1 . A man may usually be known by the books he reads es well as by the company he keeps.     1

A good book may be among the best of friends. It is the same today that it always was, and it will never change.    2     It does not turn its back upon us in need. It always receives us with the same kindness, amusing and instructing us in youth, and comforting us in age.

People often discover their common characteristics by the mutual love for a book. As an old proverb goes, “Love me, love my book.”    3     People can think, feel, and sympathize with each other through their favorite author.

Books are by far the most lasting products of human efforts. Temples and statues may fall into ruin, but books will survive.    4     They are fresh forever. The only effect of time is to reject the bad products, for nothing in literature can long survive but what is really good.

5     They bring us into the presence of the greatest minds that have ever lived. We hear what they said and did; we see them as if they were really alive. We sympathize with them, enjoy with them, sorrow with them, Their experience becomes ours, and we feel as if we were in the scenes which they describe.

The book is a living voice. It is an intellect to which one still listens.

A.Their spirits walk among us.
B.Books introduce us into the best society.
C.Great thoughts will never fade over time.
D.It is the most patient and cheerful companion.
E.The book is a truer and higher bond of relationships.
F.The world of a man’s life is the world of his thoughts.
G.One should always live in the company of best books and best men.

2 . Everyone wants to perform well at school. Add these tips to your life and you should be on your way to being a top student!

1    I cannot stress how important it is to pay attention to what your teacher is teaching you. Take part in class discussions if you have something worth adding. Pay attention during class.

Taking notes is important. You don’t need to write down every single word your teacher says but write down what he or she writes on the blackboard, or any special fact you think you might need for a test.    2       In this way, it will help you learn more effectively by thinking about what you are writing.

Don’t skip school. You will be missing courses.    3    However, you will have more work and you have missed lectures. Also, try not to be late for class. It’s most likely that your teacher won’t appreciate it and you will get yourself behind.

Keep a good attitude (态度) towards things. If you have an “ I don’t care about school or this class” attitude, then teachers will be less willing to help you with problems. The same goes for lazy attitude. Have a respectful attitude to the teacher and other students.     4

Always ask questions.     5     If you don’t understand, ask someone. Read your textbook and notes, and then if that fails, ask a teacher, friend, classmate, parent, etc.

A.Be prepared.
B.Write in your own words.
C.Staying organized will be helpful.
D.Pay attention to what the teacher says.
E.It is true that you could make up the work.
F.There is no shame (羞愧)in needing some help.
G.Try not to laugh when other students make mistakes.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。主要讲述为了举办北京冬奥会,组委会采用了大量的人造雪。

3 . Anyone watching the Winter Olympics in Beijing, China over the last few days will have seen lots and lots of snow ----– man-made snow. Since the area gets little natural snow, this is the first time the Winter Olympics is taking place on almost 100% artificial snow.

This year’s Winter Olympics are being held in Beijing, China, and in two areas northwest of Beijing, Yangqing and Zhangjiakou. The areas get cold in the winter, but they don’t get a lot of snow. That’s because they’re not far from the Gobi Desert, and are generally very dry.

That meant some serious changes were needed to hold the Winter Olympics there. China took water from a reservoir which helps supply Beijing’s drinking water and sent it to a nearby river. To carry the water to the mountains for making snow, the country ran miles and miles of pipes. China says making the snow took about 49,000 gallons (185,500 liters) of water. Outside experts say it probably took a lot more water than that.

China hired an Italian company called TechnoAlpin to create the snow. TechnoAlpin created artificial snow at several earlier Winter Olympics. For the snow in this year’s Olympics, TechnoAlpin laid over 40 miles (64 kilometers) of pipe and brought in hundreds of snow-making machines. Even with all of those machines, making the snow for this year’s Games took seven weeks.

It’s useful to be able to make snow when nature doesn’t provide enough. But artificial snow isn’t the same as natural snow, which has more air and less water. An athlete used to natural snow might have to adjust their style on man-made snow.Still, the machines that make artificial snow are quite advanced. They can make several different kinds of snow depending on what’s needed for each sport. For example, the snow they make for downhill skiing is different from the snow made for cross-country skiing.

A few athletes have complained about the snow at this year’s Olympics. Most others say it’s been just fine.

In recent years, it has become more and more common to use artificial snow at winter sports events. That’s true even in places that used to have a lot of snow naturally. Some artificial snow was used in the Winter Olympics in 2010 and 2014 because of warm weather. In the 2018 Games in PyeongChang, South Korea, roughly 90% of the snow was man-made.

As the world warms because of climate change, problems like this are expected to become far more common. Michael Mayr, who leads TechnoAlpin in Asia, says, “You could not have winter sports now without man-made snow.”

