文章大意:这是一篇议论文。主要讲了我们尽管现实很残酷,有很多灾难,我们应该热爱生活,过好每一天。

1 . Natural disasters may claim thousands of lives or destroy millions of homes. What can we learn from disasters?

Sometimes, there are no real answers. Everyone has lost something and someone, and they keep on asking what they have done to deserve this cruel fate. It’s okay to hold on to these questions, but no matter how hard and painful it is, you should keep moving, breathing and living.     1

Even strangers can teach you kindness. There may be millions of selfish people in the world.     2     There is still kindness out there, waiting to be discovered. You will find it everywhere, at the most unexpected places—even among the wastelands left by the disaster.

Family is everything. Sometimes we forget to love our family, just because we’re too busy with our own lives.     3     We will not realize their value until we arrive at an empty house, an abandoned and forgotten place that you once called “home”.

4     Sure, reality can be harsh and unforgiving but it doesn’t mean that we should blame ourselves and feel like a victim forever. We have to strive and thrive; we have to fight and do whatever it takes to resist and rise up. Not everyone will have a happy ending or an interesting plot, but we can always decide how to write the ending.

Every day of your life should be spent loving and living. Don’t be angry at the world for letting you live an unbearable life of heartbreaks and frustrations.     5     So just love deep and love hard. Live as if it’s your only chance to find the happiness that you deserve.

A.You’ll find your way someday.
B.Your money won’t matter in the end.
C.Life is too short to live in its imperfections.
D.However, it’s not a reason to lose hope in humanity.
E.You shouldn’t be a victim forever——be a survivor.
F.You have to help yourself first before you can help others.
G.At times, we take them for granted because we think they’ll always be there.

2 . Everyone wants to perform well at school. Add these tips to your life and you should be on your way to being a top student!

1    I cannot stress how important it is to pay attention to what your teacher is teaching you. Take part in class discussions if you have something worth adding. Pay attention during class.

Taking notes is important. You don’t need to write down every single word your teacher says but write down what he or she writes on the blackboard, or any special fact you think you might need for a test.    2       In this way, it will help you learn more effectively by thinking about what you are writing.

Don’t skip school. You will be missing courses.    3    However, you will have more work and you have missed lectures. Also, try not to be late for class. It’s most likely that your teacher won’t appreciate it and you will get yourself behind.

Keep a good attitude (态度) towards things. If you have an “ I don’t care about school or this class” attitude, then teachers will be less willing to help you with problems. The same goes for lazy attitude. Have a respectful attitude to the teacher and other students.     4

Always ask questions.     5     If you don’t understand, ask someone. Read your textbook and notes, and then if that fails, ask a teacher, friend, classmate, parent, etc.

A.Be prepared.
B.Write in your own words.
C.Staying organized will be helpful.
D.Pay attention to what the teacher says.
E.It is true that you could make up the work.
F.There is no shame (羞愧)in needing some help.
G.Try not to laugh when other students make mistakes.

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。Arun Kumar Bajaj的梦想是当一位画家。但父亲的突然死亡,使得他继承父亲的职业成为一名裁缝,然而他没有放弃梦想,而是掌握了一种不同寻常的技能,

3 . Arun Kumar Bajaj has a very unusual skill——he can paint with a sewing machine. Technically, it’s embroidering(刺绣), not painting, but his artworks are so detailed that they can pass paintings to the untrained eyes. And the fact that he does it all with a sewing machine just makes it that much more impressive.

Arun was really good at drawing and painting while growing up and dreamed of becoming a famous painter, but his father died suddenly 15 years ago, which destroyed his plans and forced him to give up school in order to run the family business. His father was a tailor and he became one too, but he didn’t let the artist in him die. He started “painting” with needle and thread, but instead of using his hands, he decided on a rather unusual tool—-the sewing machine. It took him a while to master this unique art form, but today he is recognized as the world’s only sewing machine artist. His works become very popular both in India and abroad. Its easy to see why, just by looking at them, but what really makes his embroideries special is the tool he uses.

“You need to be very careful because once youve stitched the cloth, there’s no way you can repair it, ” Arun said. “It’s all done in a single layer to give the painting a neat look. ”

Some of Arun’s most impressive works include a 4x2 feet painting of the court of Ranjit Singh which took the artist over a year to finish. Arun runs a tailoring business in the Adalat Bazar of Patiala, but he devotes a lot of his time to his artistic dream as well.

