2 . Many people believe it is crucial to have gender equality in the workplace. But achieving equality means overturning centuries of social norms. Recent research by Oxford University suggests that sometimes it is women themselves who are limiting their career opportunities.
The study surveyed 3,698 students from 63 schools and colleges across the UK . It found out that female students tend to choose “worthwhile” jobs, while male students often go after jobs that offer big salaries. Researchers noticed that secondary school girls said they were more willing to accept low-income jobs like charity work or museum positions, while boys focused more on getting high-prestige careers, reported The Guardian.
“Compared with boys, girls are more concerned about each aspect of job application. They are more interested in careers that offer job security, in a cause they ‘feel good about’,” Jonathan Black, director of the Oxford University Careers Service, told The Telegraph.
China faces a similar gender gap. This month, a poll by Chongqing Morning Post indicates that female college graduates care more about their working environment. As for male graduates, career prospects are more important. “This has the knock-on effect that girls may be self-limiting their choice of careers, especially because the types of jobs they seek often have informal entry processes, like getting an internship or doing unpaid work,” Black said.

3 . Real policemen hardly recognize any resemblance between their lives and what they see on TV.
Most television crime drama is about finding the criminal: as soon as he’s arrested, the story is over.
A third big difference between the drama detective and the real one is the unpleasant pressures: First, as members of a police force, they always have to behave absolutely in accordance with the law.
If the detective has to deceive (欺骗)the world, the world often deceives him.
A.He can't get any evidence from the witnesses. |
B.In real life, finding criminals is seldom much of a problem. |
C.Little of his time is spent in chatting. |
D.Sometimes he can chat with others to relax himself. |

4 . Recently, I had lunch with a young Chinese student who studies at a college in New York. He is very bright and ambitious and I enjoyed our conversation. Still, I felt upset and useless afterwards because I was not able to provide him with any good news. Graduating at the end of this year, he asked me how he could find a job in this country and fulfill his career dreams.
In recent years, students who found a job here after graduation have had to go through a cruel lottery system to obtain their H-1B working visa. And the success rates have been declining year after year because of the ever growing number of applicants. Last year, there were 233,000 applicants and only 30 percent of them were lucky, about half of the rate in 2013.
And it can only become worse. US former President Donald Trump’s immigration policies in this country have been tightening up and this trend will continue for at least the next few years. In this case, foreign students studying social sciences, a field in which starting salaries are rarely above the required amount, can kiss their visa hopes goodbye.
Compared to the older generation of Chinese students, today’s young people no longer consider the US as the only option. Many start to think China offers better opportunities in the longer term.
This is not to say that Chinese students in the US are not interested in job opportunities here any more. A few years of work experience in the US can give them advantages when they finally land back in their home country. But if the job opportunities are largely reduced by the tightening of immigration policy, I expect there will be a decline. And if that happens, it is the American economy that will suffer from the loss of those educated, hard-working and talented immigrants.

A.It is increasingly hard for them to get their H-1B working visa. |
B.The number of applicants in the job market is ever growing. |
C.Donald Trump’s immigration policies have been tightening up. |
D.The starting salaries they require are higher than expected. |

