Chinese writing uses symbols called characters.     1    (like) an alphabet, in which each letter usually presents a sound, characters are a     2    (combine) of pictures and sounds. Some characters, like ma, “horse,” look a little like     3     they represent.

Most characters combine meaning symbols and sound symbols. For example, the character for “lamp,” (灯),    4    (consist) of two parts. The part on the left comes from the character for “fire.” The part on the right gives a clue to how the character is supposed     5    (be) pronounced.

In the 1950s and 1960s, scholars in China wanted to make Chinese characters     6    (simple) by using fewer strokes. Today, 6000 of these characters are     7    (regular) used in China today.

Chinese characters are the oldest form of writing     8     use. They first appeared on Oracle Bones over 3000 years ago,     9     ancient kings used to predict the future.     10     wrote a question on a bone and then broke it. The way it cracked gave the answer.

Over time, people in Vietnam, Korea, and Japan learned to write Chinese. They incorporated the characters into their own language. In this way, Chinese characters become one of the many ways China has changed the world.

4 . The way people work has changed. The increasing use of technology presents new and continual challenges to small and large businesses, employees and managers, teachers and students.     1     University professors, for example, must learn to adapt their teaching skills in order to lead distance learning courses.

In today’s world, training and learning do not stop when we finish school.     2     For many managers and professionals the biggest challenge, as well as change, in the workplace, was the increased use of computers and computerized equipment. Between 1998 and 2000, the need for experienced employees who could use this kind of equipment rose dramatically. Many of those in the workplace at this time experienced changes in job requirements and had to attend job-related training or re-training courses.

3     In Finland, with the increased use of technology and the growth of distance learning, the teacher has become more of a tutor who guides a student, rather than lectures. In turn, the student has to take more responsibility for his or her learning in the absence of direct teacher contact. This requires that students should learn computer skills in order to cope with the demand of the future workplace.     4    It is also suggested that the salaries and job descriptions of teachers be reviewed because of future demands expected in their jobs. Previously, the professors may have held lectures between weekday hours in large halls. Now they may spend part of their day lecturing large groups of students in campus, and then conduct afternoon or evening classes online, with students in five different countries.

As technologies grow and develop, ongoing training will continue to be necessary.     5     Lifelong learning will become a way of life.

A.They are especially significant in the workplace.
B.They must now continue throughout our working lives.
C.It seems that everyone is being affected by the technological revolution.
D.Besides, this also highlights the need for teacher training, and re-training.
E.Moreover, what the professors need to do is to continue lecturing online.
F.The changing work environment is also affecting education and how we learn.
G.To be successful in the workplace, people will not stop learning when they leave school.

5 . Minimalism (极简主义) is hot culturally and for years, science has shown that it was also the path to maximal happiness. The point is that people who want the most happiness for their dollar should buy experiences, not things. According to the theory, the joy of an experience begins before it even starts, and continues when you look back on the fancy dinner, vacation or afternoon.

But a recent study complicates that picture, suggesting that new sweaters and smart phone purchase might make you as happy, in a way, as cruises and concerts do. There is a third type of happiness - momentary happiness - and it tends to last longer with material goods because people use them for more time than a typical experience.

Researchers from University of British Columbia (UBC) gave 67 participants $20 to spend on either an experiential or material purchase of their choice. Then they quizzed them about their happiness level through text messages and questionnaires.

They found that the study subjects gained more frequent momentary happiness from material goods, but deeper momentary happiness from the experiences. In other words, they enjoyed their material goods on a greater number of occasions, even though the happiness felt from the experiences was slightly deeper. Material purchases have an advantage, in that they provide frequent momentary happiness in the weeks after they are acquired.

This study somewhat echoes earlier research by Dunn and others, finding that lots of small purchases make people happier than a big one. Because we psychologically adapt to the things we have, new things provide a positive shake. Five trips a month to a cheap chain store may sound boring, but actually can help you forget about your daily tiring work.

As someone who had a flip phone (翻盖手机) till it became far out-fashioned, I can only add that my feelings toward my smart phone every day for the first year I owned it were just like the praise-hand emoji (表情符号).