1. Why do Arun's paintings leave a deep impression on people?
A.They have rich content.B.They take many years to finish.
C.They give people a sense of satisfaction.D.They are finished with a sewing machine.
2. What made Arun give up his former dream?
A.His father’s sudden death.B.His father’s serious illness.
C.His love for sewing machines.D.Lack of managers in his family business.
3. What should Arun do when he paints?
A.Keep stitching the cloth without interruption.
B.Stitch the cloth again when making a mistake.
C.Be very careful to make sure paintings look neat.
D.Make sure the cloth he uses is very strong.
4. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Aruns Wonderful Life JourneyB.Arun’s Most Interesting Works
C.Constant Effort Needed to SucceedD.The World’s Only Sewing Machine Painter

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。口音是我们身份的重要组成部分,同时口音对学习一门新语言也很重要,本文主要讲述了口音产生的原因,正确的口音的重要性以及如何的改善口音。

4 . Accents are an important part of our identity. An accent gives clues about who we are, and the community we belong to or wish to belong to.     1

What is the difference between accents and pronunciation?

Accents are about localized ways of speaking a language. A French person may speak English flawlessly (完美无瑕地), just with a French accent.     2     However, pronunciation is something that — as a learner— you can get right or wrong. If your pronunciation is correct, you can communicate effectively with others whatever your accent is.

    3

If you think back historically people were much more localized with generation after generation of families living in the same small villages and few people traveled out of that area during their lifetimes. So over many generations differences in accent emerged and became very distinct to particular areas. Mountainous villages that are not easily accessible often develop very strong and distinctive accents.

How important is it to get an accent right?

If you’re moving to a certain part of a country, you might want to integrate better with your new community.     4     That’s because it shows a sense of belonging to the community you are trying to fit in with.

How to improve your accent?

5     And then learners should consider which sounds exist in the language you’re learning and then spend some time in front of the mirror practicing moving your tongue and mouth to get those new and different sounds. And learners should be aware of stress and tone, which can sometimes even change the meaning of words.

A.Where do accents and pronunciation emerge?
B.They’re also important for those learning a new language.
C.Try to adapt your speech to sound more like the locals’ speech.
D.The best way is to learn the specific accent of that region.
E.Where do different types of accents come from?
F.That’s fine because there is no wrong or right with an accent.
G.Learners should first think about which sounds don’t exist in your native language.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。主要讲述了在政府有力的措施和百姓的努力下,北京近些年的空气质量有了极大改善。

5 . Zhang Fan, 36, a movie visual effects designer who returned to Beijing from New Zealand for work last year, was surprised by the improvement to the city’s air quality. “I remember the smell in the air and the frequent smoggy days before I left in 2013, after getting a job offer from a film company in New Zealand, ” he said. Last year, a Chinese company offered Zhang a more promising position, so he returned, saying that he could find more opportunities in his line of work in Beijing than elsewhere. In addition to rapid economic development in the Chinese capital, he said the most impressive change is the local air quality. “People discussed air pollution a lot when I was in Beijing previously. Now, it seems that the topic has disappeared completely, as every day is good in terms of air quality,” Zhang said. “The sky in Beijing these days is so clear. ”

On Jan. 4, the municipal authorities in Beijing announced a comprehensive success in improving air quality, with the city’s annual average concentration of PM2. 5 in the air, falling to 33 micrograms per cubic meter, and ozone (臭氧) concentration dropping to 149 mcg per cu m last year.

Yu Jianhua, spokesman for the Beijing Municipal Ecology and Environment Bureau, said at a news conference, “This is a milestone for Beijing’s hard work in fighting air pollution and also means that the city has met its air quality target outlined in the 14th Five-Year Plan(2021-25) ahead of schedule. Beijing has demonstrated to the world over the past 20 years that a mega city with a rapidly increasing GDP, vehicle count, population and energy consumption can move forward to cut air pollution effectively. The PM2.5 reduction over the past few years has surpassed that of developed countries during the same period.

According to the Bureau, the city’s average concentration of PM2.5 dropped by 63 percent last year from 2013, an average annual reduction of about 8 percent. The city experienced 288 days of good air quality last year—up from 112 days in 2013—and just eight days of heavy air pollution. This achievement is clear to see and exciting, but it has not been easy work.

6 . Japanese automaker Toyota says it will team up with the country’s space agency to develop a vehicle called the Lunar Cruiser to explore the moon. The name comes from a popular Toyota vehicle called the Land Cruiser. The company said it plans to launch the vehicle in the late 2020s. After that, Toyota said the vehicle could assist people living on the moon by 2040 and could possibly be sent to Mars as well.

Takao Sato heads the company’s Lunar Cruiser project. He told The Associated Press the vehicle is based on the idea that people eat, work, sleep and communicate with others safely in cars. He hopes theLunar Cruiser can serve the same purpose in space. “We see space as an area for our once-in-a-century transformation, ” Sato said, “By going to space, we may be able to develop telecommunications and other technology that will prove valuable to human life. ”

Research conducted at the University of California found that people who focused daily on feeling grateful for what they’d experienced improved moods, energy, and physical health.     2    , with them focusing the brain’s attention on something that is completely stress-free. Any positive thought will act to keep the brain's attention away from stress.