4 . Tomatoes were first planted in 700 AD by Aztecs and Incas. Explorers returning from Mexico introduced the tomato into Europe, where it was first mentioned in 1556. The French called it “the apple of love”,the Germans “the apple of paradise(乐园)”.

Tomatoes are rich in vitamins A and C and fiber, and are cholesterol(胆固醇)free. An average size tomato (148 grams or so) has only 35 calories. Furthermore, new medical research suggests that the consumption of lycopene(番茄红素) ,the stuff that makes tomatoes red,may prevent cancer. Besides, the fruit now appears to have two more health giving benefits. Protection against sunburn and helping keep the skin looking youthful are the latest pluses, a study has found.

Professor Mark Birch-Machin said tomatoes could provide a cheap and easy way of improving health. Researchers at Manchester and Newcastle universities recommend two tomato-based meals a day for health. Possible menus include a glass of tomato juice with breakfast and a salad later or tomato soup for lunch and pasta(意大利面)with a tomato sauce for dinner.

To test the fruit’s ability to protect the skin, ten volunteers were asked to eat five tablespoons of tomato paste mixed with olive oil every day for three months. Another ten had a daily dose of olive oil - minus the tomato paste. The tests showed the tomato-eaters were a third better protected against sunburn at the end of the study than at the start, the British Society for Investigative Dermatology’s annual conference heard.

The researchers stressed, however, that their findings were not an excuse to throw away the sun cream. Professor Lesley Rhodes, a Manchester University dermatologist, said: “People should not think tomatoes in any way can replace sun creams but they may be a good additive.”

1. Why does the writer talk about the history of tomatoes in Paragraph 1?
A.To lead in the topic.B.To raise a concern.
C.To introduce a question.D.To make a statement.
2. What is mainly talked about in Paragraph 2?
A.The components of tomatoes.B.The benefits of tomatoes.
C.The latest findings of tomatoes.D.The functions of tomatoes on patients.
3. What is the best way to keep the skin looking youthful?
A.Eating more tomatoes.B.Using more sun cream.
C.Staying inside as often as possible.D.Using sun cream and eating tomatoes.
4. How do the researchers test tomatoes’ ability to protect the skin against sunburn?
A.By giving an example.B.By setting up a database.
C.By making a comparison.D.By analyzing possible reasons.

7 . Under the background of the slow growth of its total population to 1.44 billion, China has seen a sharp rise in older adults over the past decade, solidifying the country’s rapidly aging pattern, the latest national census (人口普查) data shows. The population on the Chinese mainland increased by an average of 0.53 percent annually during the past 10 years to 1.41 billion, compared with an annual growth rate of 0.57 percent from 2000 to 2010, according to the 7th national census published by the National Bureau of Statistics.

“The growth of the total population has slowed down but remains at a steady pace,” Ning Jizhe, head of the bureau, said at a news conference. “Based on trends in recent years, China’s population will grow at an increasingly slow rate in the future while remaining above 1.4 billion.” The increasing elderly population has become a defining feature of the past decade.

Ning said an aging society will set the tone for China's population structure for a long time, presenting challenges and opportunities. “A graying population will pile pressure on supply of labor force and social services, as well as adding to families’ elderly care burden. But more elderly people could also motivate consumption of products and services targeting this age group, and advance the development of some technologies,” he said.

Ning added that those between the ages of 60 and 69, who are equipped with knowledge, experience and skills and are generally in good health, make up nearly 56 percent of all older adults. “Their potential to continue making contributions to society and playing a constructive role is big,” he responded to a question on the outlook for raising the retirement age and carrying out other potential measures aimed at addressing the aging trend. Some population economists also said the latest number and proportion (比例) of elderly are largely within predictions, and the aging trend will continue for a long time.

1. What does the 7th national census data show?
A.The aging population of China has risen rapidly.
B.The annual growth rate has increased by 0.04%.
C.The annual growth rate was 0.57% during the past 10 years.
D.The total population of Chinese mainland increased to 1.44 billion.
2. What does Ning Jizhe say about the growth of graying population?
A.It is beyond predictions.B.It brings few advantages.
C.It has sharply slowed down.D.It will increase pressure on family.
3. What is Ning Jizhe’s attitude to the graying population?
A.Objective.B.Doubtful.C.Unclear.D.Negative.
4. What can be a suitable title for the passage?
A.The aging trend brings problems
B.An aging society presents opportunities

8 . Paper is one of our oldest, simplest and most important inventions. But it also presents a danger to the world in two significant ways. First, the making of paper requires the loss of millions of trees each year. Between 2001 and 2019, the world lost 386 million hectares of forest. Of the trees that were cut down, 42% went to paper production. And worldwide use of paper is expected to double in the next 40 years. Clearly, the planet cannot sustain such a high rate of forest loss.

