1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Bobby was getting cold sitting out in his backyard in the snow. Bobby didn't wear boots, or rather, he didn't own any. The thin sneakers he wore had a few holes in them and they did a poor job of keeping out the cold.

Bobby had been in his backyard for about an hour already. Try as he might, he could not come up with an idea for his mother's Christmas gift. He shook his head as he thought, “This is useless. Even if I do come up with an idea, I don't have any money for a gift.”

Wiping tears from his eyes, Bobby started walking down to the street where the shops were. It wasn't easy being six without a father, particularly when he needed a man to talk to.

Bobby walked from shop to shop, looking into each decorated window. Everything seemed so beautiful but so out of reach. It was starting to get dark and Bobby reluctantly turned to walk home when suddenly his eyes caught the glimmer (微光) of the setting sun's rays reflecting on something on the roadside. He reached down and discovered a shiny dime (一角硬币).

Never before had Bobby felt as wealthy as he did at that moment. As he held his newly-found treasure, warmth spread throughout his entire body and he walked into the first store. His excitement quickly turned cold when salesperson after salesperson told him that he could not buy anything with only a dime.

He saw a flower shop and went inside to wait in line. When the shop owner asked if he could help him, Bobby presented the dime and asked if he could buy one flower for his mother's Christmas gift. The shop owner looked at Bobby and his one dime offering. Then he put his hand on Bobby's shoulder, saying, “You just wait here and I'll see what I can do for you.” As Bobby waited, he looked at the beautiful flowers and even though he was a boy, he could see why mothers and girls loved flowers.

Paragraph 1:

A few minutes later, the shop owner came out.

Paragraph 2:

With the bunch of roses in his hands, Bobby walked out of the door and then broke into a run.

A MOTHER’S DAY SURPRISE

The twins were filled with excitement as they thought of the surprise they were planning for Mother’s Day. How pleased and proud Mother would be when they brought her breakfast in bed. They planned to make French toast and chicken porridge. They had watched their mother in the kitchen. There was nothing to it. Jenna and Jeff knew exactly what to do.

The big day came at last. The alarm rang at 6 a.m. The pair went down the stairs quietly to the kitchen. They decided to boil the porridge first. They put some rice into a pot of water and left it to boil while they made the French toast. Jeff broke two eggs into a plate and added in some milk. Jenna found the bread and put two slices into the egg mixture. Next, Jeff turned on the second stove burner to heat up the frying pan. Everything was going smoothly until Jeff started frying the bread. The pan was too hot and the bread turned black within seconds. Jenna threw the burnt piece into the   sink and put in the other slice of bread. This time, she turned down the fire so it cooked nicely.

Then Jeff noticed steam shooting out of the pot and the lid starting to shake. The next minute, the porridge boiled over and put out the fire. Jenna panicked. Thankfully, Jeff stayed calm and turned off the gas quickly. But the stove was a mess now. Jenna told Jeff to clean it up so they could continue to cook the rest of the porridge. But Jeff’s hand touched the hot burner and he gave a cry of pain. Jenna made him put his hand in cold water. Then she caught the smell of burning. Oh dear! The piece of bread in the pan had turned black as well.

Barditch High School decided to have an All-School Reunion, which offered former students a chance to reconnect with old friends, remember the fine times they had at school and celebrate with people they might not have seen for years. Over 450 people came to the event, and all the people there were full of excitement. There were tours of the old school building and a picnic at Confederate Park. Several former teachers were on hand to tell stories about the old days. Ms. Mabel Yates, the English teacher for over fifty years, was wheeled to the park

Some eyes rolled and there were a few low groans (嘟嚷声) when Ms. Yates was about to speak. Many started looking at their watches and coming up with excuses to be anywhere instead of preparing to listen to a lecture from an old woman who had few kind words for her students and made them work harder than all the other teachers.

Then Ms. Yates started to speak: “I can't tell you how pleased I am to be here. I haven't seen many of you since your graduation, but I have followed your careers and enjoyed your victories as well as crying for your tragedies I have a large collection of newspaper photographs of my students. Although I haven't appeared in person, I have attended your college graduations, weddings and even the births of your children, in my imagination ”

Ms. Yates paused and started crying a bit. Then she continued: “It was my belief that if I pushed you as hard as I could some of you would succeed to please me and others would succeed to annoy me. Regardless of our motives,I can see that you have all been successful in your chosen path.”

"There is no greater comfort for an educator than to see the end result of his or her years of work. You have all been a great source of pleasure and pride me and I want you to know I love you a11 from the bottom of my heart”, she added.

4 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

When I worked as a nurse, I was on day duty and while my friends were on night duty. On one shift, I remember I sensed something just before going off duty at 11am. I had brought the ward sister her morning tea, so I put down the tea tray. The tray rattled and fell through the window. At first I thought I had accidentally knocked it over, but then I felt the whole building shook and patients screamed.