Taking regular time off to relax can help keep stress under control. Technology enables constant communication and the expectation that you should be available all the time.     3    . Turning off work emails and mobile phones provides a break from these possible sources of stress.

4    , so an adequate amount of sleep is essential. During sleep the brain ‘recharges’, organizing the day’s memories and storing or abandoning them, so that you wake up clear-headed. Self-control, attention and memory are all reduced without enough sleep.

The easiest way to make stress off-and-off lies in something that people do every day: breathing. The practice of focusing on breathing teaches the brain to let go of stressful thoughts for a while. 文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍了全球粮食生产危机下一种新型农业如何解决粮食短缺问题以及它的优势和特点。

8 . Climate breakdown threatens to cause a global food production crisis. The UN forecasts that by 2050, feeding the world will require a 20% expansion in global water use for agriculture. It is hard to see how agriculture can feed the population of the planet, let alone toward the end of the century and beyond. Agriculture is a major cause of climate breakdown, and both river and air pollution. Industrial fishing is similarly driving ecological collapse in seas around the world.

However, at this critical time, farming (a new kind of food technology) is creating astonishing possibilities to save both people and the planet. Farming will enable the return of vast areas of land and sea to nature, greatly reducing carbon emissions (排放物). It means an end to the employment of animals, a stop to overfishing, and a dramatic reduction in cutting down forests and the use of pesticides (杀虫剂). It is the best hope for stopping the destruction of the planet and, if it is done right, it means cheap and abundant food for everyone.

We are about to welcome one of the biggest economic transformations, of any kind, for 200 years. Arguments continue about plants against meat-based diets; however, new technologies will soon make these arguments irrelevant. Before long, most food will come neither from animals nor plants, but from micro-organisms (微生物).

Not only will food be cheaper, it will also be healthier. Due to the fact that farming creates food products built up from simple components rather than broken down from complex ones, hard fats and other unhealthy components can be screened out. Meat will still be meat, but it will be grown in factories rather than in the bodies of animals. Fats will still be fats, but food is likely to be better, cheaper and much less damaging to the living planet.

1. What is the major cause of sea ecological breakdown?
A.Food production.B.Global farming.
C.Industrial fishing.D.Climate breakdown.
2. What does Paragraph 2 mainly tell us about farming?
A.Its benefits.B.Its security.C.Its research.D.Its limits.
3. What will provide the majority of food in the near future?
A.Sea animals.B.Wild plants.C.Micro-organisms.D.Farm products.
4. Which of the following best describes the author’s attitude to farming?
A.Doubtful.B.Positive.C.Disapproving.D.Unclear.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述了如何有一个成功的午睡。

9 . An afternoon nap (午睡) is one of the joys of life, although too much napping is not very good. In some cultures, people will have a daily nap — this is fine. The warning comes when people start sleeping during the daytime, when they did not before. There is certainly a good reason to believe that daytime sleepiness — as in the Alzheimer’s study (阿兹海默症) — can be a marker of a potential condition.

For most people, napping during the day is mainly a sign that you are not getting enough sleep at night, says Dr. Neil Stanley, a sleep expert. “If you feel sleepy during the day, you should think about taking a nap. That is what the body needs — it doesn't need to be kept awake with caffeine, it needs sleep. ”The feeling to notice is “sleepiness”, he says, not “tiredness”, which could be more psychological and linked to stress.

So how do you nap well? The key thing, says Stanley, is how long your nap lasts. Choose either a 20-or 90-minute nap. “When you fall asleep, you'll quickly go through the lighter stages of sleep into your first period of deep sleep. You don't want to wake up in deep sleep because that’s when you wake and feel worse than you did before. ”Napping for 20 minutes means you will wake up before you go into deep sleep; napping for 90 minutes means you’ll complete a sleep cycle.

Once you calculate the time it takes to fall asleep — some people are better at napping than others but, says Stanley, “a healthy adult will fall asleep in between 5 and 12 minutes” — you can set an alarm, allowing a 30- to 40-minute period for a short nap, and up to two hours for a longer one.

A good time to nap is during the body’s natural circle in the afternoon, between 2 pm and 4 pm. “You don’t really want to be napping much past that because then you are going to consume your night-time sleep,” Stanley says. The point, he stresses, is to get good night-time sleep, which would ensure you probably don’t need to nap at all.

1. What does an afternoon nap mean for most people?
A.Caffeine addiction.B.Insufficient night sleep.
C.Psychological stress.D.Potential physical illness.
2. What is the key to a good nap?
A.Health condition.B.Surroundings.
C.Period of the nap.D.Sleeping patterns.
3. What does the underlined word “that” in the last paragraph refer to?
A.Between 2 pm and 4 pm.B.A 30- to 40- minute period.
C.Between 5 and 12 minutes.D.A 20- to 90-minute period.
4. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.Why to phase a nap?B.When to take a good nap?
C.What to learn from a nap?D.How to have a successful nap?