What you need is to be willing to pose (摆姿势) in front of others for up to 30 minutes. Is it easy enough to make money? All shapes and ages are OK, but only females! |
Babysit if you’re good with children Talk to people you know to see if they may be in need of a babysitter, and post about your availability as a babysitter on social media. 8 . According to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, China’s digital economy has increased by 15.9 percent annually since 2012, reaching 45.5 trillion yuan ($6.32 trillion) last year. Facing the growing digital economy and new vacancies developed in the sector such as deliverymen and livestreaming anchors(主播), young people, especially those born after 2000, are expressing a stronger willingness for flexible work relations with companies, and also wish to become “digital workers” with flexible work locations and schedules.
“The Internet helps me a lot. I check emails from my clients and submit my proposals through WeChat, and then we discuss plans via teleconference. I love working from home actually,” said Mi Lu, a 28-year-old new media operator in Beijing. “We work everywhere, perhaps in a cafe, or on a bullet train or even on the table of a restaurant.”
To cater to young people’s work preferences, more companies have begun to include “flexible working mode” in their recruitment advertisements. Zhaopin, a website, said vacancies with flexible work available make up 15 to 20 percent of total vacancies on its platform, especially for industries in the growing gig economy such as transportation and logistics(物流). According to Zhaopin, the proportion of flexible vacancies in these industries has increased to 25 percent this year, up from 10 percent in 2018.
However, the flexibility may bring risks to workers’ rights protection, according to Zhaopin. It said that though roughly 60 percent of companies posting vacancies on its platform offer insurance, the proportion is decreasing.
Li Qiang, vice-president of Zhaopin, said that the greatest risk to those seeking flexible work is whether the company pays the salary fully and on time. “It’s necessary for job seekers to set up a long-term development plan, rather than be shortsighted.” He added that companies may bear risks that flexible employees can’t deliver high-quality work in a limited time period, which requires the companies to establish a sound work delivery standard to help evaluate employee performance.
1. What factor contributes to flexible work?A.The booming digital economy. | B.The desire for more free time. |
C.The disappearance of some positions. | D.The improvement of working conditions. |
A.They ignore the youth’s requests. | B.They follow the old working mode. |
C.They provide positions accordingly. | D.They reduce working opportunities. |
A.The companies pay higher salary. | B.The job seekers make a detailed plan. |
C.The companies make reasonable rules. | D.The job seekers apply for positions on time. |
A.A new internet-related working model | B.Job seekers more keen on flexible work |
C.The rapidly developing digital economy | D.Companies well prepared for new risks |
9 . Elements To Impress Your Boss and Advance Your Career
What do leaders look at to judge employees(员工) outside of the work product?
I developed this series because I often get questioned on how to create and have a successful career. There are little things that many people don’t think about.
●What time you get to work
This is for those who have to physically go into an office. If you are up out of your seat and hit the elevator at or before the end of your workday, then we have a problem. Part of success means putting in a full day and sometimes a little extra time when needed.
●What you say and how you say it
Ever heard of putting your foot in your mouth? A time or two may be forgivable.
●How and if you take part in meetings
●How you dress
I know — we are in a world of business casual. But, if you want to be recognized as a professional, I suggest supporting more on the side of business than casual.
A.What time you leave work |
B.Whatever you say is also very important |
C.But if this happens all the time or very often |
D.If you are only ever the receiver of information |
E.How long you should stay away from your seat |
F.Being timely can raise your professional position in a way |
G.And a lot of times these little things can contribute to your advance |
10 . Born in New York in 1918, scientist Gertrude B. Elion had an impressive career, during which she developed medicines to cure many major diseases. Elion spent her early youth in Manhattan. She attended senior high school and had, in her words, an unbelievable thirst for knowledge.
Influenced by the death of her grandfather, who died of cancer, Elion entered Hunter College at the age of 15 and graduated in chemistry at the age of 19. She had difficulty finding employment after graduation because many laboratories refused to hire women chemists. She found a part-time job as a lab assistant and went back to school at New York University. Elion worked as a high school teacher for a few years after finishing work on her master’s degree.
The start of World War II created more opportunities for women. At the age of 26, Elion was able to get a job at Burroughs Welcome, where she began a 40-year partnership with Dr. George H. Hitchings. Her thirst for knowledge impressed Dr. Hitchings, and he permitted her to take on more responsibility.
Elion and Hitchings set out on a course of creating medicines by studying the chemical composition of diseased cells. Rather than relying on old trial-and-error methods, they used the differences in biochemistry between normal human cells and pathogens(病原体)to design medicines. In all, Elion obtained 45 patents on medicine and was awarded 23 honorary degrees.
In 1988, Elion received the Nobel Prize for Medicine, together with George H. Hlitchings and Sir James Black. She received other awards for her work, including the National Medal of Science in 1991, and that same year, she became the first woman to be absorbed into the National Inventors Hall of Fame. In 1997, she was awarded the Lemelson-MIT Lifetime Achievement Award.
