A ten-year-old girl saved about one hundred other tourists in 2004 by warning them that a tsunami (海啸), a huge ocean wave, was on its way across the sea. She knew what was happening because she learnt about underwater earthquakes at school only a few weeks earlier, a newspaper reported.
“I was on the beach and the water started to go funny,” Tilly Smith told the reporter from the newspaper. “There were bubbles (气泡) and the water went back suddenly. I knew there was going to be a tsunami. I told my Mum,” she said.
Tilly’s mother and the hotel workers acted quickly. They cleared people from the beach just minutes before a huge wave reached the land. Luckily, no one died.
Tilly’s teacher was very proud of her. “She’s a very clever girl…It is lucky that our class were learning about this kind of tsunami just two weeks before Christmas,” he told the newspaper.

9 . Qi Haoran, a Junior 1 student at High School Attached to Harbin Institute of Technology, was quite busy over the past winter vacation—and not just with homework. Qi, together with 10 other classmate s made a volunteer group to call on people to join the Clean Your Plate Campaign(光盘行动).
The 11 students went to many restaurants and told people the importance of saving food. “Excuse me, do you know that 950 million people around the world still haven’t got enough to eat? Please don’t waste food.” They would say this kind of thing hundreds of times every day.
The Clean Your Plate Campaign began on the Internet in January. It calls on people to reduce food waste.
China in recent years has experienced serious problems with wasted food. CCTV reported in January that the food Chinese people waste every year is enough to feed 200 million people for a year. Chinese people are well known for being hospitable(好客的) and generous. Many even feel that they lose face if their guests have eaten all the food.
Luckily, the campaign has got the support(支持)of many. In a restaurant in Xinjiang, the owner gives the guests who have eaten all that they ordered a sticker. People can enjoy a free meal when they have 10 stickers. More than 750 restaurants in Beijing have begun to offer smaller dishes and encourage their guests to take leftovers home.
To reduce food waste is a big task, and it needs time. It’s important that everyone does their bit, just like Qi. Did you finish your meals today?

10 . My father is a truck driver, and he has been for over 30 years. He works more than 12 hours every day, and weekends.
One evening my father brought my brother and me to pick up our mother. We arrived at the Eagles Hall and were waiting in the truck when my father smelled something. He looked behind our truck and could see smoke coming from a house, a block behind us. He drove quickly to the house. The smoke was thick, and we saw fire when he opened the door and went inside. He came out with a woman and rushed back in for her children. He didn’t stop until all the children were out. When the firemen arrived, we went back to get my mother.
My father didn’t even mention it to Mom. We had to tell her what we had seen. My father said that nothing much happened and not to worry. The next day, it was reported in the newspaper that the people in the house were trying to find my father to thank him. My father just said they had more important things to care about.
My father has a metal detector. He used it all over the town, in fields, bus stations, parks — almost everywhere. He found countless amounts of change, jewelry, and junk. The most valuable thing he found was a pure gold nursing pin, a badge (徽章) given to nurses when they graduated. There was a name on it, and a date in the early 1920s. Dad did some research and learned that the owner was now in a nursing home several hundred miles away.
The next Sunday he drove to see her. She was overjoyed. The pin had been lost for over 50 years. The woman asked my father how much he wanted for the pin and he refused any reward. But the woman became upset that he would accept nothing, so he compromised by accepting gas money for the trip — though I am sure that he didn’t tell her how much the drive really cost.
Any one of these events makes my dad a hero, but he never stops. I’ve learned from him that being a hero means doing whatever you can whenever you can.
