1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Everything about moving day was a puzzle. I didn't know anything about our new building on a new street. Our old life was broken into pieces and packed up in piled boxes. I wondered if it would ever fit back together again.

Mom introduced me to our new neighbours, the Chens. Mrs Chen worked with Mom at the job she'd just started. Mr Chen was a famous craftsman(匠人) from China.

Mom said it was a fresh start, but it felt broken to me. I just wanted things to go back to how they had been before.

After the first day at my new school, I walked home alone. Mom had told me she had to work. I was still hoping she'd meet me after the bell. I had to open the door myself with the new key. I felt a bit hungry and went straight into the kitchen, ripping tape from the packed boxes while I searched for a clean plate. My fingers slipped, and something went crashing to the ground.

“Benjamin” cried Mom from the doorway. I didn't hear her come in. “What just broke?” she asked, kneeling to pick up the pieces. In her hands, I recognized the shattered pieces. It was Grandma's bowl. “I can't believe you broke this,” she said.

“Well, I can't believe we have to live here now! I can't believe I have to switch schools, and I can't believe you didn't even meet me after my first day” I ran into my room, slamming the door behind me.

The broom swept across the kitchen floor. Then the click of Mom's bedroom door closed behind her. I sneaked out into the kitchen and found the fragments in the dustbin. There were so many pieces in here, but maybe I could put them back together. Turning the pieces, I tried to match them, but this bowl would never look the same again.

“I'm sorry I yelled,” said Mom, as she opened her door. “Please just throw out the pieces. We can't make a fresh start with broken things.”

As I wandered down the hall, Mr Chen was emptying his garbage.

Jesse Dufton was born with a genetic condition, retinitis pigmentosa (色素性视网膜炎), and over the years, his eyesight gradually worsened. By the time he got to university in Bath to study Chemistry it had got to the point where he couldn’t really see images at all, only the difference between light and dark. And a few years later, he was almost 100% blind.

Jesse’s mum was a teacher and his dad ran a charity, and they’ve always encouraged and supported him in everything.

Jesse started climbing when he was young. His dad took him up his first rock route when he was two. All his early climbing was outdoor traditional climbing. His dad had been in the Mountain Rescue and was part of a mountaineering club, so they would go for weekends away climbing throughout the UK.

Jesse’s father taught him everything and guided his first route outside when he was 11. At this time he had about 30% blurry (模糊不清的) central vision. He could just see well enough to place rock equipment, but not well enough to pick out the routes from the ground.

At university he joined the Mountaineering Club and was able to climb much more frequently. They had regular trips to indoor walls and weekends away outdoors. He developed a great circle of climbing friends and went on multiple trips to Europe. On these he started Alpine climbing and ice climbing too.

But when his sight dropped to a level where he could no longer read, it started to be difficult to place equipment as he couldn’t see whether it was properly seated. He also stopped being able to pick out the holds at indoor walls.

Jesse thought he might have to give up climbing as his eyesight got worse. But his parents never give up hopes for him. They planned a climbing for the family and encouraged Jesse to have a try again. Jesse smiled because he knew his parents would always be his best guide.

I will never forget the day I passed my driving test and got my license. The instructor just informed me that I passed and was reviewing the driver restrictions with me as I was full of smiles. Meanwhile, I looked over at my dad and he was staring at his phone with a strange look. “Excuse me sir, but I must take this call…” my father rudely interrupted. “Hello?”, he answered the phone. The look on his face was unforgettable as he turned as white as a ghost. My first thought was that someone was in the hospital or had died. Although it turned out that everyone was safe, little did I know that phone call would change my attitude to life forever.

The call was from the North Middleton Fire Department and they informed my father that he needed to get to the house as soon as possible. My dad was about to shut his phone when suddenly I heard my sister on the phone. All I could hear was her crying hysterically and screaming “Fire”! I had one thought going through my head at that moment, and it was my niece, Myleeah. Did my sister get her out of the house in time? She was only six months old and I adored her more than anything in the entire world. We ran out of the office both in complete shock. Needless to say, my dad was driving like crazy.

At this point I didn’t even know how to prepare myself. The thought of my house burning to the ground didn’t seem to be real. The drive from the office to my house was only a fifteen-minute drive, but it felt like forever. Finally after running red lights and driving off the side of the road, we were half a mile away from the house. All we could see was black smoke and floating ashes filling the sky. This was when reality hit me and I thought not only might I lose my home, but also my baby niece. I began to break down in tears and pray that everyone was safe.

Paragraph 1:

We finally pulled into my neighborhood which was full of fire trucks, police cars, and black ash.

Paragraph 2:

I finally found my sister sitting in our neighbor’s yard with black ash all over her.

Unlike most U.S national parks, Everglades national park, located in south Florida, was created to protect a fragile ecosystem(生态系统)instead of safeguarding a unique geographic feature. It is a heaven for a wide range of wildlife, such as turtles, snakes, lizards, the Grass frog, Wading birds and so on, among which are fierce American alligators(鳄鱼). It is said that some of the alligators often appear in the areas where people live, causing much damage.