1. Why does the minimalism theory advise people to buy experience?
A.Happiness lasts longer through the experience.
B.It's the scientific way to ensure happiness in life.
C.Money can never buy happiness with material goods.
D.Happiness from experience may get deeper over time.
2. How was the findings of UBC research different from the minimalism theory?
A.It's based on text messages and public survey.
B.It denies that happiness can come from experience.
C.It shows people can feel happy more often with material goods.
D.It shows material goods can bring more happiness than experience.
3. What is paragraph 5 mainly about?
A.Research result.B.Differences between two research.
C.Research method.D.relative finding of another research.
4. What is the author’s attitude towards using material purchases for happiness?
A.supportive.B.opposed.C.optimisticD.doubtful

文章大意:本文是说明文。主要介绍了超越世界和地球的渴望创造了对太空旅行的需求,导致了太空旅游的兴起。

6 . Travel enthusiasts fifty years ago talked about travelling to fascinating places around the world. Today the talk is about going beyond the world and the Earth. The thirst is creating a demand for space travel, giving rise to space tourism.

The space fights are not cheap - each flight into outer space costs about U.S. $20 million. Up till now, it has solely been enjoyed by a few adventurous super-ich men. To reduce the high cost of space travel for the mass market, space travel agencies now have a creative plan to offer suborbital flights, which cost much less. These joyrides will enable the tourists to reach the edge of space, which is more than 62 miles above the Earth, and allow them the experience of a few minutes of weighlessness as they gaze at the Earth below, before they return down to Earth again.

Space tourism is, however, not an environmentally friendly adventure. The black carbon emitted by the spacecraft could either raise temperatures at the poles, causing a melting of the ice or lead to rising temperatures, contributing to global warming. The emission of black carbon also causes the ozone molecules to break apart, contributing to several kilotons of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere.

Looking beyond Earth, an increase in space travel would mean that Man would not only leave his footprint in space but also his waste—space tourism can contribute to pollution of the environment of the outer space. With no current plans for waste disposal, one can only imagine clumps of litter floating around the planets.

Without doubt, space tourism opens up new exciting possibilities. With time, the price of the flights to space would become more reasonable. Increasing commercialization of space travel would also mean that a structure would be put in place for the disposal of space waste. However, with no immediate solution to counter the possible impact on climate changes and the thinning of the ozone layer, space tourism would probably prove to be yet another controversial (有争议的) venture of mankind.

1. What push space tourism to develop?
A.Investment from millionaires.B.Talks between travel enthusiasts.
C.People’s ambition to travel.D.Human’s travel habits and customs.
2. How do travel agencies reduce the high cost of space travel?
A.By reaching the orbit of the spaceship.
B.By cutting the distance of space travelling.
C.By allowing the people to travel alone in space.
D.By guiding travelers to gaze at the earth when landing.
3. According to the passage, what will eventually make space travel controversial?
A.The high cost of space fight.B.Causing global warming.
C.The lack of waste disposal project.D.Further Ozone layer build-up.
4. Which of the following can be the best title of the passage?
A.The Next Tourist Attraction: Space
B.Pros and Cons: Space Science Is on the Way
C.A Milestone in Technology: Manned Spaceship
D.A Controversial Program: Travel for the Ozone Layer.

8 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I started my dormitory life this year and met my roommate Kate. In the process of getting along, we found that we both enjoy reading and watching science fictions. With similar hobbies, our relationship immediately became closer. We went to class and canteen together every day in pairs.

Although we considered each other as the best friend, there were frictions in our life style. I was never very neat, while Kate was extremely organized. Each of her objects had its place, but mine always hid somewhere. She even labeled everything. I always looked for everything.

Over time, Kate got neater and I got messier. She would push my dirty clothing over, and I would lay my books on her tidy desk. We both got tired of each other and never stopped trying to change the other person’s life style. Our friendship went ups and downs like a boat on the sea. Dissatisfaction with the other was accumulating.

War broke out one evening. Kate came into the room. Soon, I heard her screaming, “Take your shoes away! Why under my bed!” Deafened, I saw my shoes flying at me. I was rather irritated (激怒). How could she act like that? I could not control my temper either. I jumped to my feet and started yelling. She yelled back louder. Neither of us was willing to calm down to be a good listener.

The room was filled with anger. We could not have stayed together for a single minute but for a phone call. Kate answered it. From her end of the conversation, I could tell right away her dear grandma was seriously ill. When she hung up, she quickly crawled under her covers, burying her face. From where I stood, I saw her back slightly up and down. Obviously, she was sobbing. That was something she should not go through alone. All of a sudden, a warm feeling of sympathy rose up in my heart.

Slowly I began to move.