I realized that we were in the grips of a tremendous earthquake. I caught hold of a nearby patient, who was terribly frightened by it. I pushed her under the bed and held the bed in place while I got under it myself. I then pulled a blanket down between us. As soon as it settled, I decided to try and get the patient safely outside, I carried her out and helped her down to the lawn, where several other people now had gathered.

I knew the ward sister was with another patient, so I went back inside the building. When I reached the ward sister, I found her patient couldn’t walk. We made a seat for her by linking our hands and arms, and carried her outside together. We went back through the building to check no one was left behind. Almost all of the patients had been able to get themselves out of our ward, as far as I knew.

Once our ward was cleared, a doctor called for volunteers to go down to the isolation ward with him to help more people. Another nurse and I went down there. The first thing we saw was a bath in the hallway, We came to the ruined ward. The doctor went in ahead of us through the remains of what had been a doorway. He found one of the nurses partially covered with rubble (碎石). She was still alive so we began to clear the rubble away. Suddenly the aftershock struck. The doctor ordered us to leave. This brave man intended to stay with the trapped nurse and risk his own life.

5 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

Sally had an anxiety disorder that made her fail to speak in social situations. I'm a nurse and use Bella to help children in my community, to bring them joy, comfort and confidence the way only a dog can. I thought back to when I'd first brought Bella to the school.

That morning in January, her teacher led us to a room by the school office. “Sally hasn't spoken outside her home in two years,” she told me. “Her parents have taken her to doctors, but nothing has worked.” A little girl stood shyly just inside the doorway. Her eyes brightened when she noticed my dog.

“This is Isabella Rose. I call her Bella,” I said. “Would you like to pet her? She doesn't know anyone here and she'd like to meet you. She does tricks. Would you like to see?”

Sally nodded. I moved my hand. Bella lay down and then rolled over. Sally's eyes cheered up. We visited the school once a week. I showed Sally the hand signals for various commands. She was a natural with Bella, maybe because she couldn't rely on the spoken word herself. Bella sensed that and responded. Soon Sally was able to take Bella through her paces all on her own. I could see her standing taller, more sure of herself each time we met.

One morning in March she was working with Bella, I heard a tiny voice, barely a whisper: “Good dog.” Sally didn't take her eyes off Bella, but I wanted to jump for joy. Sally spoke a little more each week, only to Bella at first, but then to me. She started giving voice commands with her hand signals and her confidence rose. Still, she hadn't spoken in her classroom and the school year was winding down.

Now, fiveyearold Sally stood nervously in front of her kindergarten class, with Bella, my trained dog, sitting calmly by her side. Her classmates were focused on Sally, waiting for her to speak. It was June—only one week of school left—but they had never heard her voice. Not once.

Every Thanksgiving Day for nine years, Peter, a poor man, sat down in the New York City park, waiting for an old gentleman who would invite him to eat a big meal. But this Thanksgiving Day Peter wasn't hungry. He was lucky. A lady often helped the poor on this day and she had served too much food to him. He had eaten so big a meal that he had almost no power to move. So he sat there, very full and his breath almost stopped.

At the time, an old gentleman was coming toward Peter's seat. Every Thanksgiving Day the old gentleman came there and then led Peter to a restaurant and watched him eating. Feeding Peter once a year was a tradition.

"I can give thanks on this day. I'll give you a meal that will surely make your body feel as strong as your mind." said the old gentleman. Always before those words had been music in Peter's ear. But now he looked up at the old gentleman's face with tears of suffering in his eyes. But the old gentleman didn't see Peter's eyes. Peter wondered why the old gentleman seemed sad as he spoke.

The old gentleman was thin and tall. His hair was whiter and thinner than last year. He had no family and he just thought Peter was his relative. He lived alone in an old house near the park. His eyes were bright with pleasure. Peter finally nodded and accepted the invitation. Peter was too full to eat but he understood that he was a part of the tradition.

The old gentleman led Peter to the same restaurant. He sat at the table silently. Today, it was strange that he kept staring at Peter's food as if he were very hungry. Peter began to eat. The turkey and all the other food were gone almost as quickly as they appeared. Peter saw the look of happiness on the old gentleman's face. After an hour, the big meal was finished.

"Thank you!" Peter said weakly. He stood up heavily and started to go. They said goodbye as they did each year. The old gentleman went away first.

Several years ago, I traveled by train to Stockholm. I was visiting two friends who were to meet me at the train station. I stood there waiting for my first friend to arrive and in the midst of   all the hurrying passengers that Friday afternoon, I heard a weak voice; it sounded like   a   question. I turned and saw a young man standing with a white cane ( 拐 杖 ) , his suitcase by his feet.   I   approached   and   asked,“Do   you   need   help?”“Yes,”he   replied,   nodding   his   head, appearing relieved.

He had been trying for some time, unsuccessfully, to get someone’s attention. He had   missed his train home. His cell phone battery was dead, and he needed to call his mother to tell   her of the circumstances.

