1 . It’s a popular belief that a fish’s memory lasts for only seven seconds. It may seem sad to think that they don’t remember what they’ve eaten or where they’ve been, and they don’t identify you or any of their friends -- every moment in their life would be like seeing the world for the first time.
But don’t be so quick to feel sorry for them. A new study has found that fish have a much better memory than we used to think. In fact, certain species of fish can even remember events from as long as 12 days ago. In the study, researchers from Mac Ewan University in Canada trained a kind of fish called African cichlids to go to a certain area of their tank to get food. They then waited for 12 days before putting them back in the tank again. Researchers used computer software to monitor the fish’s movements. They found that after such a long break the fish still went to the same place where they first got food. This suggested that they could remember their past experiences.
In fact, scientists had been thinking for a long time that African cichlids might have a good memory. An earlier study showed that they behaved aggressively(挑衅地)in front of certain fish, perhaps because they remembered their past “fights”. But until the latest findings, there was no clear evidence.
Just as a good memory can make our lives easier, it also plays an important part when a fish is trying to survive in the wild. “If fish are able to remember that a certain area contains safe food, they will be able to go back to that area without putting their lives at risks,” lead researcher Trevor Hamilton told Live Science.
For a long time, fish were placed far below chimpanzees, dolphins and mice on the list of smart animals. But this study has given scientists a new understanding of their intelligence.

2 . “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” Eleanor Roosevelt once said. If we want to accomplish anything in life, let us remember that we should never give up.
Viennese-born composer Frederick Loewe, whom we remember from his musical scores that include My Fair Lady, Gigi and Camelot, was not always famous. He learned to play the piano with the great masters of Europe and achieved huge success as a musician and composer in his early years.
But when he immigrated to the United States, he failed as a pianist. For a while he tried other types of work. But he never gave up his dream and continued to play the piano and write music. During those years, he could not always afford to make ends meet by playing the piano.
One day, bent over the keyboard, he heard nothing but the music that he played with inspiration. When he finished and looked up, he was surprised to find that he had an audience—three men who were seated on the floor. They said nothing and made no movement toward the piano. Instead they dug into their pockets, took out all the money they had, placed it on the piano and walked out, empty-handed. Deeply touched by the beauty of his music, these men recognized excellence and responded to it.
Whatever you do, try your best. If what you do is worth doing and if you believe that who you are is of value, then you cannot afford to be content with mediocrity (平庸). When you choose the path of excellence through this life, you will bring out the best in yourself and receive the best it can offer in return.

3 . A well-dressed man entered a famous jewelry shop. He explained that he wished to buy a pearl(珍珠)for his wife’s birthday. The price didn’t matter, since business had been very good for him that year. After examining a nice black one that cost $5, 000, he paid for the pearl in cash, shook hands with the jeweler and left.
A few days later the man returned and said that his wife liked the pearl so much that she wanted another one just like this. It had to be exactly the same size and quality, as she wanted a pair of earrings made. “Can you give me any advice on how to get such a pearl?” said the man. The jeweler regretfully replied “I would say it’s absolutely impossible to find one exactly like that pearl”.
The rich man insisted that the jeweler advertise in the newspapers, offering $25,000 for the matching pearl. Many people answered the advertisement but nobody had a pearl that was just right.
Just when the jeweler had given up hope, a little old lady came into his store. To his great surprise, she pulled the perfect pearl from her purse.” “I don’t like to part with it”, she said sadly. “I got it from my mother, and my mother got it from hers. But I really need the money”.

