Around twenty years ago, I was going through hard times. I couldn’t find a     1     (satisfy) job. To my shame, I had to drive a school bus    2     (make) ends meet. One afternoon, while    3     (drive) through a suburban neighborhood, I was so sad that I kept asking    4     (I), “Why has my life become so hard? What’s wrong with the world?” Then I pulled over the bus to drop off a little girl. In the evening, the owner did come to look for her earring. 4 . My brother and I are exactly one year apart. We look like twins, but we are completely _________. I took his relative silence to be offensive. We simply didn’t _________.

I didn’t mind having a tense relationship with my brother because I was involved at school. _________, I threw myself into the world of musicals. I practised singing in the bedroom every day to remain at my best and be competitive for roles; my brother would meditate on a window seat. He might feel high school was already hard enough _________ my noisy singing. So space to practise became a(n) _________ between us because we shared a room.

At the start of the semester, I practised “Circle of Life” for a musical. This was the first time I _________ to learn a song, because my voice cracked (破音) as I switched to a head voice. After two days of this, my brother asked me to join him in meditation. Feeling my anger at my inability to manage this song __________, I accepted. My brother said, “When your mind floats away, you simply come back. Don’t blame yourself.” I got the message, and it soon became my new __________. I kept trying at the song, no longer getting __________ at myself. And just in time for the trial performance, I was able to __________ power in my singing despite the switch to a head voice. It was important for me to learn that you don’t have to always get everything right the first time and that good things come with continual __________. I now understand why my brother favours the __________.

5 . When I became a junior, I decided to take Latin (拉丁语) at school. I felt much ____ about taking that class, and I was fully expecting to be able to understand every word I’d ever ______once I learned Latin.

But Latin classes were so ____. Each day, the teacher Mr. Keady would ask us to open our books and recite aloud the various Latin forms of words. Thus it became the daily ____. That went on until I ____ my hand one afternoon when we were asked yet again to open our books.

When Mr. Keady asked what was wrong, I ____ why I thought that his class was boring how I had expected more, and that his method of teaching was out of date. When I finished speaking, I ____ Mr. Keady would angrily send me to the head teacher.

Instead, he sat at his desk ____, looking beaten and tired. After several moments of ______Mr. Keady spoke. He quietly and strongly said that he would think carefully about what I’d said. And that was it.

In the following weeks, Latin class didn’t become the exciting leaning environment I hoped it would, but Mr. Keady did try harder. He brought in some new worksheets and ____ to make us students take part more in his classes.

Maybe some people would ____ what I did but even so many years later, I feel bad about it. If I saw him now, I’d tell him how I ____ what I’d done that day in class, and that I was disrespectful. 6 . Every Sunday morning I take a walk around a park near my home. There’s a lake in one corner of the park. Each time I walk by this lake, I see the same old woman sitting at the water’s edge with a small metal cage beside her.

This Sunday, I stopped walking and went over to her. As I got closer, I realized that there were three turtles(乌龟)，unhurt, slowly walking around the base of the metal cage. She had a fourth turtle on her knee that she was carefully cleaning it with a brush, which made me feel surprised.

“Hello,” I said. “If you don’t mind, I’d love to know what you’re doing with these turtles.”

“I’m cleaning off their shells,” she replied.

“Anything on a turtle’s shell weakens the turtle’s ability to take in heat and blocks its ability to swim. It can also impair and weaken the shell over time.”

She went on, “I spend a couple of hours each Sunday morning, relaxing by this lake and helping these little guys out. It’s my own strange way of making a difference. ”

“Well then, don’t you think your time could be better spent? It’s a waste of time. And 99% of these turtles don’t have kind people like you to help them clean off their shells. So, how exactly are your efforts here truly making a difference?”

The woman smiled, then looked down at the turtle on her knee, wiped off the last piece of algae(海藻) from its shell, and said, “Sweetie, if this little guy could talk, he’d tell you I just made all the difference in the world. ”

8 . It was two days before we would leave our house. I thought back to the old days in the house. However, we were saying _________.

My husband said some things like the rocking chair and the kitchen table wouldn’t _________ in the truck. I said, “But we have to take them!”

“But there is not enough room,” he said.

We lived on the east side of Mississippi and our parents were in the west, so we always _________ to move out there to be with the people we missed. When a chance came for my husband to work in the west, we decided to _________.

“Could we get a bigger truck?” I asked, still trying to bring everything along with us.

9 . When I was a boy there were no smart phones, and our television only got one channel clearly. Still, I was never bored. The fields, hills, and woodlands around my home were the perfect playground. I can remember once hiking to a nearby lake. At the backside of it I was amazed to find an old dirt road that I had never seen before. It was full of muddy tracks and deep woods bordered it on both sides, but exploring it still seemed like a fine adventure.

I walked on and on for hours. I was sure my guardian angel was whispering in my ear “Turn around and head back home”, but I was stubborn, so I walked on. There was still neither a car nor a house in sight. I noticed that the sun was starting to go down and I grew scared. I didn’t want to end up trapped on this road,   and I was worried that it would be dark before I could make my way back to the lake again.

I continued to walk on with something growing inside of me. My heart was pounding and my legs were aching. I was almost in tears when I turned one last curve and saw something in the distance.   It was a house that I recognized. I jumped up and down and laughed out loud.   It was still over a mile away,   but my legs felt like feathers and I hurried back to my house in no time. I walked in with a big smile on my face just in time for dinner.

I remembered this recently when I saw a sign that said “All roads lead home”. It is true. In life,   all roads,   no matter how they twist and turn,   can lead us home again. What is important,   though,   is how we travel them.   Are we going to go forth in fear or are we going to go forth in faith? Are we going to make this life a terrible trip or are we going to make this life a joyful journey? The choice is ours.

What is happiness? When     1     (ask) about happiness, we usually think of something extraordinary, an absolute delight, which seems to get less as we get     2    (old).

For kids, happiness has a magical quality. Winning a race or getting a new bike is     3    (absolute) pleasant.

In the teenage years,     4     concept of happiness changes. Their happiness     5     (lie) in such things as excitement, love and popularity,     6         leave a good impression on them during their youth. I can still recall the excitement when I     7     (invite) to dance with the most attractive boy at the school party.