A terrible incident happened on a hot summer day. It was so hot a day that nearly every one felt like jumping into the cool water. A little boy simply couldn’t put up with the heat, deciding to go fora swim in the old swimming hole behind his house.

“Mum, it being so hot, I want to have a swim.” the boy told his mother while walking out.

“No, Honey, there has been a warning that an alligator from the park has appeared in the surrounding area. It is dangerous!” said his mother in a loud voice. But the little boy rushed out of the back door like a gust of wind before his mother could stop him.

He was in such a hurry to dive into the cool water that he left behind shoes, socks, and shirt as he left.

He flew into the water and enjoyed the comfortable feeling that the cool water brought him, not realizing that as he swam toward the middle of the lake, an alligator was swimming toward him. His mother was preparing dinner in the kitchen when suddenly she caught the two getting closer and closer to each other as she was looking out of the window. “Oh, My God!” she couldn’t help crying loudly, getting into a great panic. And then in great fear, she ran toward the water, shouting to her son as loudly as she could all the way, “Alligator, Alligator!”

Hearing her voice, the little boy became alarmed and made a U-turn to swim to his mother. However, it was too late. Something horrible was happening.

Mrs. Palin spoke as she walked to the front of the classroom, “Next Wednesday, I’ll give you a test to check your ability as a conductor. Now, select one of the composers listed on the chalkboard. And after class, find a tape containing the composition created by the composer. During the test, use the tape player to play the composition. When the music starts, imagine you are the conductor of an orchestra that performs the composer’s music.” And then she smiled, “You’ll receive the test in front of your classmates.”

“What? A test in front of the classmates? It will kill me,” I said to myself. Although normally I performed well in music, and often have high marks, I am quite a shy girl. After a short while, I took a deep breath and scanned the list of names on the chalkboard. One name caught my attention.

“Who’s that person?” I wondered. I didn’t know, but that was going to be my choice.

Seated in the classroom, I fixed my eyes on that name anxiously, hoping no one would announce that name. Finally, it was my turn. I said without a second thought, “Johannes Brahms.” once I said the name, panic washed over me. I sighed, “How am I going to do this? I know nothing about the person and his composition. But I have to perform in front of my classmates and teacher.”

Later in the day, I went to a store and bought a tape that contained Johannes Brahms’s compositions and its relevant music notation (乐谱). Back home, played the tape, and tried to get familiar with the composition. When listening to the composition and looking at the music score, I held a stick and moved my arms to and fro (来回地), pretending to be guiding an orchestra. During the following days, I kept practicing but didn’t perform quite well. The composition was indeed hard to me.

When the big day came, I felt nervous as I slipped into my seat and waited for my turn to perform. Eventually, Mrs. Palin called my name, “Jill, it’s your turn.”

6 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

People always hold the belief that money talks. As for me, I had the same opinion. But a small thing changed all that I thought.

I was wandering in the street market on a Sunday morning before Christmas. There were so many people and so much noise. People were coming and going, chatting, bargaining and laughing. I walked back and forth and then got to the place where carp (鲤鱼) was sold. The carp-sellers were so busy today because there were much more buyers than sellers.

Many buyers were surrounding an old woman, asking and even shouting. At the edge of the crowd, there was a little boy with a handful of small change and a middle-aged man who looked like a gentleman. The little boy seemed impatient, and he tried to crowd into those people but in vain since he was so young, which made him very worried. But the middle-aged man was taking his time and he looked so relaxed with a cigarette in his fingers. Breathing out a cloud of smoke, he sneered (冷笑) and showed a disgusting look towards the crowd.

The old woman’s business was so good that for a short time her two full baskets of carp turned into empty. One of the baskets had only one carp left. And meanwhile the buyers were also gone except two—the little boy and the middle-aged man.

They handed out some money nearly at the same time, saying the same words, “I’d like to buy the fish!” The scene immediately attracted me and I determined to take some time to find out who would get the only fish.

“How much is the fish?” the middle-aged man asked. “3 dollars per kilogram,” the old woman answered.

“Weight?” the middle-aged asked then. “3 kilograms,” the old woman answered.

“I just have the enough money, I will buy it!” the little boy said with bright eyes.

“I’ll give you ten dollars to buy it!” the middle-aged man began to catch the fish.

I discovered my love for writing while working on my undergraduate degree in English. I fell in love with children's literature and knew that was what I wanted to do with my life: write for children. So I wanted to learn how to write. But life kept me busy, and my dream stopped.

Two decades later, I wanted to sign up for a university's writing program for adults to accept the education of writing. 1 hoped to greatly improve my writing skills and then start my writing journey. So I applied to a university for such a writing program.

But after several days of taking the courses, I found the learning tasks were too heavy in light of my busy family life, so I dropped out of the program.

Over the next few years, I applied to several universities writing programs again. However, still due to the busy family life, I gave up after only a few days of taking the courses. And I knew I would never apply to a school again. I had closed that door.