4 . It’s great fun to explore new places, and it may be like an adventure, even when you know you’re not the first to have been there. But to make sure not to get lost or waste time going round in circles, the following tips may be helpful.
• Do the map reading if you’re being driven somewhere. It’ll be easier if you keep the map following the direction you’re traveling in. Keep looking ahead so that you can give the driver lots of warning before having to make a turn or you’ll have to move to the back seat.
• Get a group of friends together and go exploring. You’ll need a good map, a compass, a raincoat, a cell phone to call for help in case you get lost, and a bit of cash for emergencies. Tell someone where you’re going before you set out and let him know what time you expect to be back. The purpose of the activity is in not getting lost, not in seeing how fast you can go, so always stick together, waiting for slower friends to catch up.
• See if your school or a club organizes orienteering (越野识途比赛), in which you need a map and a compass to find your way. This can be done as a sport, with teams trying to find the way from A to B (and B to C, etc.) in the fastest time, or simply as a spare-time activity. It enables you to be familiar with the use of maps and compasses and gain some practical skills. In some way, it’s not only good fun, but also a great way to keep fit.
No matter which way you choose, it’s not only good fun, but a great way to keep fit.

5 . It is hard to say the first day of school in the United States because when the first day of school is and what happens on the first day of school usually are different by districts(地区).
The first day of school for many school districts in different states is on the day after the first Monday in September. In some other school districts, school begins in mid-to-late August. For example, the Denver, Colorado schools go back in mid-August and schools in Cleveland, Ohio start back usually one week before the first Monday in September. The Boston, Chicago, New York City and San Diego schools start back on the Tuesday or Wednesday after the first Monday in September.
Schools in Cleveland, Ohio used to start the school year on the day after the first Monday in September, but in the 1976-1977 and 1977-1978 academic years, the school year was affected by several bad snowstorms, extreme cold. In the 1978-1979 school year, the Ohio Department of Education moved the start of the year to late August, one week before the first Monday in September. This went into effect in the 1980-1981 school year.
In most school districts in Utah, the school year starts between August 25 and August 30, and goes until the last week of May or the first week in June next year.
In American high schools, the freshmen class usually goes back one or two days before the rest of the school body for an orientation(迎新)period. An orientation period helps the freshmen get familiar with their new school, its rules, and surroundings.
In some schools, the freshmen classes have their photographs taken for identification purposes. Some high schools have tried to make the first week of school fun for incoming freshmen.

9 . Students perform less well in final exams if smartphones are allowed in class, for non-academic (非学业的) purposes in lectures, a new study in Educational Psychology finds. Students who don’t use smartphones themselves but attend lectures where their use is acceptable also do worse, suggesting that smartphone use damages the group learning environment.
Researchers from Rutgers University in the US performed an in-class experiment to test whether dividing attention between smartphones and the lecturer during the class affected students’ performance in within-lecture tests and a final exam. 118 students at Rutgers University took part in the experiment during one term of their course. Smartphones were not allowed in half of the lectures and allowed in the other half. When smartphones were allowed, students were asked to record whether they had used them for non-academic purposes during the lecture.
The study found that having a smartphone didn’t lower students’ scores in comprehension tests within lectures, but it did lower scores in the final exam by at least 5%, or half a grade. This finding shows for the first time that the main effect of divided attention in the classroom is on the length of time in keeping memory, with fewer things of a study task later remembered. In addition, when the use of smartphones was allowed in class, performance was also poorer for students who did not use them as well as for those who did.
The study’s lead author, Professor Arnold Glass, added: “These findings should alarm students and teachers that dividing attention is having a not obvious but harmful effect that is damaging their exam performance and final grade. To help manage the use of smartphones in the classroom, teachers should explain to students the alarming effect—not only for themselves, but for the whole class.”
This is the first-ever study in an actual classroom showing a relationship between losing attention from smartphones and exam performance. However, more researches are required to see how students are affected by using smartphones after school.

During the summer holiday, I thought I should do anything meaningful instead of touring. So I got a job at a fast food restaurant but worked there as a cleaner. I worked 7 hours day for three weeks. The job was boring and seemed endless, in which made me so tired that I nearly stopped it halfway. After all, I stuck to it with determinations. Every day, I started off for work early in the morning, and went home later in the evening. Finally, I finished the job before the new school term begins. Now, I understand how labor means. I think it is a successfully experience, which is worth remember forever.