The second great problem with paper is what happens once it is no longer useful. A huge quantity of wastepaper ends up in dumps and landfills (垃圾填埋场), where it can produce harmful gases. Paper in landfills leads to the release (释放) of methane, a gas that is a significant contributor in global warming.

One simple solution can greatly reduce both of these problems: paper recycling. Paper is mainly made from cellulose (纤维素), which makes up the cell walls of trees and many other plants. Because of its structure, cellulose can be used repeatedly in papermaking. So far, trees are the only source of cellulose that can fill the massive demand for paper products. Therefore, recycling paper is simply one of the best ways to save trees.

Thanks to advances in processing, recycled paper isn’t the dull-colored stuff many of us are familiar with any more. It now can offer the same print performance as non-recycled paper.

Effective recycling requires a consistent effort. The way to begin is with education and understanding. Once enough people realize the need for recycling, more effective recycling systems can be carried out. The massive loss of trees affects everybody on earth. Everyone should do their part to recycle paper and encourage government and industries to do the same.

1. What does the author want to express in paragraph 1?
A.Consequences resulting from forest loss.
B.The significance of paper in daily life.
C.The disadvantages of current paper production.
D.The severe situation caused by papermaking.
2. Why is paper in landfills harmful?
A.It releases smelly gases.B.It results in global climate change.
C.It pollutes the nearby land.D.It may lead to fire accidents.
3. What can we know about paper-recycling?
A.It produces cellulose to make more paper.B.The structure of cellulose makes it possible.
C.The color of recycled paper is different.D.It produces cellulose without using trees.
4. What’s the purpose of this text?
A.To introduce paper recycling technology.B.To stress the threat of global warming.
C.To appeal to people to recycle paper.D.To describe the considerable need for paper.

9 . LANZHOU-When an international olive oil competition announced its winners in Greece in late June, excitement spread across the village of Daoqi in Northwest China.

“The award-winning olive oil was made from our fruit,” said Ru Ciming, 50, an olive planter from the village under the city of Longnan, Gansu province. The variety of olive trees in Ru’s orchard (果园) was introduced from Spain. In the eyes of locals, the foreign trees have not only pulled the city, once among the least-developed regions in China, out of poverty, but they have also brought them international fame.

Olives originated in the Mediterranean (地中海地区) and their oil, often called liquid gold, is used widely in food, cosmetics and medicine. In the 1960s, the Albanian government gifted China more than 10,000 olive saplings (树苗), which were then planted in many parts of the country on nationwide trials. Longnan began to plant olive trees in the early 1970s and experts concluded that the region was ideal for the resettlement of the olive trees due to its climate and soil condition. After years of experiments and promotion, it is now the largest olive cultivation (栽培) base in China.

In recent years, the local olive oil industry has continued to expand as Longnan has improved cooperation with Mediterranean countries that have a long history of olive planting, including Italy, Greece and Spain. The improved cooperation aims to introduce better varieties and initiate technical exchanges.

Pedro J. Rodriguez Sanchez, a Spanish olive seedling expert, was one of the early contributors to olive exchanges. He arrived in Longnan in 2009, when only half of the local olive tree seedlings had survived. His technical guidance helped raise the survival rate to over 90 percent.

Zhao Haiyun, an official in charge of promoting the olive industry in Longnan’s Wudu District, said that many more European experts have arrived since Sanchez. They have visited orchards to offer guidance to farmers, and helped companies improve their processing and storage procedures.

They have helped the district, as well as the city of Longnan, to jump on the bandwagon of China’s rising demand for high-quality olive oil, especially among well-off urban families, said Zhao.

1. What can we learn from the third paragraph?
A.Olive oil is named liquid gold and has many uses.
B.The Albanian government sold some olive saplings to China.
C.Longnan has a history of about 30 years of planting olive trees.
D.Longnan is fit for the growth of olive trees due to its rich water resources.
2. Where did Pedro J. Rodriguez Sanchez come from?
A.Italy.B.Albania.C.Spain.D.Greece.
3. Which of the following words can replace the underlined one “bandwagon” in the last paragraph?
A.Policy.B.Habit.C.Fashion.D.Model.
4. What can be the best title for the news report?
A.Olives link Northwest China with world
B.Oliver trees pull Longnan out of poverty
C.Longnan is largest olive cultivation base in China
D.Longnan improves cooperation with Mediterranean countries