This young man named Mustafa, I found out, had just completed his first week at a school   for the blind. He went to school on Mondays and returned home on Fridays. Of course I helped him call his mother. I did not understand what he spoke with her on my cell phone, but I could tell the language was Swedish. Of course the next problem was finding the right train home and telling his mother the new arrival time. Yet in   this disordered   train   station, I did   not want to   miss connecting with my friend Bogdan who was on his way to the spot where we were standing.

Before I could dial the number to call Bogdan, he was suddenly already there. I described the problem and Bogdan took the young man’s arm and we were off on our adventure to help get Mustafa home. While sorting out where his home was, what train, and what time, my second friend Marcello called and wondered where we were. Soon he joined us. It happened that   Marcello speaks 12 languages.

"There's a new kid in our class," I told my friend Aidan as we hung up our coats at the back of the classroom.

"How do you know?" Aidan asked.

"He moved in next door to me."I said, sitting down at my desk. "Mom and I brought cookies over yesterday."

When we were talking about the new kid, Ms Simpson, our headteacher, entered the classroom. "Class, please welcome Brady Walker," Ms Simpson said. My new neighbor stood beside her.

"Brady. tell the class something about yourself." Ms Simpson said.

“I'm from California." said Brady. “I have a dog that cats all my stuff (东西)."

Someone laughed. "His dog sounds just like mine."I thought.

"I like baseball and basketball. And I take dance class."

"Dance class,” Aidan shouted loudly. "That’s for girls!”

The whole class laughed. Brady's face turned bright red. "That's enough," Ms Simpson said. At lunch. Brady walked over to an empty seat at my table.

"Hi. Emilio;," Brady said lo me. "Thanks again for those tasty cookies. Can I sit here?"

I was about to say yes. but Jordan put his feel on the chair. "This seal is taken," he said. "Sit with the girls." Aidan laughed. They didn't want to make friends with "girls".

Brady walked away and sat by himself.

That afternoon, Brady sat by himself on the bus. I felt bad for him. I thought about silting with him, but I didn't want to get picked on.

I remembered how everyone laughed at me when I knitted( 编织)a scarf for Ms Simpson.

I didn't like being laughed au so I gave up knitting. But what would have happened if I'd stood up for myself?

When I got home, I made a sandwich. My dog. Gus. was barking (吠叫)by the living-room window. I walked over to see why. Brady was shooting baskets in his driveway, He was really good!

9 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

During this past year, I’ve had three instances of car trouble. Each time these things happened, I was sick of the way most people hadn’t bothered to help. One of those times, I was on the side of the road for close to three hours with my big Jeep. I put signs in the windows, big signs that said NEED A JACK (千斤顶), and offered money. Nothing. Right as I was about to give up, a Mexican family in a small truck pulled over, and the father bounded out.

He sized up the situation and called for his daughter, who spoke English. He conveyed through her that he had a jack but that it was too small for the Jeep, so we would need something to support it. Then he got a saw (锯子) from the truck and cut a section out of a big log on the side of the road. We rolled it over and put his jack on top, and we were in business.

I started taking the wheel off, and then, if you can believe it, I broke his tire iron. No worries: He handed it to his wife, and she was gone in a flash down the road to buy a new tire iron. She was back in 15 minutes. We finished the job, and I was a very happy man.

The two of us were dirty and sweaty. His wife prepared a pot of water for us to wash our hands. I tried to put a $20 bill in the man’s hand, but he wouldn’t take it, so instead I went up to the truck and gave it to his wife as quietly as I could. I asked the little girl where they lived. Mexico, she said. They were in Oregon so Mommy and Daddy could work on a fruit farm for the next few weeks. Then they would go home.

10 . 阅读下面短文,根据内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。

Bees are very strange creatures. They have their own way of telling each other that they have found a new flower. They bring some of its nectar (花蜜) back home and then do a little dance that shows where the flower is and how far away it is.

In autumn the worker bees go out and collect as much nectar and pollen (花粉) as they can carry. Then they return to make honey and store it for the long cold winter.

Bees build their own houses but they do not always have round tops like people draw them in storybooks. They are usually five storeys high. The queen bee always has the bottom storey. In between the bottom storey and all the rest there are bars only just wide enough for the workers to pass through. The queen bee can never go up to the other floors because she is bigger than all the other bees. The storeys the queen can’t enter are where the store rooms are. There are rooms for pollen, nectar and royal jellies (蜂王浆). If there is a fire the workers have to cover the walls and entrance of the rooms. They have to move the honey and the nectar and pollen away from the hot walls of the room.

The queen is the only that can lay eggs. She mates with a male bee called a drone. Once the queen has laid the eggs she throws the drone out because a drone just sits around eating honey and nectar. He cannot go out and collect pollen because drones do not have pollen-carrying things on their legs like the workers have.

Young bees are called nurses because they have to nurse the newborn bees whether they like it or not. What a bee ends up being when it grows up depends on what it eats. If it is to be a queen it must feed on royal jellies and it must never, ever set eyes on another queen. If it does they must fight till only one of them is still alive.