Two years ago, my husband got a new job, requiring us to move from our home in Texas to Washington, D.C. it wasn't an easy move. The family part was the problem. No one would be moving with us. All our children had grown up. So when we sat down for dinner in our new home-the big, empty and quiet house, only my husband and me, I didn't know how to deal with the quiet life.

One morning, I woke up from a dream. In my dream, I had contacted the last university's writing department, asked to rejoin their writing program for adults, and was allowed. The dream had shaken me. So, before I got out of bed or changed my mind, I picked up my phone and sent an e-mail asking what I would need to do to reapply.

8 . 阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。

On a sunny Saturday in June, Alyson, 3, squealed(尖叫) with laughter as she and her mother, Marlen, played hide-and-seek in the front yard of their home. With Marlen close behind, tiny Alyson flashed into the backyard of an elderly neighbor. About halfway across the yard, Alyson suddenly disappeared, seemingly swallowed whole by a barely visible opening in the ground. Marlen screamed.

The neighbor’s caretaker, Luz, 26, was preparing dinner in the neighbor’s kitchen and assumed the shrieks were the sounds of children playing. But she ran outside anyway and found Marlen sobbing and Alyson’s sister Damary, 25, kneeing on the grass, dialing 911.

“Alyson fell in the hole!” Damary cried to Luz. Luz gave a quick glance down the hole in disbelief and saw only darkness. Then she heard Alyson’s wails(哭泣) from deep underground. “Hang on there, sweety. We’ll get you out soon.”

Luz ran inside the house and down to the basement for a ladder, which happened to be not very long. She then settled for a gray extension cord(延长线) to use as a rope with which to rappel(用绳索下降) into the hole. Back in the yard, she and Damary used their hands to dig at the hole,   widening the opening from 7 inches in diameter to about 20 inches.Marlen sat on the grass, too distracted to help.

At the thought that Alyson might get hurt and was too young to grasp and climb the rope on her own, Luz made up her mind to go down herself. When the police detective Aaron arrived a few minutes later, Luz was already in the hole up to her waist.

“Get out of here,” the officer told Luz, lifting her up by the arm. “It’s dangerous for you.”

“It’s more dangerous for the Baby,” she argued, “She’s going to die.”

Donnie was my youngest third-grader. He was a shy, nervous perfectionist. His fear of failure kept him from classroom games that other children played with wild abandon. He seldom answered questions in class because he was afraid he might make mistakes. Written homework, especially math, reduced him to nail-biting frustration (挫败感). He seldom finished his work because he repeatedly checked with me to make sure he hadn’t made a mistake.

I tried my best to build his self-confidence, and I repeatedly asked other colleagues for good advice, but nothing changed until midterm, when Mary Anne, a student teacher, was sent to our classroom. She was young and pretty and she loved children. My pupils, Donnie included, liked her very much. However, even enthusiastic, loving Mary Anne found it hard to deal with this little boy who feared he might make a mistake.

Then one morning we were working math problems on the blackboard. Donnie had copied the problems with painstaking neatness and had worked out answers to some of them. Pleased with his progress, I left the children with Mary Anne and went for art materials. When I returned, I found Donnie was in tears because he had missed the third problem. My student teacher looked at me in despair. Suddenly her face brightened. From the desk we shared, she got a box filled with many pencils and two erasers.

“Look, Donnie,” she said, kneeling beside him and gently lifting the tear-stained face from his arms. “I’ve got something to show you.”She took out the pencils and erasers, one at a time, and placed them on his desk. Donnie looked a little confused, wiping tears from his eyes.

Paragraph 1:

“See these pencils and erasers, Donnie?” she continued.

The eraser became Donnie’s prized possession.

10 . 阅读下面文章,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一个完整短文,续写词数应为150左右。

I live on a street where all the houses have back gardens and where most of my neighbours look after their gardens adequately. However, my next door neighbour Bill and I are keen gardeners and keep our gardens to a high standard, growing vegetables and flowers. We even take part in local “Best Garden” competition. We both have small lawns. One day, Bill asked me if he could borrow my lawnmower as his was being repaired. I agreed. I did not pay much attention at that time but noticed a few days later that his lawn was still not cut. Indeed, it looked as bad as I had ever seen it, so I enquired what was happening He lowered his head, seeming to avoid eye contact with me. I was told that my mower was broken when he received it. I argued that it was not true and demanded him to get it repaired immediately. He refused and walked away angrily.

After this argument we did not speak at all. His garden continued to match mine for beauty and both thought our garden would be the winner in the competition. One day, I saw an ambulance at his door. My other neighbours told that Bill had been taken into hospital and was seriously ill, and would probably be in hospital for some considerable time.

I knew that Bill’s wife Grace would not be able to cope with the garden as she had to take care of the family, and because of the argument, I gave up the idea to help. As usual, I continued to tend to my garden.

However, things changed. One day, during the night, there was a storm with heavy rain and high winds. The following morning, repaired the damage to my garden and noticed that the damage to Bill’s garden was much more extensive.

Paragraph 1:

Seeing his garden getting more out of control, I decided to talk with Grace about my idea.
