2 . The Pharos, the great lighthouse of Alexandria, was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. It stood on the island of Pharos, in the harbor (港口) of the city of Alexandria. In 280 B.C., Ptolemy Ⅰ Soter, the ruler of Egypt, ordered the building of the lighthouse. Twenty years later, it was finished—the first lighthouse in the world and the tallest building on Earth, besides the Great Pyramid of Egypt.
The Pharos was designed by Sostrates, a Greek architect. Sostrates wanted to leave his name on the base of the lighthouse. But Ptolemy refused, ordering that only his own name appeared on the building. But Sostrates found a way to do that. At the base of the Pharos, Sostrates left a message containing his own name. Then he covered it with plaster (建筑石膏) and left Ptolemy’s name over it. After many years, the plaster disappeared and people knew the true architect of the lighthouse.
In 1302 and 1323, two strong earthquakes hit Alexandria, damaging the lighthouse. In 1326, it finally fell into the sea. Much of what we know about the lighthouse comes from the writings of Arabs who once visited the Pharos.
The Pharos was about 384 feet tall, the same height as a modern 40-story building. At the top of the lighthouse stood a large statue of Poseidon, the Greek god of the sea. Under it was a beacon, the source of light for the lighthouse. The Pharos used two kinds of beacons. At night, a large fire created the light. During the day, a huge mirror made use of the sunlight to create the light.
It was said that the mirror was also used to set enemy ships on fire as they entered the harbor by directing the sun’s rays (光线) at them. While the idea is interesting, it is also clearly impossible.

3 . People are always afraid of making mistakes. But sometimes it’s not bad to make mistakes, and here is why.
At first, mistakes are a clear sign that you are trying new things. It’s always good to try new things, because when you are trying new things you are growing. If you never try new things, how can you improve? How can you create? The simple answer is, “You can’t.” Look around you, everything you see is the result of someone trying new things.
Another good thing about mistakes is this: when you are making mistakes, you are learning. Consider this: Edison failed 10,000 times before he invented the light bulb. When he was asked how he felt to fail that many times, he said that he hadn’t failed 10,000 times, but rather had learned 10,000 things that didn’t work.
Finally, when you make a mistake, you are that much closer to success. Why? Because you have said what you should say, and you have done what you should do. Every time you make a mistake, you are closer to success. But it doesn’t mean that you can make mistakes without thinking. Instead, when you try new things you have to think them over, so that you can keep away from some unnecessary mistakes.
We shouldn’t spend all our time and money on the only one way, but use them correctly. Because our time and money are limited (有限的).
There is an old saying, “If you are not making mistakes, you are not trying hard enough.” So go bravely and make mistakes. And learn. And grow. And succeed.

7 . Roller coasters are fast and exciting. But passing a painful kidney (肾) stone is not. The process is painful and can take a long time. But American researchers have found that a roller coaster ride just might help those suffering from a kidney stone. They say such rides help patients pass the stones with a 70 percent success rate.
David Wartinger led the study. He found that where the person sits on the roller coaster can make a big difference. He said, “In the pilot study, sitting in the last car of the roller coaster showed about a 64 percent success rate, while sitting in the first few cars only had a 16 percent success rate.”
When it comes to passing kidney stones, not all roller coasters are equal. The researchers used 174 kidney stones of different shapes, sizes and weights to see if each model worked on the same ride and on two other roller coasters. They found that Big Thunder Mountain was the only one that worked. The other two roller coasters both failed the test. Wartinger said the other rides were too fast and too violent. The movement forced the stones against the side of the kidney. He said that the ideal roller coaster is rough and quick with some twists and turns.
It also mattered where the stones were located in the kidney. The researchers found that stones located in the upper part of the kidney model were passed 100 percent.
Wartinger thinks roller coaster rides could really be used as an effective measure. He said that a yearly ride on a roller coaster could even prevent stones from developing. “You need to pay attention to the warnings before going on a roller coaster,” he said, “If you have a kidney stone, but are otherwise healthy and meet the requirements of the ride, you can absolutely try it.”
He adds that it’s definitely a lower cost alternative to other treatments. And riding a roller coaster is definitely more interesting!

8 . The war epic The Battle at Lake Changjin, one of the most expensive films ever made in China, shot to the top of the weeklong National Day holiday box office, promoting the domestic film market to rebound (反弹) after being inactive for more than two months.
With three outstanding directors — Chen Kaige, Hark Tsui and Dante Lam — the 176-minute-long film follows Chinese People’s Volunteers (CPV) who joined the battle, which turned the tide of the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea (1950-1953).
With the number of cast and crew reaching an unprecedented scale of more than 12,000, the movie recreates the cruel conflict on the Korean Peninsula (朝鲜半岛) amid the extremely cold winter of 1950, when temperatures lowered to the level in 50 years. The movie’s production involved more than 80 visual-effects companies domestically and abroad, with the script being revised 37 times. Breaking over 10 records, the movie has raked in around 2 billion yuan ($310 million) since its opening on Sept 30. It accounted for around 75 percent of total holiday income, which had reached 2.67 billion yuan as of Monday, according to the movie information tracker Beacon. The film has also collected millions of reviews and clicks on several of the country’s most popular social media platforms, including Weibo and Douyin, with most commenters praising the moving tale and saying it stimulates their national pride, making them want to show their respect for the CPV heroes who sacrificed their lives. Some netizens said the film reminds them, amid the current China-US tension, to cherish today’s peaceful life.
Most analysts said the movies’ commercial success has lived up to the industry’s estimation, giving cinema operators a sign of revival. “With a lot of details to recreate historical reality, The Battle at Lake Changjin has raised the bar for Chinese war films to a new high level, signaling the progress that the domestic industry has achieved,” said Rao Shuguang, president of the China Film Critics Association.
But compared with the same period in previous years, the shortage of appealing, medium-budget films has reduced the variety of genres (体裁), which will not be good for the long-term development of the Chinese film industry, Rao added.
