can lower your fitness age—that is the measure of how well your body works.
A study of athletes in the National Senior Games found that their fitness age was more than 20 years younger than their chronological age. The games took place in the Midwestern state of Minnesota.
Tony Diamond took part in the games. Every morning he went to a local park and walked fast for an hour. Then, the retired navy captain ran for an hour.
Two or three times a week, he went to a gym for muscle(肌肉) training. Mr. Diamond won three medals at the 2015 National Senior Games.
“My current age is 86 years old, and my fitness age is 44. I think I am in such good physical condition because I do a lot of exercise during my life. I have been exercising since I was a little boy,” said Mr. Diamond.
“I'm 62 years old and my fitness results showed that I was 32 years,” said Ms White.
Ms. White and Mr. Diamond are some of the 5,000 Senior Games participants who took part in the fitness age study.
Pamela Peeke was an assistant professor of medicine at the University of Maryland. She worked on the study with Ulrik Wisloff at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. Mr Wisloff developed a fitness calculator.
An online calculator is available for anyone to use for free. Ms. Peeke says there are benefits from attending this test.
The National Senior Games take place every two years. They are the competition for athletes older than 50. The games include a variety of sports.

6 . The Olympic flame:
The Olympic flame is a symbol carried over from the ancient Olympics, where a flame burned at the altar (神坛) of Zeus throughout competition. It was finally reintroduced at the 1924 Amsterdam Games, and again burned in 1932.
Carl Diem, chairman of the organizing committee for the 1936 Berlin Games, proposed that the flame be lit in Greece and transported to Berlin via a torch relay. The idea was adopted, and continued at every Olympic Games since 1952.
The flame is lit at the ancient site of Olympia by the natural rays of the sun reflected off a curved mirror. It is lit at a ceremony by women dressed in robes resembling those worn in ancient times, who then pass it to the first relay runner.
Olympic motto:
“Citius, altius, fortius” is a Latin phrase meaning “swifter, higher, stronger”, which Baron de Coubertin borrowed from Father Henri Martin Dideon of Paris. Dideon was headmaster of Arcueil College, and used the phrase to describe the athletic achievements of students at the school. He had previously been at the Albert Le Grand school, where the Latin words were carved in stone above the main entrance.

9 . I have read with interest the opinion of one woman who attended a high school basketball game at Three Oaks and came away thinking the students were disrespectful. I have a very different point of view. Respect does not equal quiet, although a certain generation of people would disagree. Respect is a deep admiration for someone or something because of their abilities or achievements and a regard for the wishes and traditions of others.
In my opinion, the students at Three Oaks High School were the very picture of respect. They brought their team and school spirit to show their admiration for their basketball team. This is something that is desperately lacking in many schools — SPIRIT. I am so happy to say it is alive at Three Oaks. They cheered and made noise in a gymnasium, they jumped up and down when their team scored, they groaned when they made mistakes, but kept the team's spirits up by cheering, even when it was evident, they were going to lose. They kept the tradition of cheering and respect by showing due regard to a parent who came over and spoke to them about jumping too far onto the court. They listened and followed his instructions. He also happened to be the coach of another team whose fans were doing nothing.
These kids were doing what they were supposed to do, in a place they were supposed to do it. It was not a library, or a mall; it was a sports match. I would ask the lady who wrote the letter to the editor if she has been to any professional sporting events? I remember watching a Super Bowl I a few years ago and the quarterback could hardly make his calls heard to the guy standing right in front of him. You know what he said about it later, that it was amazing to have the fans cheering so loud.
I wish both these teams the best of luck. It was an amazing game. Even though we lost, we left with our spirits high, ready for the next time our teams me. It is going to be another great game of basketball.
