2 . His parents may have named him Edson Arantes do Nascimento, but to the rest of the world, he is known as Pelé. Without doubt, Pele is the greatest soccer player ever.

Born in a small village in Brazil, Pelé grew up playing soccer like most other children of his age. Too poor to afford a soccer ball, Pele and his playmates often made one by tying together a bunch of rags. Their playing field was usually a sidewalk. Old tin cans marked where the goalposts should be. Pelé and the other boys from his neighborhood often dreamed of one day becoming professional soccer players. At the age of eleven, Pelé was discovered by Waldemar de Brito, a former professional player. Waldemar de Brito was then the coach of the Bauru Soccer Club and he signed Pele to play for the junior Bauru team.

In 1956, when Pele was fifteen, Waldemar de Brito took him to the city of Santos, Brazil, to try out for the Santos professional team. Pele immediately distinguished himself as one of the best players.

In 1957, Pelé was selected to play on Brazil's national team. He scored the only goal for Brazil in the first game and another goal in the second game. Then in 1958, Pelé helped Brazil win its first World Cup.

Between 1958 and 1970, Pele played in four World Cups. He is the only person who won three World Cups. Pelé played his last game with the Brazilian national team in 1971, but he continued to play for the Sanlos team for three more years before calling it quits.

Throughout his career, Pelé had an amazing ability to touch people. Once a war was suspended for two days because the Santos team had been invited to play there and people on both sides were so eager to see Pelé play.

4 . China on Monday issued strict new measures aimed at addressing what authorities describe as youth videogame addiction, which they blame for a variety of societal ills, including distracting young people from school and family responsibilities.

The new regulation, announced by the National Press and Publication Administration, will ban minors from playing videogames entirely between Monday and Thursday. On the other three days of the week, and on public holidays, they will be only permitted to play" between 8 p. m. and 9 p. m.

The announcement didn't offer a specific age for minors, but previous regulations targeting younger videogamers have drawn the line at 18 years old. Enforcement measures weren't detailed, but in response to previous moves by the government to limit videogame playing by young people, Tencent Holdings Ltd. , the world's largest videogame company, has used a combination of technologies, automatically kicking off players after a certain period of time and using real-name registration and facial-recognition technology to limit game play for minors.

In restricting videogame play for younger people, the government is seeking to "effectively protect the physical and mental health of minors," China's state-run Xinhua News Agency said Monday.

Monday's new rule is likely to be felt through China's online gaming industry, one of the world's largest. The measure comes as the Chinese government seeks to restrict China's technology industry, a campaign that has caused a trillion-dollar selloff in Chinese stock market and hit a range of businesses, including for-profit education providers, ride-hailing (打车) services and e-commerce platforms.

Videogames have become a particular object of anger as Beijing seeks to reshape an industry it has described as motivated by profit at the expense of public morals. A state-media remarks this month triggered a selloff in shares of Tencent after it published an article that described online games as "opium (鸦片) for the mind. "

After the regulations were published on Monday, following the close of stock-market trading, Tencent said it had introduced a variety of new functions to better protect minors. It promised to continue to do so as it "strictly follows and actively implements the latest requirements from Chinese authorities. "

1. According to the new regulation, how long can a minor play videogames during a weekend?
A.One hourB.Two hoursC.Three hoursD.Unlimited hours
2. What measure does Tencent take to carry out the regulation?

3. Which negative influence of videogames is implied in this passage?
A.They harm teenagers' mental healthB.They make people easy to get angry
C.They make people entirely irresponsibleD.They bring in lots of profits for the government
4. Which can be the best title for the passage?
A.No More GamesB.Protection of the Youth
C.The End of Technology IndustryD.Further Restriction on Youth Gaming

5 . How to be a great conversationalist

Although I think there is much for me to learn in the area of communication, I’ve been told by my friends that I’m a great person to speak to.     1     In fact, I don’t think there are any “tricks” you have to use to be a great conversationalist. Below are some rules I apply in all my conversations:

Focus on the positives. Go for the positive topics. Instead of talking about past sadness, choose a discussion of future goals.     2     Less complaining, more solutions. Less judging, more understanding. Doing more of the latter (后者) will make you a more enjoyable person to speak to.

Respect others. Respect other people’s point of view.     3     Respect other people’s privacy. Respect other people’s personal choices; don’t criticize or judge. Remember, everyone has his right to be himself, just as you have the right to be yourself.

4     Your best asset (财富) is your true personality. Value it and let it shine. Don’t cover it up. It’ll be pretty boring if you just repeat the other person’s words during a conversation. Be ready to share your real thoughts and opinions and let others know the real you.

50-50 sharing. I always think that a great conversation should be made up of equal sharing by both the people involved in it.     5     But in general, both should have equal opportunities to share and contribute to the conversation.

A.Be true to yourself.
B.Be truly interested in the person.
C.It’s fine to express your opinion, but don’t force them to accept it.
D.During your conversations, always take a forward-thinking attitude.
E.There’s no need to have a conclusion or agreement in every discussion.
F.Sometimes it may be 40-60 or 60-40 depending on the circumstances.
G.It seems that I have a talent for having conversations go on without boring others.

10 . In October 1937, a newly published book became an instant hit in London, with more than 100,000 copies sold in just a few weeks and still much sought after following three additional printings. That book was Red Star Over China by Edgar Snow, an American journalist who first made the Communist Party of China(CPC中国共产党)known to the world.

In the 1930s, China was in the war of resistance against Japan. The Long March finally took the Central Red Army to Shaanbei in October 1935. Yan'an, a small town in Shaanbei and then the base of the CPC, was like an islet(小岛)surrounded by the ocean of the Kuomintang's military and information blockage. The world knew little about the CPC and the Red Army.

In order to pursue valuable news in China, Snow made it to Yan'an after a long and difficult journey on July 13, 1936. After over 100 days in Shaanbei, Snow was fascinated by the unique charm of the East, something he believed representing the light of rejuvenation(复苏)for the ancient nation of China. For him, the Communists were the most outstanding men and women he had met in China in the past decade with the “military discipline, political morale, and the will to victory”. He recalled his four-month time with the Red Army as a most inspiring experience, during which he had met with the most free and happy Chinese he'd ever known. In these people who devoted themselves to what they believed was the right and just cause, Snow felt an energetic hope, passion and the unbeatable strength of mankind, something he had never felt again ever since.

In the preface(前言)to Red Star Over China, Snow attributed the global popularity of the book not to its style or form, but the stories. According to him, the stories were created by the young Chinese revolutionists and based on the accounts of them. What he did was simply writing them down in words as fair as the water running in spring.

1. What is the function of Paragraph 2?
A.To show the importance of Snow's book in the history
B.To inform an important part of CPC's history in Shaanbei.
C.Yan'an was surrounded by the Kuomintang' military.
D.To tell readers that Long March finally took the Central Red Army to Shaanbei.
2. Which of the following words can best describe Edgar Snow?
A.Independent and easygoing.B.Strong and outspoken.
C.Modest and confident.D.Determined and fair-minded.
3. What can we learn about the book “Red Star Over China”?
A.It was the first book to publicize China to the world.
B.It was a reflection of the political wisdom of ancient China.
C.It was written to show Edgar Snow's sympathy for the Red Army.
D.It was filled with first-hand information from the young Chinese revolutionists.
4. The author's purpose in writing this passage is to ________.
A.introduce Edgar Snow.
B.recall the long history of CPC.
C.introduce the book “Red Star Over China”.
D.show respect for the Red Army.
