I am a proud mother of three children, my last little one being delivered in the middle of this pandemic (疫情). She was born in August and her name is Aida.
Shortly after having Aida, my mother-in-law Ann showed me something she learned from her friend’s mother in an art class she attended weekly, She had showed me how to knit (编织) a scarf.
I spent a lot of time breastfeeding my sweet little girl, so I had some extra time to do something with my hands throughout the day. I enjoyed making the scarf so I purchased tons of yarn (线) since it was winter. I wanted to make scarves for my three children as Christmas gifts.
There was a new family that moved in down the street. The only daughter of the family was Jane, a shy girl, aged 14, the same age of my oldest son David. It seemed that she came from a financially disadvantaged family, for she always wore old clothes. Worse still, in such cold days, she had no more clothes to wear and trembled with cold.
Due to the pandemic, society was thrown into crisis mode. Schools were closed, food supplies and deliveries were suspended and children were stuck at home. In such discouraging time, however, they became good companions, talking and playing at home or around the houses.
It was dreadfully cold this winter. Every time David came back from outside, with red face, he always cried, “Mum, it is freezing outside!” Then, he came over to see whether I finished the scarf. I could tell how impatient he was to wear my scarf sooner! I had to speed the project to satisfy his expectation. But David comforted me by saying he could wait a few days. What a kind and considerate boy he was! Then my great art project finally was accomplished on the morning ahead of Christmas.

5 . On March 7, 1907, the English statistician Francis Galton published a paper which illustrated what has come to be known as the “wisdom of crowds” effect. The experiment of estimation he conducted showed that in some cases, the average of a large number of independent estimates could be quite accurate.
This effect capitalizes on the fact that when people make errors, those errors aren’t always the same. Some people will tend to overestimate, and some to underestimate. When enough of these errors are averaged together, they cancel each other out, resulting in a more accurate estimate. If people are similar and tend to make the same errors, then their errors won’t cancel each other out. In more technical terms, the wisdom of crowds requires that people’s estimates be independent. If for whatever reasons, people’s errors become correlated or dependent, the accuracy of the estimate will go down.
But a new study led by Joaquin Navajas offered an interesting twist (转折) on this classic phenomenon. The key finding of the study was that when crowds were further divided into smaller groups that were allowed to have a discussion, the averages from these groups were more accurate than those from an equal number of independent individuals. For instance, the average obtained from the estimates of four discussion groups of five was significantly more accurate than the average obtained from 20 independent individuals.
In a follow-up study with 100 university students, the researchers tried to get a better sense of what the group members actually did in their discussion. Did they tend to go with those most confident about their estimates? Did they follow those least willing to change their minds? This happened some of the time, but it wasn’t the dominant response. Most frequently, the groups reported that they “shared arguments and reasoned together”. Somehow, these arguments and reasoning resulted in a global reduction in error. Although the studies led by Navajas have limitations and many questions remain, the potential implications for group discussion and decision-making are enormous.

Bella, a very cute squirrel, had a smooth start to life. But when she reached the age of four weeks old, everything changed. On that day, she was playing alone, when a fierce eagle (老鹰) dived from the sky, attacked and badly wounded her.
Because of this deadly hit, Bella had no chance of surviving her wounds in the wild. Luckily, a warm-hearted hunter Ruby Harrison turned up. She gently hugged Bella, being afraid to hurt her and took her home. Ruby not only gave Bella a new home, but also a family with three other adopted squirrels. Amazingly, the four lovely creatures lived and played in harmony quickly. Day by day, thanks to the considerate care of Ruby, all of them grew strong. Of course, Bella also recovered gradually. But Ruby didn’t want to domesticate (驯养) any of them. “They are part of the wild rather than the pets. They belong to a wider home- nature, and they should return to their own world,” Ruby said.
Although unwilling to depart, it was time to say good -bye to each other. In April 2009, with her eyes watery, Ruby saw them disappear into the trees and never expected to see them often. Then initially, the other three squirrels came back for a treat once and stopped coming by, but Bella was different. She seemed to have a strong connection with the Harrisons that kept her visiting almost every day. Thus, they were tightly tied by an invisible bond.
In the past ten years since her release, it was not just Ruby herself who got Bella’s reach. “Bella sits right at the front door to look in for someone’s attention,” Ruby described. “My husband rushes out of the door to be greeted and hopefully runs back inside to a big bowl of nuts for her.”
More amazingly, this spring came with a surprise. Bella came around again, with her extended family, her three babies waiting for someone to notice.

7 . Mental Health Crisis Among Teens Demands a New Approach
Since the CDC released its survey results last month showing alarmingly high rates of sadness and depressive thoughts among teens, fingers have been pointed from two sides at the causes of this crisis.
According to the CDC’s findings, more than one in five of the 17,000 high school students surveyed reported mental breakdown. Their rates of sadness and hopelessness are the highest in a decade, reflecting an increasing trend exacerbated by society’s isolation(隔离)and stress.
Parents as well as teachers and others who have direct contact with children must accept this preventive approach. It is crucial that they not be afraid to ask direct questions about depressive thoughts.
